Life Short Tales Moral Stories

At Eight Months Pregnant, I Found My Husband Holding Another Woman’s Hand Outside A Baby Boutique. She Pulled Out An Ultrasound And Said, “He Told Me You Were Separated.” I Answered, “I Slept Beside Him Last Night.” Then I Learned She Was Fourteen Weeks Pregnant—and That He Had Lied To Both Of Us.

Part 2 of 3

“No,” I said. “He wanted to keep me ignorant until Sophie was born because he thought I would be too afraid to leave afterward.”

Margaret began crying.

This time I felt no sympathy.

“You knew enough to meet Brooke.”

“Daniel told me you were leaving him.”

“And you attended my baby shower while believing that?”

She had no answer.

Part 4 — The Investment That Wasn’t Supposed to Fail

Margaret eventually explained where part of the money had gone.

Daniel had invested heavily in a real-estate development promoted by a flashy developer named Gavin Ross.

I knew Gavin’s reputation.

Daniel admired men like him because they seemed to transform confidence into wealth without ever appearing uncertain. Gavin drove exotic cars, entertained investors in private clubs, and talked about mixed-use developments as though every empty parcel of land were already worth ten times the purchase price.

Rachel asked the question I should have asked earlier.

“Was it actually an investment?”

Margaret hesitated.

“That is what Daniel called it.”

“What do you call it?”

Her answer came quietly.

“A disaster.”

She told us Daniel had come to her house after the mall confrontation, furious that Brooke had spoken to me.

He insisted I needed to return home immediately.

“Why?” I asked.

“He said there were financial papers that required your signature.”

Every muscle in my shoulders tightened.

Rachel mouthed, Do not go back.

I had already decided that.

“Margaret, if Daniel contacts you again, do not tell him where I am.”

“Lauren, he is still my son.”

“Then decide whether being his mother requires helping him deceive everyone else.”

I ended the call.

Within thirty minutes, Rachel found an attorney named Allison Grant who handled family law and complex marital property disputes.

Allison listened without interrupting.

Her first question was not about divorce.

“Are you somewhere Daniel cannot enter without permission?”

“Yes.”

“Stay there tonight. Do not return home alone, do not sign anything, and do not start moving significant funds until we verify the accounts.”

“Can he take my house?”

“We do not know enough yet.”

Her caution frightened me more than reassurance would have.

Part 5 — The Other Woman Calls Me

At 12:38 that night, Daniel began sending messages.

“You’re destroying our family over one mistake.”

Then:

“Brooke means nothing.”

Another followed less than a minute later.

“Come home before lawyers make this worse.”

The fourth message was different.

“If you interfere with my business finances, you will regret it.”

I photographed every message and forwarded them to Allison.

Several minutes later, an unfamiliar number contacted me.

“This is Brooke. Margaret gave me your number. I think Daniel took money from me too.”

I sat upright.

Brooke sent a screenshot showing a $68,000 transfer into Brooks Capital Services, Daniel’s company.

Then another transfer appeared.

Her total exceeded ninety thousand dollars.

When I called, she answered immediately.

“He said he needed it for a deposit on the house where we would raise our son.”

I closed my eyes.

“Preserve every message and bank record.”

“I already have.”

Then Brooke told me about Daniel’s second phone.

He had forgotten it at her apartment several nights earlier.

She looked through it after seeing repeated messages from someone named Monica Pierce.

Brooke initially suspected another affair.

Instead, she found discussions involving money, account numbers, and Daniel’s financial problems.

More disturbing were messages between Daniel and Margaret.

Brooke read them aloud.

Daniel had written that I could not discover the loan before giving birth because I would leave.

Margaret answered that he should have considered that before impregnating Brooke.

Daniel replied that he could “manage Lauren” because I always forgave him.

Another message said that after Sophie arrived I would never destroy my own family.

I felt nauseated.

My daughter had become part of his risk calculation.

Brooke continued reading until she reached one message that made her voice break.

Margaret had asked what Daniel planned to do when Brooke wanted him full-time.

Daniel answered:

“She’ll calm down after the baby comes. They both will.”

Two pregnant women.

Two unborn children.

One man who believed all four of us could be managed according to his financial convenience.

Part 6 — The Signature That Looked Almost Like Mine

The following morning, Rachel drove me to Allison’s office in downtown Minneapolis.

The property report was already waiting.

Our home still listed both Daniel and me as owners.

That was the only good news.

The title also showed a home-equity line opened eleven months earlier for $310,000.

“I never approved that.”

Allison slid another page across the table.

There was my signature.

Except it was not mine.

Someone had imitated my handwriting convincingly, but the first letter in my last name leaned at the wrong angle. Worse, the final stroke curved upward exactly the way Daniel ended his own signature.

“That is forged.”

“You are certain?”

“Completely.”

Allison immediately began preparing formal notices disputing the signature and requested the lender preserve the original application, identification records, electronic logs, and closing documentation.

Then we reviewed the disbursements.

Almost the entire credit line had been transferred into Daniel’s business before being divided among several entities.

Ross Urban Development.

Northline Equity Partners.

And Pierce Advisory LLC.

Rachel pointed toward the last company.

“Monica?”

Allison searched state corporate records.

Monica Pierce appeared as the registered agent.

Her professional profile identified her as a financial adviser, approximately forty years old, who previously served as chief financial officer for one of Gavin Ross’s development companies.

This was no longer merely about adultery.

Daniel had been moving large amounts of borrowed money through a network connected to the same developer.

Then he called.

Allison nodded when I asked whether I should answer.

I put the phone on speaker.

“Where are you?” Daniel demanded.

“With my attorney.”

Silence.

I continued.

“You forged my signature.”

Another silence followed, longer than the first.

Then Daniel asked, “Who told you that?”

Allison raised one eyebrow.

I almost smiled.

“Interesting question for someone who believes he did nothing wrong.”

Daniel’s breathing changed.

“Come home and we can fix this.”

“Explain the home-equity line.”

“You don’t understand the deal.”

“Then explain it.”

He resisted for nearly a minute before his voice finally cracked.

“Gavin is holding my money.”

Allison immediately asked, “How much?”

Daniel realized someone else was listening.

“Who is that?”

“My lawyer.”

His confidence disappeared.
