PART 1 — THE LETTER THAT BROUGHT MY PAST BACK TO LIFE

For nine years, I convinced myself that my marriage had ended because my former wife betrayed everything I had worked to build. Then an anonymous letter arrived at my Manhattan office, and within twenty-four hours, everything I believed about my life began collapsing.

My name is Nathaniel Prescott, and I was forty-four years old when that letter appeared on my desk. I controlled a real estate corporation worth hundreds of millions of dollars, occupied a two-story penthouse overlooking Central Park, and traveled between properties in vehicles that cost more than most families earned in several years.

None of those things mattered when I opened the envelope.

Inside was an address in a remote mountain town in Vermont and one handwritten sentence.

If you still remember Claire, go to this address alone.

Claire had once been my wife.

I met her when I was building my first construction company and she worked as a contract-review specialist for a nonprofit community development fund. She was intelligent, independent, and more interested in whether a building served its community than whether its owner appeared on a magazine cover.

Back then, I drove a battered pickup truck and calculated construction estimates on restaurant napkins. Claire loved that version of me, long before Prescott Development Group became a corporation with its name displayed above a Manhattan skyscraper.

Everything changed during the autumn of 2017.

A strategic partnership with a major construction company collapsed after eighteen million dollars disappeared from a project escrow account. Investors threatened litigation, and our longtime chief financial officer, Charles Aldridge, claimed that Claire had secretly shared confidential documents with competitors.

Charles had worked for my father before joining my leadership team. I trusted him more readily than I trusted the woman who had shared my struggles.

That was my first unforgivable mistake.

I drove to our estate in the Hamptons, where Claire was waiting with a yellow folder containing documents she desperately wanted me to examine.

“Nathaniel, these invoices don’t match any legitimate construction work, and somebody inside your company is hiding what happened to the money.”

I refused to listen.

“You’ve endangered everything I’ve built, Claire, and I won’t allow you to destroy this company while pretending you’re trying to protect me.”

She pleaded for an opportunity to explain, but anger had already replaced whatever judgment I possessed.

“Take your belongings and leave this house tonight, because I don’t want to see you here when I return.”

She departed during a heavy rainstorm carrying one suitcase.

I watched her disappear through the gates without following.

Our divorce was finalized months later. I changed my telephone number, replaced my personal email address, and directed my staff to prevent any further contact.

My mother, Margaret Prescott, congratulated me for protecting the family’s reputation.

Now, nine years later, an anonymous stranger had sent me toward the woman I’d spent nearly a decade pretending I no longer remembered.

I canceled my meetings, rented an ordinary SUV, and drove north through mountains covered in brilliant autumn leaves.

By evening, I reached a weathered cabin beside a narrow gravel road.

Two small pairs of children’s sneakers stood outside the front door.

I knocked.

And Claire opened it.

PART 2 — TWO CHILDREN WITH MY FACE

Claire looked older than I remembered, although the determination in her eyes hadn’t changed.

Her brown hair contained a few silver strands, and her hands showed the marks of someone who worked hard for a living.

She stared at me without smiling.

“Nathaniel, what are you doing here after all these years, and how did you even discover where I live?”

I showed her the letter.

Her expression changed immediately.

“I didn’t send this, and whoever wrote it knew where I was living without asking my permission.”

She reluctantly invited me inside, warning that her children were home and that I mustn’t upset them.

The cabin smelled of woodsmoke, coffee, and freshly washed clothing. Children’s drawings covered the refrigerator, while schoolbooks and colored pencils occupied an old wooden table.

I noticed a photograph showing Claire, another man, and two children.

For one humiliating moment, jealousy tightened my chest.

I had abandoned the right to question her happiness, yet I couldn’t stop wondering whether she’d married somebody else.

“That’s my brother, Andrew,” she explained when she noticed my expression. “He’s helped us ever since we moved here.”

I looked toward the children in the photograph.

“Their names are Samuel and Emma, and they recently turned eight,” she continued.

My breathing changed.

The numbers immediately pulled me toward a possibility I was almost afraid to consider.

Then footsteps sounded in the hallway.

A dark-haired boy appeared, followed by a girl holding the sleeve of his sweatshirt.

The boy studied me.

“Mom, why does that man look so much like me, especially around his eyes and forehead?”

Claire gently asked the children to return to their room.

Once we were alone, I struggled to form the question.

“Claire, please tell me whether those children are mine, because I can’t bear another moment wondering what you’ve been carrying alone.”

Her eyes filled.

“I was almost two months pregnant when you threw me out, Nathaniel, and Samuel and Emma are your biological children.”

I reached for the back of a chair to steady myself.

Two children.

Eight years of birthdays, Christmas mornings, first words, and school performances I’d never witnessed.

Claire walked toward a cabinet and returned carrying a yellowed delivery envelope.

Across its front was the receipt stamp from my company’s Manhattan headquarters.

The envelope was dated May 18, 2018, six days after the twins were born prematurely.

Beneath the address appeared a handwritten instruction I recognized immediately as my mother’s.

Matter handled. Do not inform Nathaniel.

Claire showed me the enclosed letter.

She had asked urgently for assistance because one baby required intensive neonatal care for serious breathing difficulties.

She’d also requested direct contact with me.

“I tried calling you repeatedly after discovering the pregnancy, but your number was disconnected, my emails were rejected, and your lawyers threatened me when I visited the office.”

She explained that a receptionist had preserved copies of the delivery records and later passed them to Andrew.

“Your family’s attorney warned that if I continued approaching you, they would use their resources to challenge my ability to raise the children.”

I felt physically sick.

“I never instructed anyone to threaten you or hide our children, although I understand why you have every reason to doubt me.”

Claire looked directly at me.

“You ordered me into the rain without listening to a single explanation, Nathaniel, so tell me why I should have trusted you to protect us afterward.”

I couldn’t answer.

She was right.

Even if others had concealed the pregnancy, I’d created the conditions that allowed their threats to sound believable.

PART 3 — THE YELLOW FOLDER I REFUSED TO OPEN

Claire’s older brother arrived shortly afterward carrying a toolbox.

Andrew Mercer was forty-two, a mechanic accustomed to repairing machinery throughout the mountain communities surrounding their town.

His expression hardened when he recognized me.
