Meghan Markle fans shiver at ‘cruel’ scenes from new Netflix episodes as fans say duchess “should be ashamed of herself”

Meghan Markle’s new Netflix series With Love, Meghan has sparked a wave of criticism after a scene showing a lobster being prepared for a meal left viewers outraged.

The controversial moment comes in the second season of the Duchess of Sussex’s lifestyle program, where she is joined in the kitchen by celebrity chef and restaurateur José Andrés. Together, the pair prepare a seafood feast as a treat for the film crew. But the process of hacking into a spiny lobster drew fierce reactions from some onlookers, who deemed the segment “cruel” and “disturbing.”

In the 51-second clip, shared widely on X and Instagram, José can be seen chopping into the lobster while Meghan looks on. Clearly unsettled, she nervously scratches her forehead, covers her face, and winces as the sound of the shell cracking is heard off-camera. At one point, she repeats incredulously how José had referred to the lobster as “baby,” appearing both shocked and uneasy. Meghan admitted she wasn’t entirely comfortable with the process, but acknowledged that eating lobster is “part of the circle of life.” She also revealed that Prince Harry isn’t a fan of the crustacean.

Despite Meghan’s animated expressions, which some fans found endearing, the reaction online was deeply polarized. One X user admitted: “I skipped this part. Too cruel.” Another declared: “Animal cruelty! Meghan should be ashamed of herself for supporting such behaviour.” A third insisted the lobster suffered during filming: “It’s cruel to cut a lobster in half… That lobster felt A LOT of pain.” Others accused the show of turning animal butchery into entertainment, with one commenter asking pointedly: “I wonder where’s the outrage from @peta?”

Some critics went further, questioning how the footage made it past editing. “I love Meghan. And I love the show. But this? Too far, girl, waaaayyyyy too far. I really don’t get how this got past the final cut,” one disappointed fan wrote.

But not all viewers focused on the lobster’s fate. Many saw the humor in Meghan’s discomfort, posting laughing emojis and memes in response. “This scene was hilarious, feel so bad for her,” one fan joked, while another added: “She looks so freaked out!” A third viewer sympathized: “Lol I’m with Meghan, the sounds are… intense.”

The lobster sequence has become one of the most talked-about moments from With Love, Meghan’s new season, highlighting once again how every move by the Duchess of Sussex continues to divide opinion.

Royal Insider has contacted representatives at Netflix and for Meghan Markle for comment.
