Happy Soul Moral Stories

I Came Home Early From a Canceled Trucking Route and Found My Sixteen-Year-Old Son Washing His Clothes by Hand in Freezing Water While My Wife Vacationed in Miami—When I Rolled Up His Sleeves, I Discovered I Had Been Living With a Stranger and A Scheme All Along

Part 1 of 3

The first thing I noticed wasn’t the bucket.

It was my son’s hands.

They were bright red from cold water, moving slowly through a pile of jeans in the laundry sink.

“Dad?” Lucas looked up so fast that soapy water splashed onto the floor. “What are you doing home?”

I should have been halfway to Indianapolis with a refrigerated trailer behind me.

Instead, a canceled shipment had sent me back to Columbus twelve hours early.

I set my duffel bag down without answering.

The washing machine sat three feet away.

Brand new.

The lid was closed.

“Why aren’t you using the washer?” I asked.

Lucas stared at the floor.

“Candice said I’m not allowed.”

For a second I thought I had misheard him.

“Not allowed?”

He nodded.

“She said I waste electricity.”

The words hung in the room.

Outside, my eighteen-wheeler was still idling in the driveway.

Inside, my sixteen-year-old son was washing clothes the way my grandfather had during camping trips.

With freezing water.

I walked over and touched the water.

It felt like melted ice.

“Where is everyone?”

“Miami.”

“Miami?”

“Candice… Wyatt… Grandma Evelyn… Aunt Valerie… all of them.”

He hesitated.

“They left three days ago.”

I looked around the house.

Suitcases were gone.

The refrigerator held almost nothing besides ketchup, half a gallon of milk, and old sandwich meat.

“They left you here alone?”

Lucas shrugged.

“I’m old enough.”

He said it like he had practiced saying it.

That bothered me even more.

Clara, my late wife, used to tell Lucas that nobody should ever have to practice sounding okay.

I hadn’t thought about that sentence in years.

Now it came back all at once.

I turned back toward him.

“Come here.”

He froze.

“Lucas.”

Slowly, he stepped closer.

His sweatshirt sleeves were pulled almost over his hands.

“Roll them up.”

His eyes widened.

“Dad…”

“Roll. Them. Up.”

He swallowed.

Then he pulled the fabric back.

I stopped breathing.

Dark bruises covered both forearms.

Some were yellow.

Some were purple.

One cut had barely healed.

Another looked only a day or two old.

There were finger-shaped marks near his wrist.

Not one bruise.

Not two.

Dozens.

I reached toward his arm.

He flinched before I even touched him.

That hurt more than anything I saw.

“Who did this?”

He shook his head.

“I fell.”

“Lucas.”

Silence.

Then tears rolled down his face before he even answered.

“Please don’t make me say it.”

My Son Finally Started Talking

I made grilled cheese sandwiches because they were the only thing I knew I couldn’t ruin.

Lucas ate three.

He never asked if he could.

He kept apologizing every time he reached for another piece.

“Sorry.”

“For what?”

“Eating too much.”

I set my sandwich down.

“Who told you that?”

He stared at the plate.

No answer.

After dinner he automatically carried both plates to the sink.

I stopped him.

“Leave them.”

He looked confused.

“Candice says dishes have to be washed immediately.”

“Candice isn’t here.”

He stood there for several seconds before finally walking away.

It struck me how every movement seemed to require permission.

Later that night I knocked on his bedroom door.

“Can I come in?”

He almost laughed.

“You don’t have to ask.”

“I know.”

I sat on the edge of his bed.

For a long time neither of us spoke.

Finally he whispered,

“Are you mad?”

“At who?”

“Me.”

I looked at him.

Really looked.

He seemed thinner than when I’d left for my last route.

His cheeks had sunk in.

His sweatshirt hung loose around his shoulders.

How had I missed that?

Because every time I came home, Candice had dinner ready.

Lucas always said he wasn’t hungry.

She always smiled and said,

“Teenagers live on junk food.”

I believed her.

I hated myself for believing her.

“Lucas.”

He looked up.

“Tell me everything.”

He took a shaky breath.

Then the words started coming.

Not dramatically.

Just quietly.

Like someone finally opening a door that had been stuck for months.

“She said I wasn’t allowed to use the washer because I didn’t earn it.”

“She made me clean the bathrooms before school.”

“If Wyatt made a mess, I had to clean it.”

“Sometimes she locked the pantry.”

I didn’t interrupt.

He kept talking.

“She took my phone.”

“She said friends were a distraction.”

Then he stopped.
