At His Fortieth Birthday Party, My Husband Laughed At My Postpartum Body In Front Of Everyone. Minutes Later, I Picked Up The Microphone And Said, “Now Let’s Read The Messages You Sent Your Brother’s Wife.” The Party Ended Right There.

Part 2 of 3

The body in the mirror was tired, but it was mine.

I brushed my hair, applied lipstick, added the gold earrings, and walked downstairs without covering myself.

The yard vibrated with music, children splashing, glasses clinking, and meat sizzling over charcoal.

Derek noticed me immediately.

At first, he smiled.

Then he laughed loudly enough to attract everyone’s attention.

Owen joined reflexively before seeing my face and stopping.

“What is funny?” I asked.

Derek raised both hands.

“Do not become sensitive. I was only surprised.”

“Surprised by what?”

He looked around the yard, enjoying the audience.

“Madison just climbed from the pool, and honestly, she looks incredible. You are in a different stage now. There is nothing wrong with that.”

The music continued for several seconds before someone turned it off.

A neighbor lowered her drink. Two former coworkers stared at the ground. Even the children near the shallow end became quieter.

Madison sat frozen on a lounge chair with Rosie against her chest.

Derek smiled nervously.

“Come on, Laura. Everyone knows childbirth changes women. I am not saying anything cruel.”

The humiliation should have made me cry.

Instead, something inside me became still.

I turned, walked into the house, and closed the bedroom door before sitting on the edge of the bed.

A gentle knock came moments later.

“It is Madison.”

I opened the door.

She placed Rosie in the portable crib before sitting beside me.

“I am sorry.”

“You did nothing wrong.”

“I should have spoken sooner.”

She removed her phone. Her fingers were trembling.

“Derek has been messaging me for almost two months.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“What kind of messages?”

“Invitations, photographs, compliments, and statements about your marriage. He told me you no longer loved him and that you remained together only because of the children.”

She unlocked the screen and handed it to me.

There were dozens of messages sent after midnight.

You make me feel like a man again.

Laura stopped caring about herself after the second pregnancy.

Our marriage ended emotionally a long time ago.

Owen does not understand what he has with you.

Give me one chance, and I will leave everything behind.

I scrolled in silence.

Every comparison, every insult, every carefully placed criticism suddenly made sense.

Derek was not merely cruel.

He was constructing a justification.

He needed me to feel unattractive so he could describe his pursuit of Madison as an inevitable response to a failed marriage rather than a betrayal he had chosen.

“Did you answer him?”

“Never. I showed Owen this morning because Derek sent another message while we were driving here. We planned to tell you privately after the party.”

“Why did you wait?”

Madison’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was afraid you might think I encouraged him. I also hoped he would stop when I ignored everything. That was cowardly.”

“No. His behavior belongs to him.”

She nodded toward the window.

“Owen is furious. He will support whatever you decide.”

I looked at my reflection in the mirror.

The woman staring back remained wounded and exhausted, but she was not destroyed.

I stood and held out my hand.

“May I borrow your phone?”

Madison gave it to me.

Downstairs, Derek was attempting to revive the party as though public cruelty were only an awkward joke.

He believed he had won.

The Birthday Speech He Never Expected

I walked toward the wireless microphone beside the rented speakers and switched it on.

A brief burst of feedback silenced the yard.

Derek turned toward me with an uncertain smile.

“Are you finally giving your birthday speech?”

“Yes, Derek. You are forty years old, which seems old enough for everyone to understand exactly what kind of man you have chosen to become.”

Several guests shifted uncomfortably.

Derek lifted his beer.

“This should be entertaining.”

I held Madison’s phone in my other hand.

“For several months, my husband has criticized my body after childbirth. He has told me that I am careless, unattractive, undisciplined, and less feminine than Madison.”

Derek’s expression hardened.

“Do not create a scene.”

“You created the scene when you compared your wife’s body with your brother’s wife in front of your children and guests.”

I continued before he could interrupt.

“I work full-time, care for a four-month-old baby, raise a three-year-old child, manage our household, and pay our mortgage while Derek remains unemployed. During that time, he has repeatedly told me that Madison succeeds because she values herself more than I do.”

A former coworker muttered something beneath his breath.

Derek stepped forward.

“You are twisting private conversations.”

“The conversations were never only about me. They were part of your campaign to pursue Madison.”

His face lost its color.

Owen moved beside his wife while Madison held Rosie protectively.

I lifted the phone.

“Derek wrote, ‘My marriage has been dead for months. Laura no longer resembles the woman I married.’”

Whispers spread across the patio.

Derek pointed toward Madison.

“She is taking those messages out of context.”

I read another.

“‘Being around you makes me feel alive. At home, everything is complaints, babies, and exhaustion.’”

A woman near the food table shook her head.

“Enough,” Derek said.

“You have spoken enough for months. Now I will finish.”

I read the final message.

“‘Give me one opportunity, and I will leave everything. Owen does not need to know until we decide what we want.’”

Owen laughed without humor.

“You planned to steal my wife while I defended you to everyone after your layoff.”

Derek turned on him.

“She encouraged me by reading the messages and staying silent.”

Madison raised her voice.

“I never responded to a single message. I saved them because I knew you would eventually blame me.”

Derek’s mouth opened, but no argument came.

I looked toward the guests.

“Madison brought food when I had no time to eat. She held my daughter so I could finish a warm meal. She played with my son while Derek remained on the sofa. She respected my marriage more than my husband did.”

Caleb stood beside the birthday cake, watching the adults with frightened eyes.
