Dean will be honored in a private funeral attended only by immediate family, reflecting his lifelong preference for privacy. Parton met Dean on her first day in Nashville in 1964, two years before they married. She had just arrived in town to stay with her Uncle Bill when a chance encounter at a laundromat changed her life.

“I was surprised and delighted that while he talked to me, he looked at my face (a rare thing for me). He seemed to be genuinely interested in finding out who I was and what I was about,” Parton recalled.
Initially hesitant to go out with him, she instead invited him to visit her uncle’s house while she babysat. He accepted, coming by every day that week, spending time with her on the porch. When she finally agreed to go somewhere with him, he took her straight to meet his parents, saying he knew from the moment he saw her that she was the one.
They married on Memorial Day in 1966 in a small ceremony in Ringgold, Georgia, attended only by Parton’s mother, the preacher, and his wife.
