Part 2 of 3

PART 4 — THE BILL MY FATHER PLACED ON THE TABLE

Patricia welcomed Dad with exaggerated enthusiasm.

Brandon pulled out the chair at the head of our dining table.

My father entered wearing his familiar brown leather jacket and carrying a black briefcase.

He thanked them for dinner before placing the case beside his plate.

“Robert, you’ve brought the property documents already! I suppose we’re finally making everything official.”

Patricia smiled broadly.

Dad opened the briefcase.

“I’ve brought documents concerning the apartment, Patricia, although they’re not the ones you’re expecting.”

He removed a copy of the signed lease.

Then he placed a payment notice directly in front of Brandon.

“Before we discuss anybody’s future plans, who intends to pay the $1,200 rent due today?”

The room became completely silent.

Brandon looked at the document.

“Mr. Carter, I thought you were giving us this apartment as our wedding present.”

Dad adjusted his glasses.

“I never offered to give anyone this property, and Allison signed a lease with me before the wedding.”

Patricia leaned forward.

“But you own three townhouses, Robert. Surely one little apartment doesn’t matter to someone with your money.”

Dad’s expression remained unchanged.

“The property matters because I worked for it, and my daughter deserves to understand exactly what financial responsibilities she’s accepting.”

I turned toward Brandon.

“We discussed this at the café when we selected our furniture. You agreed that each of us would contribute $600 monthly.”

He avoided my eyes.

Dad continued explaining that the townhouses were occupied by paying tenants.

Those properties supported legitimate expenses, maintenance obligations, and long-term investments.

They weren’t vacant gifts waiting to be distributed to relatives.

Patricia’s face reddened.

“I cannot believe a successful father would charge his own daughter rent instead of helping her start married life.”

Dad looked directly at her.

“Charging less than half the market rate is assistance, Patricia, but teaching my daughter to depend indefinitely on somebody else’s money would be doing her a disservice.”

Brandon attempted to change the conversation.

He described his desire to pursue new opportunities through online investment courses.

Dad listened carefully.

“How long do you expect Allison to cover your responsibilities while you explore these opportunities?”

Brandon hesitated.

“Perhaps six months, although it could take a year before I find something that feels right.”

Dad folded his hands.

“And during that year, who pays the rent, utilities, groceries, insurance, and the expenses your mother has listed?”

Brandon looked toward me.

“Allison makes more than $130,000 annually, and we won’t really need two incomes if we’re careful.”

I stared at him.

He hadn’t even bothered pretending that my preferences mattered.

My income had become the foundation of a plan I hadn’t agreed to join.

PART 5 — THE TWO-MONTH PLAN FINALLY COMES OUT

Dad leaned back.

“So my daughter will continue working full-time while you pursue an indefinite break from employment and your mother enjoys an equally indefinite retirement?”

Brandon frowned.

“You’re making it sound selfish when I’m simply trying to find a better direction for my life.”

Dad didn’t raise his voice.

“Taking time to reconsider your career isn’t selfish, Brandon, but forcing someone else to finance it through deception certainly is.”

Patricia slammed her palm against the table.

The wineglasses rattled.

“My son has worked since he finished high school, and he deserves a chance to relax without being interrogated!”

I finally spoke.

“Nobody is preventing Brandon from changing careers, but he should have discussed the financial consequences before we got married.”

Patricia pointed at me.

“You’re supposed to support your husband, Allison, not humiliate him in front of his own family!”

I could feel my heartbeat in my throat.

“Support requires honesty, Patricia, and Brandon deliberately withheld information that would have changed my decision about the wedding.”

Brandon lowered his gaze.

I asked him directly when the plan began.

He remained silent.

Patricia answered for him.

“We started discussing everything two months ago, and there’s nothing shameful about preparing for a better future.”

Two months.

While I was meeting florists and choosing wedding invitations, Brandon had been discussing when to resign.

While we reviewed our future household budget, he’d been planning to avoid earning his share.

While my parents proudly welcomed him into the family, he and Patricia were calculating what they could obtain from Dad’s property holdings.

“You waited until after the ceremony because you knew I wouldn’t agree to marry you under these conditions,” I said.

Brandon reached toward my hand.

“I genuinely love you, Allison, and I believed we could finally enjoy life without constantly worrying about money.”

I withdrew my hand.

“You mean you wanted to stop worrying about money while expecting me and my father to provide it.”

He didn’t deny it.

Dad closed his briefcase.

“Allison, I’m asking you one question, and I want you to answer without considering how anybody else might react.”

I looked at him.

“Do you want to continue this marriage under the conditions Brandon and Patricia have admitted planning?”

I studied my wedding ring.

Twenty-four hours earlier, I believed it represented a promise of mutual responsibility.

Now it felt like evidence that somebody had exploited my trust.

“No, Dad. I don’t want to continue a marriage built on a plan that was deliberately concealed from me.”

Brandon jumped from his chair.

“We just got married yesterday! You can’t seriously throw everything away over one disagreement!”

I stood.

“This isn’t a disagreement about money, Brandon. It’s a betrayal involving decisions you intentionally hid until you thought I couldn’t leave.”

PART 6 — THE SUITCASES THAT WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO LEAVE

Patricia rose so abruptly that her chair scraped across the floor.

“You’ve always been spoiled by money, Allison, and my son could have married someone who actually understood what supporting a husband means!”

Dad stood beside me.

“Supporting a spouse doesn’t mean surrendering personal autonomy or allowing another family to make unlimited claims on your earnings.”

Then he explained that Patricia had no authorization to establish permanent residence in the apartment.

Her overnight arrival violated the expectations under which the property had been rented.

He also made clear that any dispute about Brandon’s occupancy would have to follow the applicable legal process.

“For tonight, I expect everyone to leave peacefully while Allison considers the necessary legal arrangements,” Dad said.

Patricia clutched her chest dramatically.

“I’m nearly sixty years old, and I’ve resigned from my job and surrendered my apartment. Are you really going to leave me homeless?”

I watched Brandon rush toward her.

For a moment, I wondered whether she genuinely needed medical help.

Dad offered to call emergency services.

Patricia immediately straightened.

“There’s no need to involve an ambulance, Robert, because I simply cannot believe how cruelly we’re being treated.”

I approached her.

“If you were experiencing a genuine emergency, I would help you obtain appropriate care, but I won’t fund a retirement you arranged without anyone’s consent.”

Brandon turned toward me.

“Allison, please don’t make a permanent decision while you’re angry. We could work something out for the first few months.”

I studied him.
