My Husband Came Home After A Five-Day “Business Trip,” Complaining About Rain And Endless Meetings. Then He Took Off His Shirt. His Back Was Deeply Tanned Except For Four Pale Letters: LIAR. He Had No Idea I Had Seen Them—Or That The Woman Secretly Traveling With Him Had Left Me Enough Clues To Expose The Truth.

Part 2 of 3

Megan paused.

“On the third day of the trip, he was showering and his phone kept ringing. I thought there might be an emergency, so I looked at the screen. Your name appeared several times.”

Lauren remembered texting Eric that morning.

She had written that she loved him, reminded him to call before bed, and asked whether he wanted her to pick up groceries for his return.

“I opened his contacts because I thought you were his cousin,” Megan continued. “Your contact photo showed both of you wearing wedding clothes.”

Lauren leaned against the patio railing.

“What happened when you confronted him?”

“First he said the photograph was old and the divorce was nearly complete. Then he admitted you were still legally married but claimed you had been living separate lives for almost a year.”

“We had breakfast together the morning he left.”

“I eventually realized that.”

Megan’s voice dropped.

“Your messages kept appearing on the screen. You sounded like a wife expecting her husband home.”

Lauren finally asked the question she had been holding.

“Did you write the word on his back?”

Megan gave a short laugh.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“He fell asleep facedown beside the pool. I used sunscreen and cardboard stencils from one of the resort activity signs.”

Despite everything, Lauren almost smiled.

“That required planning.”

“I was furious.”

Megan became serious again.

“Lauren, I am sorry. I truly did not know.”

“I believe you.”

“He told me you were controlling. He said you managed all his money and monitored everywhere he went.”

Lauren looked through the kitchen window toward the home she and Eric had shared.

“I have never checked his phone. I never questioned the business trips. I trusted him.”

Megan answered quietly.

“So did I.”

That was the moment Lauren understood that Eric had not simply cheated on his wife.

He had constructed two separate realities and assigned both women roles that protected him.

Two Women, One Script

Lauren confessed that she had been texting Eric from a prepaid phone while pretending to be Megan.

Megan went silent.

Then she asked to see the messages.

They met the following afternoon at a café outside downtown Columbus.

Megan looked exactly like her photographs except more tired. Dark circles sat beneath her eyes, and she repeatedly twisted a silver ring around one finger.

Lauren noticed it.

“Did Eric give you that?”

Megan removed it.

“He called it a promise ring.”

“What was the promise?”

“That we would move in together before Christmas.”

Christmas was four months away.

Lauren almost laughed.

“He told me we were renovating our guest room before Christmas because my mother might move closer.”

Megan placed the ring on the table.

“He really does prepare different futures for different audiences.”

Lauren showed her the prepaid messages.

Megan showed Lauren months of conversations with Eric.

He claimed his divorce paperwork was almost complete. He discussed apartments, furniture, and future vacations. He told Megan that being with her made him believe marriage might be worth attempting again someday.

Then Lauren discovered something more disturbing.

Eric had described several of his “business trips” over the previous six months as weekends with Megan.

Some had genuinely included sales meetings, but he extended them by one or two days without telling Lauren.

Megan assumed the company knew.

Lauren assumed he was working.

Neither woman possessed the whole calendar.

“I paid for the resort,” Lauren said eventually.

Megan blinked.

“What?”

“He used our joint credit card.”

Megan stared at her.

Then both women began laughing.

It was not amusement.

It was the exhausted laughter of two people discovering that the same man had humiliated them in increasingly ridiculous ways.

When the laughter ended, Megan leaned forward.

“What do you want to do?”

Lauren considered the question.

“I want him to tell the truth when he believes lying is no longer useful.”

During the following week, they tightened the pressure.

Using the prepaid number, Lauren told Eric that Megan had saved photographs, messages, resort receipts, and voice recordings.

Eric begged her not to contact Lauren.

When pleading failed, he offered money.

“How much would make this disappear?” he asked.

Lauren showed Megan.

“Ask for fifteen thousand,” Megan said.

“Why fifteen?”

“Because he told me he had forty thousand saved for our future apartment.”

Lauren and Eric had barely nine thousand dollars in accessible savings.

She typed the demand.

Eric replied:

“I cannot move that much without my wife noticing.”

Megan read the message twice.

“He planned to use your money to pay me for hiding his affair.”

“Apparently honesty is expensive when someone else pays for it.”

Their next step required Megan.

She called Eric from her real number while Lauren sat beside her.

He answered immediately.

“Megan?”

“We need to meet.”

“I already told you that this is over.”

“You spent two months telling me you loved me.”

“Lower your voice.”

Megan looked toward Lauren.

“You are not even near me.”

“Just stop creating problems.”

“Has Lauren seen your back yet?”

Silence followed.

Megan continued.

“I am telling her everything.”

Eric’s response came instantly.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because you will destroy my life.”

“You did that yourself.”

His voice softened.

“Please meet me tomorrow. We can handle this properly.”

He selected a restaurant near his office.

Lauren already knew what she wanted next.

That evening, she sat beside Eric on their sofa while he pretended to watch television.

“Are you happy?” she asked.

He became slightly rigid.

“Of course.”

“I mean with us.”

Eric turned toward her carefully.

“Why are you asking?”

“You have seemed distracted since the trip.”

“Work has been difficult.”

Lauren nodded.

“Maybe we should have dinner tomorrow. Somewhere nice.”

Eric’s expression changed.

“Tomorrow might be difficult. I may have to work late.”

“Still dealing with that conference contract?”

“Exactly.”

The lie arrived without hesitation.

Lauren kissed his cheek.

“Friday, then.”

“Friday works.”

The following evening, Eric left work early and drove directly to the restaurant.

Megan waited inside.

Lauren remained across the street in a rented vehicle, listening through Megan’s phone.

Eric sat down without ordering anything.

“What do you want?”

“I want you to tell Lauren yourself.”

“Absolutely not.”

“Then I will.”

Eric lowered his voice.

“You do not understand her. Lauren is emotionally unstable when she feels cornered.”

Lauren gripped the steering wheel.

Megan remained calm.

“Unstable how?”

“She twists things. She becomes vindictive. If you tell her, she will ruin both our lives.”

“Our lives?”

Eric realized his mistake.

“You know what I mean.”

Megan leaned forward.

“She already knows about the resort.”
