Chocolate is undeniably delicious, and it’s unfortunate that most dogs spend their lives never tasting it due to its toxic effects on them.
However, one family chose to make an exception for their beloved dog, offering him a piece of chocolate as a final treat before he was put to sleep.
In a TikTok video shared by user @lushblends26, the family can be seen giving their senior dog a few pieces of a Hershey’s chocolate bar. While experts strongly advise against feeding chocolate to dogs, this family made a heartfelt exception. Their old dog was nearing the end of his life, and they wanted to give him a special moment to cherish before saying goodbye.
“No dog should go to Heaven not knowing how chocolate tastes,” the owner lovingly wrote in the video.
The family ensured the dog didn’t consume enough chocolate to cause any harm, and they shared in the comments that he truly “loved it.”

The decision to euthanize their aging dog came after noticing his quality of life had significantly declined. The owner explained that their veterinarian had advised them to look for signs that their pet was ready to let go—and when those signs came, they knew it was time.
“It was heartbreaking to see him in pain,” she wrote. “The vet told me he’d let me know when he was ready, and he finally gave me those signs.”
Saying goodbye to a cherished pet is never easy. For this family, it meant bidding farewell to a loyal companion who had been with them through so many important milestones.
“My husband got him when we first started dating,” the TikTok user shared. “He was there when my kids were born, grew up, and needed protection. He was always there for me and my family. We miss him so much!”
@lushblends26 You can see he was in so much pain. Hard to get up and it was hard to walk. He lost control of his bowel movements. Stop eating and drinking. Yellow vest helped him get around. The emotional video resonated with many, garnering nearly 2 million views on TikTok. Countless viewers expressed their sympathy and shared their own heartfelt stories of losing beloved pets.
Although chocolate is a beloved treat for humans, it’s widely recognized as unsafe for dogs. The theobromine and caffeine in chocolate can overstimulate a dog’s central nervous system and heart while acting as diuretics. However, the level of risk varies based on the type of chocolate, with milk chocolate being among the least dangerous. In this case, the dog consumed only a small amount, which posed no real risk.
Offering dogs chocolate as a final treat isn’t entirely uncommon. In fact, a veterinary office in Alabama gained attention online for keeping a jar of “goodbye kisses”—Hershey’s Kisses reserved for dogs about to be euthanized.
“This jar is for our euthanasia appointments,” the clinic explained, “because no dog should go to Heaven without tasting chocolate.”
