What is this dark spot visible on Pope Francis’s face: experts’ hypotheses

Part 1 of 2

As thousands of people gathered at St. Peter’s Basilica to pay their final respects to Pope Francis, one particular detail drew widespread attention. A dark mark was clearly visible on the left side of his face. Images of his body on display spread quickly through the media, sparking a wave of speculation. People began asking: “Was it an injury? A mysterious sign? Or simply a natural phenomenon linked to death?”

A powerful image, though not uncommon

While the mark may have appeared unsettling at first, forensic experts say such changes are not unusual. In Italy, where the story received significant coverage, several specialists offered possible medical explanations for the mark.

Despite the speculation, the actual cause is considered quite ordinary from a medical standpoint. According to professionals, the mark is neither a strange injury nor anything supernatural. It is a common post-mortem occurrence, particularly in older individuals or those who had been seriously ill before passing.

The Most Likely Medical Explanation

Blood settling after death
After someone dies, their heart stops pumping and blood no longer moves through the body. Because of gravity, the blood starts to collect in the lower parts of the body. This is called cadaveric hypostasis, and it can cause dark spots to appear under the skin.

If Pope Francis’s head had been tilted to one side for a while, the blood might have gathered there, making the dark mark people noticed. It’s kind of like water in a bowl that gathers in the lowest corner.
