The Purple Note

Miriam Ashby was seventy-three years old, and the cream-colored suitcase standing beside her looked far too modern for a woman who had spent most of her life in the same quiet neighborhood.

Her son, Travis Ashby, had purchased it only a few days earlier.

He had smiled when he handed it to her.

“You deserve to rest, Mom.”

Then he explained that she would be spending several months in England.

“A change of scenery will be good for you,” he said. “You’ll be more comfortable there, and I’ll make sure everything is taken care of.”

Miriam wanted to believe him.

After all, she had already lost her husband, Leonard. Travis was her only child, and she had spent her entire life loving him with the fierce devotion only a mother could understand.

Yet, as she stood inside Salt Lake City International Airport, watching strangers hurry past with coffee cups, backpacks, and boarding passes, an uneasy feeling settled over her heart.

Something was wrong.

Travis stood at the check-in counter, speaking confidently with an airline employee. He looked kind, patient, and responsible.

To everyone around them, he appeared to be a devoted son caring for his aging mother.

Only Miriam knew how different he had become.

Little by little, he had taken control of nearly every part of her life.

First, he insisted on paying her bills.

Then he asked to review her financial statements.

Soon afterward, he collected the spare keys to her home.

Each time, his explanation sounded perfectly reasonable.

“You shouldn’t have to worry about all of this anymore, Mom.”

And because she trusted him, she allowed it.

The Child Who Stopped Smiling

Miriam’s nine-year-old granddaughter, Sadie, stood quietly nearby with a stuffed rabbit pressed against her chest.

There had once been a time when the little girl never stopped talking.

She used to chatter about school projects, birthday parties, movies, and the flowers growing in her grandmother’s garden.

Lately, however, her laughter had disappeared.

Even more troubling, she seemed afraid of her own father.

For several weeks, Sadie had been drawing the same picture repeatedly.

The sketch showed Miriam’s old house in Loveland, Colorado.

One of the upstairs windows was crossed out.

Near the back of the house, a small black square appeared beside the sewing room.

Whenever Miriam asked about it, Sadie would lower her eyes.

“That’s where Grandpa hid the important thing,” she whispered.

Miriam assumed the child was simply imagining stories.

She never thought much about it.

Until that morning.

While Travis continued speaking with airline staff, Sadie slowly walked toward her grandmother.

Her small fingers were trembling.

Without saying another word, she slipped a folded piece of paper into Miriam’s hand.

“Grandma, please read it when Dad isn’t watching.”

Miriam’s heart skipped a beat.

She opened the paper slightly.

In the center of the page, written in purple crayon, was a single word.

RUN.

Before she could react, Travis turned around.

“What did she give you?”

Miriam folded the paper immediately.

“Nothing important. Just another drawing.”

Travis smiled.

But there was no warmth in his eyes.

“We need to go, Mom. The plane will leave soon.”

Sadie lowered her head.

For the first time, Miriam realized that the child wasn’t shy.

She was frightened.

The Decision That Changed Everything

A few minutes later, Miriam looked up at her son.

“I need to use the restroom.”

Travis glanced impatiently at his watch.

“Right now?”

“I won’t be long.”

He sighed quietly.

“Five minutes, Mom.”

Instead of turning toward the restroom entrance, Miriam walked slowly toward the terminal exit.

The automatic doors slid open.

Cool morning air touched her face.

She unfolded the note completely.

RUN.

DO NOT GET ON THE PLANE.

FIND THE BLACK SQUARE.

Beneath the message was another drawing of her house.

Her phone vibrated almost immediately.

One message appeared after another.

Where are you?

Come back.

You’re making this difficult.

Sadie is upset because of you.

Miriam closed her eyes.

The last message hurt the most.

Her granddaughter had taken an enormous risk to warn her.
