Part 1 of 3

The Man From the Life I Left Behind

Three years after I disappeared from my marriage, the man I had spent every day avoiding finally stood outside my apartment.

Roman Ellery looked older than I remembered. His black coat was wet from the rain, and exhaustion had settled into the sharp lines of his face. But his eyes had not changed.

They were the same deep amber eyes my children had inherited.

He stared past me at six-year-old Miles and Cora, who were sitting on the living-room floor beside a pile of wooden blocks.

For several long seconds, Roman could not speak.

Then he whispered, “They’re mine.”

It was not a question.

I tightened my hand around the door.

“You need to leave.”

His gaze returned to me.

“Elowen, I spent three years searching for you.”

“And I spent three years building a life where you could never hurt us.”

His face tightened.

“What you saw that night was not what you believed.”

I almost laughed.

That sentence had arrived three years too late.

I closed the door before he could say anything else.

The Night My Marriage Ended

The night I left Roman began with a celebration at our home outside Chicago.

Roman had just closed the largest business agreement of his career, and more than a hundred guests filled our house. Music drifted through the halls, champagne flowed freely, and every room seemed to glow beneath warm lights.

My younger sister, Taryn, had been living with us for six weeks.

She had arrived with unpaid bills, two suitcases and tears in her eyes. She said she had nowhere else to go. Although our relationship had always been complicated, I welcomed her because she was family.

Near midnight, I went upstairs to find Roman.

Our bedroom door was partly closed.

Then I heard Taryn laughing inside.

It was a soft, familiar laugh—the one she used whenever she wanted someone’s attention.

I pushed the door open.

Taryn stood beside our bed wearing my silk robe. Roman was near her, his shirt open at the collar. His expression was strange and unfocused, but I was too shocked to understand what that meant.

Taryn looked at me first.

For one brief moment, something like triumph crossed her face.

Then she began to cry.

“Elowen, please—”

Roman turned toward me slowly.

“Wait,” he said.

But he did not explain.

He did not cross the room quickly enough.

And I did not stay.

I walked out of our home with a small emergency envelope my grandmother had once told me to keep hidden. It contained cash, an old bank card and the key to a storage locker.

Before sunrise, I was gone.

Several weeks later, I discovered that I was expecting a child.

Soon afterward, a doctor told me there were two heartbeats.

By then, I had already decided that Roman would never know.

The Life I Built in Briar Glen

I eventually settled in Briar Glen, a quiet Vermont town surrounded by wooded hills and small family farms.

Maeve Pollard, the owner of a bakery beneath my apartment, gave me a job even though I had very little experience.

She claimed my cinnamon rolls were only “slightly better than disappointing,” but she taught me everything she knew.

Over time, the bakery became my safe place.

I raised Miles and Cora above the shop. Cora was curious, fearless and always talking. Miles was quieter. He noticed details that other people missed and asked questions only after thinking carefully.

We did not have the luxurious life I once shared with Roman, but we had peace.

At least, I thought we did.

The morning after Roman found us, Maeve came upstairs and found me folding the same shirt for the third time.

She looked toward the twins.

Then she looked at me.

“The man outside has their eyes.”

I sat down heavily.

“He’s their father.”

Maeve lowered herself into the chair opposite me.

“Does he know?”

“He does now.”

“Is he dangerous?”

I stared at my hands.

“I don’t know who he is anymore.”

Maeve nodded slowly.

“Then do not decide too quickly. Fear can warn us, but it can also keep us trapped inside an old version of the truth.”

That evening, I found an envelope beneath the bakery’s back door.

Roman had written my name across the front.

Inside was a photograph of him in a hospital hallway on the night I disappeared. A clean bandage covered one side of his forehead, and his left wrist was wrapped.

There was also a short note.

I am not asking you to forgive me.

But I need you to know that I was not fully aware of what was happening that night.

I have proof.

I never stopped looking for you.

Roman.

The Evidence He Carried

The next morning, Roman waited across the street from the bakery.

He did not approach me until I stepped outside.

“You have five minutes,” I told him.

Roman took a breath.

“Taryn put something in my drink.”

I stared at him.

“That is convenient.”

“I know how it sounds.”

He handed me a medical report from Dr. Silas Ketter, the private physician who had treated him that night.
