I Overheard My Son Saying on the Phone, ‘Hi, Mom! I’ll Visit You Tomorrow Instead of Going to School!’ — I Decided to Follow Him

I never imagined that trailing my ten-year-old son would lead me to uncover my husband’s hidden life. But the instant I saw that young woman swing open the door and pull my child into a warm embrace, my entire world shattered.

That day, I had just returned from a business trip and finally had a rare day to myself. I spent it tackling housework, grateful to be back.

When my son got home from school, he barely acknowledged me—just a quick, uninterested “hi” before disappearing into his room.

A small pang of hurt settled in my chest. Did he not even care that I was back?

Then… I overheard something that made my heart pound.

While cleaning near his door, I caught snippets of his conversation over the phone. His voice was light, excited—completely different from how he’d spoken to me earlier.

“Hey, Mom! Yeah, school was fine today. I’ll fill you in on my grades tomorrow! I’m skipping school so I can come see you instead, okay? See you soon!”

It felt like someone had yanked the ground out from under me.

Who was he calling “Mom”?

I didn’t question my husband. I didn’t confront my son. I needed to know the truth with my own eyes.

So, the next morning, when he set off for “school,” I quietly followed.

I wasn’t ready for what I saw.

Liam walked past the school, turned onto another street, and knocked on an unfamiliar door. A young woman answered, hugged him, and welcomed him inside.

For 15 minutes, I stood frozen. Then, I knocked firmly.

The woman’s eyes widened. “You’re… Paula.”

“And you are?” I demanded. “Where’s my son?”

Pushing past her, I found Liam sitting comfortably on the couch.

“Are you okay?” I asked, gripping his hands. “Who is this woman?”

“I’m fine!” He pulled away, embarrassed. “This is Melissa.”

Melissa hesitated. “I can explain. Your husband… Benjamin… and I have been seeing each other. For almost a year.”

I choked. “You’re sleeping with my husband—and playing house with my son?”

“Melissa is nice to me, Mom,” Liam said. “She helps me with homework, watches my games. She’s there. You’re always gone.”

Twenty minutes later, Benjamin walked in.

“You’re always chasing work,” he said. “Liam and I… we’re just waiting for you to have time for us.”

I gestured between him and Melissa. “So that justifies this? Teaching our son to lie? Calling another woman ‘Mom’?”

“I like calling her Mom,” Liam said suddenly. “She acts like one.”

His words cut deep. Without another word, I walked out.

Three weeks later, the divorce was finalized. Benjamin packed his things and moved in with Melissa. Liam decided to stay with them most of the time, only agreeing to spend weekends with me.

Now, I’m in therapy, trying to piece together how I let the most important part of my life slip away.

What can I do now? I’d sacrifice everything if it meant salvaging my bond with my son.

I should have realized sooner—no career success could ever replace simply being there.
