“The Underwear Is Mine. But It Isn’t In His Bag For The Reason You Think.” My Husband’s Secretary Finally Said. I Thought I Had Just Found His Mistress. I Was Wrong. The Black Lace Led Me To A Secret Company Apartment, Another Married Woman, And An Affair My Husband Had Been Hiding For Almost A Year.

Part 1 of 3

PART 1 – THE BLACK LACE HIDDEN IN HIS GYM BAG

I discovered the black lace underwear on an ordinary Wednesday evening while emptying my husband’s gym bag before doing laundry.

For several seconds, I stood motionless in our bedroom, holding the unfamiliar garment between my fingers.

My mind understood what I was looking at.

But it resisted drawing the obvious conclusion.

My name is Claire Mercer.

Grant Mercer had been my husband for eleven years.

He was also the chief executive officer of Mercer Systems, a successful technology company founded by his grandfather and still strongly associated with the Mercer family.

The underwear was not mine.

There was no uncertainty about that.

I did not recognize the fabric, the style, or the size.

I could have confronted Grant immediately.

I could have called him and demanded an explanation.

Instead, I placed the underwear exactly where I had found it and took a photograph before closing the gym bag.

Then I said nothing for two days.

Grant was extraordinarily talented at explaining difficult situations.

I had watched him enter board meetings facing five furious directors and emerge half an hour later having convinced everyone that their concerns were exaggerated, misunderstood, or already being addressed.

He could turn almost any accusation into a discussion about context.

He could make uncomfortable questions sound unreasonable.

And he could speak with such confidence that people sometimes forgot what they had originally wanted to know.

I did not want Grant’s explanation to be the first piece of information I received.

I wanted to observe someone else’s reaction.

The most obvious person was his executive secretary, Elise Harper.

Two evenings later, Mercer Systems held its annual Christmas party at its corporate headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The offices had been decorated with tasteful holiday arrangements.

Employees moved between conference rooms carrying champagne glasses and small plates of appetizers.

Everywhere, people exchanged carefully cheerful conversations about the holidays, upcoming plans, and the company’s achievements.

Elise was standing near her desk when I approached.

She had been smiling at something a colleague said.

The smile disappeared when she noticed me.

“Claire. Are you having a good evening?”

I returned a pleasant smile.

“Actually, I am.”

Then I opened my handbag.

I removed a cream-colored envelope and placed it carefully on the edge of her desk.

“I think this belongs to you.”

Elise looked at the envelope.

“What is it?”

I opened it just enough to reveal the black lace inside.

The color drained from her face.

I watched carefully.

Her expression was not confusion.

It was not indignation.

And it was not the reaction of someone seeing a stranger’s underwear for the first time.

It was recognition.

That gave me the first answer I had been looking for.

Elise swallowed.

“Claire, I can explain.”

Interesting.

She did not ask where I had found it.

She already seemed to know.

Before she could continue, Grant appeared from the conference room.

He moved so quickly that two employees standing nearby stopped talking.

“Claire.”

His eyes moved to the envelope.

Then to Elise.

Then back to me.

His expression changed immediately.

“What the hell are you doing?”

That reaction was even more revealing.

He did not ask what the envelope contained.

He already knew.

I moved it slightly closer to Elise.

“I’m returning something my husband accidentally brought home.”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

“This isn’t the place for this conversation.”

I looked at him.

“Apparently, your gym bag was an appropriate place for it.”

Elise closed her eyes.

Grant reached toward my arm.

I stepped away before he could touch me.

“Don’t.”

By then, several nearby employees had stopped pretending they were not listening.

Grant lowered his voice.

“Come with me.”

“No.”

A senior vice president appeared near the conference room.

“Is everything all right?”

Grant immediately produced the polished smile I knew so well.

“Just a misunderstanding.”

I looked directly at him.

“Actually, things are becoming considerably clearer.”

Elise whispered:

“Please.”

I had expected her to become defensive.

Perhaps she would deny everything.

Perhaps she would display the smug confidence of someone who believed she had successfully taken another woman’s husband.

But she did neither.

She looked frightened.

And that frightened me.

Embarrassment and panic are not the same emotion.

I picked up my handbag and walked toward the elevator.

Grant followed immediately.

As the doors began closing, he reached forward and stopped them with one hand.

“We’re discussing this right now.”

I looked at his hand.

“Move.”

“Not until you explain exactly what you think you’re doing.”

I almost admired the audacity.

Even now, he was trying to turn the situation into something I needed to justify.

“I discovered another woman’s underwear in my husband’s gym bag. I brought it back to the person I believed owned it.”

Grant glanced over his shoulder.

He appeared suddenly aware that several employees could see us.

Then Elise called from the hallway.

“Grant, let her leave.”

The elevator doors opened again.

She walked toward us.

“Tell her.”

Grant gave her a warning look.

“Elise.”

She did not retreat.

“Tell her now.”

Something passed between them.

It was not affection.

It was fear.

I stepped out of the elevator.

“Tell me what?”

Elise took a breath.

“The underwear is mine.”

Grant spoke sharply.

“Stop talking.”

She ignored him.

“But it isn’t in his bag for the reason you think.”

That sentence opened the door to a situation far larger than the one I had imagined.

PART 2 – THE APARTMENT I NEVER KNEW ABOUT

Elise refused to continue the conversation in the hallway.

We moved into an empty meeting room with glass walls overlooking the decorated office.

Grant closed the door.

Elise remained standing beside the conference table.

Her hands were trembling.

“I left the underwear in an apartment,” she said.

I stared at her.

“What apartment?”

Grant answered before she could.

“A company apartment.”

Elise shook her head.

“That isn’t the full explanation.”

Grant turned toward her.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

She looked at him.

“I approve the reimbursement paperwork, Grant.”

My stomach tightened.

Elise explained that Mercer Systems paid for a luxury apartment in Charlotte’s South End neighborhood.

Officially, it was reserved for visiting executives and senior employees who needed accommodation while traveling through the city.

But over time, Grant had begun treating it as his own private space.

I looked at Elise.

“And how does your underwear fit into this?”

She looked mortified.

“I stayed there after the company gala in September.”

I turned toward Grant.

“With him?”

Elise answered immediately.

“No.”

“Then who were you with?”

“My boyfriend. Marcus Reed.”

I recognized the name.

Marcus worked in the finance department at Mercer Systems.

Elise explained that they had been dating privately.

Both knew company policy prohibited employees from using the executive apartment for personal purposes.

Their unauthorized stay had violated that policy, so they had kept it secret.

During the visit, Elise had accidentally left her underwear inside a drawer.

Several months later, another woman discovered it.

I looked at her.

“Who found it?”

Elise hesitated.

Grant interrupted.

“Claire, we’re going home.”

I ignored him.

“Who found your underwear, Elise?”

Her voice dropped.

“Vanessa Cole.”

I recognized the name immediately.

Vanessa was married to Thomas Cole, a member of the Mercer Systems board of directors.

Thomas’s family investment fund owned a significant minority stake in the company.

My hands went cold.

“Why was Vanessa inside that apartment?”

Elise let out a small, broken laugh.

Grant closed his eyes.

I turned toward my husband.

“Grant?”

He rubbed his face.

“Vanessa and I became close.”

I stared at him.

“How close?”

He said nothing.

“Grant.”

Finally, he answered.

“Too close.”

“For how long?”

He looked away.

“Almost a year.”

Suddenly, the black lace underwear seemed almost insignificant.

I had suspected the wrong woman.

Grant was having an affair.

But it was not with Elise.

And the person he was sleeping with was married to a man who helped oversee his company.

Elise continued explaining because Grant clearly had no intention of telling the complete story.

Vanessa had discovered the underwear in the apartment and assumed Grant was having an affair with someone else as well.

The absurdity nearly made me laugh.

My husband’s mistress had found another woman’s underwear inside their secret meeting place and felt betrayed.

Vanessa threatened to tell Thomas.

Grant panicked.

He instructed Elise to go to the apartment and explain that the underwear belonged to her, not to another romantic partner.

Eventually, Vanessa believed the explanation.

I looked at Elise.

“Then why did it end up in Grant’s gym bag?”

She pressed her lips together.

“He told me to remove it before housekeeping came.”

I turned toward my husband.

“So you knowingly carried another woman’s underwear home.”

Grant’s temper finally broke.

“It wasn’t sexual!”

I laughed.

I could not help it.

“Congratulations, Grant. The underwear may be the least inappropriate thing you’ve done.”

Elise apologized.

Then I asked whether she had known about Vanessa before the incident at the apartment.

“No,” she said.

I believed her.

She was clearly ashamed of using the apartment without permission.

But she seemed genuinely frightened of Grant.

Those were different reactions, and I was beginning to understand the distinction.

“Then why are you telling me all of this now?” I asked.

Elise glanced through the glass wall toward the Christmas party.

Then she looked back at me.
