Why Prince Harry could ‘lose title’ soon as law change is proposed

Prince Harry may soon face the risk of losing his royal title if a newly proposed law moves forward. The legislation comes in the wake of the ongoing controversy surrounding Andrew Mountbatten Windsor and his connection to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Just last week, King Charles III formally stripped his brother—formerly the Duke of York—of all royal titles and honors, with Buckingham Palace releasing a direct and uncompromising statement confirming the decision.

A New Bill to Allow Title Removal

Before this latest move, Andrew had announced he would voluntarily stop using his Duke of York title to avoid drawing attention away from the Royal Family’s official duties. However, the title itself can only be legally removed through an Act of Parliament—and that is exactly what one Member of Parliament is now proposing.

York Central MP Rachael Maskell has introduced new legislation that would grant the monarch authority to strip individuals of their royal titles.

According to The Independent, if enacted, the bill would allow the reigning sovereign to remove titles either on their own initiative, following recommendations from a joint parliamentary committee, or upon request from the titleholder.

Speaking about the proposal, Maskell said:

“It is time for Parliament to act so that it can, or the monarch can, remove titles. The Duke of York title may no longer be being used by its holder, but it has not been removed. My short Bill, The Removal of Titles Bill, will fix this; I hope it can now be supported by Parliament.”

Could Prince Harry Be Next?

Following these developments, royal insiders told Page Six that Prince Harry could also face title removal if the bill passes.

A source reportedly said:

“If they pass these bills, I would not be surprised if Harry is the next one to go. I would not be surprised if William does that … he’s not a vindictive person, but he feels very let down and it’s always much more difficult when you are let down by somebody close to you.”

The comment reflects the long-standing strain between Harry and the rest of the royal family—particularly with his brother, Prince William.

Harry’s Strained Ties with the Royal Family

Since stepping back from royal duties in 2020, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle have built a life in the United States, where they are raising their two children, Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four.

In his memoir Spare, Harry referred to William as his “beloved brother and arch-nemesis,” highlighting the deep rift that has persisted for years. Reportedly, the two have not spoken since Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in September 2022.

A Tentative Reconnection with King Charles

However, signs of reconciliation may be emerging. In September, Harry reunited with his father for the first time in 19 months, sharing afternoon tea at Clarence House.

The meeting lasted 54 minutes—Harry arrived at 5:20 p.m. in a black Range Rover and departed at 6:14 p.m. It marked their first in-person meeting since February 2024, when Harry visited the King following his cancer diagnosis.

The encounter seemed positive, as Harry appeared in good spirits afterward. When asked by a reporter how his father was doing, he smiled and replied,

“Yes, he’s great, thank you.”

While tensions remain, the proposed law adds another layer of uncertainty to the already complex relationship between Prince Harry and the royal establishment.
