Now Grant was no longer my husband.

I authorized my communications team to confirm whatever public records already established.

There would be no interviews about the divorce.

No comments about Paige.

No attempt to humiliate Grant.

I wanted privacy more than revenge.

That same evening, Carter entered my office with an uncomfortable expression.

“Grant tried to use one of your supplementary credit cards.”

I looked away from the water.

“For what?”

“A jewelry purchase for forty-eight thousand dollars.”

I almost laughed.

Apparently, he had attempted to purchase Paige’s new engagement ring with a card attached to my account.

The transaction failed because supplementary access terminated automatically when our divorce became final.

Minutes later, Grant contacted me from another number.

“Why did you cancel my card?”

“It was not your account anymore.”

“This is childish. Paige and I were trying to buy her ring.”

“The closure was explained in the settlement you signed.”

He continued arguing until I ended the call.

Then I blocked that number too and instructed Carter that all future communication from Grant should be directed to counsel.

The next morning, the ownership analysis became public.

By noon, financial networks were identifying me as the founder and controlling shareholder behind Mercer Global Holdings.

The estimated ten-billion-dollar figure appeared everywhere.

My phone filled with messages from former colleagues, distant acquaintances, and people who had not contacted me in years.

Then another unknown number sent a message.

Did you hide this from me?

I knew immediately who had written it.

For several seconds, I considered responding.

I wanted to remind Grant about every disclosure, annual report, ownership document, and legal schedule that had been available to his attorneys.

Instead, I deleted the message.

Explaining myself was another form of labor I no longer owed him.

PART 4: THE DIVORCE RECORD TOLD A DIFFERENT STORY

Grant began telling mutual friends that I had deceived him.

According to his revised version of events, I had somehow allowed him to negotiate a divorce without understanding my true financial position.

The problem was that the legal file contradicted him.

His attorney had received financial disclosures.

His attorney had recommended deeper valuation work.

Grant declined because he wanted the agreement completed before his wedding.

He aggressively negotiated for the Back Bay brownstone, the Tesla, and most of our joint cash while repeatedly dismissing my corporate interests as risky, complicated investments.

No one prevented him from asking questions.

He simply believed he already knew enough.

An old friend named Jenna Walsh eventually called.

“Grant has been telling people your companies were barely profitable during the marriage.”

I stared at my laptop.

“He has been telling people that for years.”

“Now he says you tricked him.”

“The records are clear.”

“I know. His own attorney apparently told him to wait.”

That was the tragedy of Grant’s situation.

Nobody had outsmarted him.

He had underestimated me so completely that caution felt unnecessary.

Meanwhile, my workload remained intense, but something unexpected changed after the divorce.

I stopped feeling permanently exhausted.

For years, every successful negotiation was followed by the emotional work of returning home and pretending it did not matter very much.

Now I could celebrate a completed acquisition without worrying that Grant would accuse me of showing off.

I could discuss earnings without lowering my voice.

I could exist at full size.

Only after the marriage ended did I understand how much energy I had spent making success appear smaller than it really was.

PART 5: AN INVITATION I DID NOT EXPECT

Three days before Grant and Paige’s wedding, a cream envelope arrived at my Washington residence.

They had invited me.

Carter examined the invitation twice.

“This is actually real.”

“Apparently.”

Paige, according to the enclosed note, believed my attendance would demonstrate that no hostility remained between us.

I declined politely and sent a neutral wedding gift.

I had no desire to turn their marriage into a battlefield.

Whatever Grant had done, I wanted freedom more than revenge.

Unfortunately, financial reporters had become fascinated by the timing.

Grant was preparing for an extravagant wedding only weeks after divorcing a woman newly identified as the controlling owner behind one of the country’s most valuable private investment groups.

Commentators began asking why he had taken a townhouse, vehicle, and cash while leaving the corporate interests untouched.

Some online voices portrayed me as a calculating mastermind who had deliberately trapped him.

I disliked that version almost as much as Grant probably did.

There had been no trap.

There had only been disclosure followed by arrogance.

On the morning of his wedding, photographs began arriving from Boston.

Grant wore a black tuxedo.

Paige wore an elaborate white gown.

The hotel was filled with flowers, lights, music, and everything he had promised her.

They looked genuinely happy.

To my surprise, I felt no jealousy.

That was the moment I understood I truly did not want him back.

I simply wanted my past to remain where it belonged.

Outside the hotel, however, reporters gathered behind barricades.

My communications director warned me that one of Grant’s guests had apparently told journalists that Grant believed my investments had only been worth a few million dollars.

That statement conflicted spectacularly with public records.

I instructed my staff to remain silent.

Nobody working for me was permitted to celebrate Grant’s embarrassment online.

Hours later, Carter entered my library carrying a tablet.
