Woman Sends List of Rules to Wedding Guests – Soon A Lot of Them Start Cancelling

Every bride dreams of the perfect wedding day, where everything goes off without a hitch, from the dress and venue to the catering and music. Yet, despite meticulous planning and careful attention to detail, some aspects remain beyond control, and sometimes even the best-laid plans can encounter unexpected challenges.

In this narrative, a bride-to-be believed she had devised the ideal blueprint for a flawless wedding day. However, as she would soon discover, her vision did not align with everyone else’s expectations. Her story, which sparked a heated debate, underscores the delicate balance between creating a dream wedding and accommodating guests’ comfort and needs.

The story begins on Reddit, in the widely-followed subreddit ‘AITAH’ (Am I The Asshole), where the bride-to-be posted a query she had been grappling with: “Am I being unreasonable?” Her post quickly gained traction, drawing numerous responses and sparking a lively discussion.

The bride explained that she and her fiancé had sent a list of strict rules to their wedding guests, only to be met with a wave of cancellations. She made it clear that these rules were not just her doing; her fiancé had been equally involved and supportive of the decisions.

One of the couple’s primary rules was that they wanted an “unplugged ceremony.” Guests were instructed to leave their phones behind for the duration of both the ceremony and the subsequent dinner, with exceptions made only for significant emergencies. While many guests accepted the no-phone policy during the ceremony, the extension to dinner was met with resistance. Parents, in particular, argued that they needed their phones to check on their children, but the bride stood firm, stating, “Checking with your kids is not an emergency. If something serious happens, you’ll know.”

The couple also imposed a strict color scheme and dress code, requiring guests to wear black attire. Women were to don dresses, and men were expected to wear tuxedos, with no exceptions. This rule proved problematic for some, including the bride’s aunt, who had recently moved away from wearing black after mourning her late husband. The bride’s future sister-in-law, who struggled with body dysmorphia and preferred wearing pants for comfort, also found the dress code difficult to adhere to. Nonetheless, the couple remained inflexible.

Furthermore, the bride shared that they had ordered bridesmaid dresses months in advance and expected the bridesmaids to maintain their weight, whether that required gaining or losing weight. This expectation added to the growing tension among her friends and family.

Unsurprisingly, the bride’s mother was furious about these stringent rules, predicting that the wedding was doomed from the start. Bridesmaids began threatening to drop out, and more guests canceled their attendance at the last minute. One particularly contentious point was the bride’s request for the maid of honor’s daughter, who was supposed to be the flower girl, to stay at a hotel with a babysitter during the ceremony. The maid of honor refused, opting instead to leave her daughter with her own mother due to the wedding venue being a four-hour drive away.

Despite her efforts to justify their rules, the bride found little support on Reddit. The consensus was that she and her fiancé were being unreasonable. Commenters pointed out that while couples are entitled to plan their weddings according to their preferences, guests are equally entitled to decline if they find the conditions too restrictive. The couple’s inflexibility and lack of consideration for their guests’ comfort were seen as overstepping reasonable boundaries.

This story serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of balancing personal desires with the practicalities and feelings of those we invite to share our special moments. While a wedding is undoubtedly a celebration of love and a significant personal milestone, it is also a gathering of family and friends, whose comfort and enjoyment are crucial to the event’s success.
