Part 2 of 3

“Yes.”

He reached for his coat.

“I’m coming home.”

The Quietest Trip Bennett Ever Made

Bennett did not contact most of his usual team.

He called only three people.

His independent attorney.

His longtime security coordinator, Marcus Vail.

And a financial compliance specialist who had been quietly reviewing Cross Meridian’s records for months.

Within hours, Bennett was aboard an overnight commercial flight to New York.

He did not sleep.

Instead, he reviewed documents.

The deeper he looked, the clearer the pattern became.

Money had been redirected through consulting agreements, property companies, and overseas entities.

Celeste had assumed Bennett was too distracted by the investigation to notice.

What she did not know was that the investigation itself was nearing resolution.

Bennett had spent months helping his attorneys trace the transactions that had originally placed suspicion on him.

And some of those trails were now leading directly toward Gavin.

When Bennett landed in New York the following afternoon, Marcus was waiting.

They entered an SUV without exchanging greetings.

“Where is she?” Bennett asked.

“Still at the house.”

Bennett exhaled.

“And Celeste?”

“She left for tonight’s Cross Meridian Children’s Fund reception about forty minutes ago.”

Marcus handed him a tablet.

“We also identified the woman expected to collect Lila.”

Bennett studied the screen.

“Is she from a legitimate placement organization?”

Marcus shook his head.

“No. The paperwork doesn’t match any authorized organization we could verify.”

Bennett stared through the windshield.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then:

“Get Lila out of that house.”

Marcus nodded.

“Where are you going?”

Bennett looked toward Manhattan.

“To attend my own charity reception.”

The Man Nobody Expected to See

The ballroom of the Hudson Crown Hotel was filled with nearly four hundred guests.

Celeste stood beneath white floral arrangements wearing a midnight-blue evening gown.

She looked completely comfortable.

Photographers captured her greeting donors.

Gavin remained near the stage, repeatedly checking his phone.

At 9:12 p.m., Celeste stepped toward the microphone.

“This past year has tested everyone connected to Cross Meridian,” she began. “But I’ve done everything possible to protect Bennett’s work, his foundation, and the future he built.”

Applause followed.

Then the ballroom doors opened.

The applause slowly faded.

Bennett Cross stood at the entrance.

For a moment, Celeste seemed unable to understand what she was seeing.

Gavin’s face lost its color.

Bennett walked through the ballroom without rushing.

People moved aside.

Celeste gripped the microphone.

“Bennett?”

He stopped several feet from the stage.

“Please continue.”

Nobody spoke.

His gaze remained fixed on her.

“You were explaining how carefully you’ve protected everything.”

Celeste forced a smile.

“You should have told me you were coming home.”

“Then I would have missed the surprise.”

Thirty-Six Million Dollars and One Missing Child

Celeste stepped away from the microphone.

“Can we discuss this privately?”

“You seemed comfortable discussing my future publicly.”

Bennett approached the stage.

“So let’s keep the same audience.”

Gavin quietly moved toward a side door.

Two members of hotel security stepped into his path.

He stopped.

Celeste’s confidence began to disappear.

“Whatever Gavin told you, I can explain.”

Bennett looked toward him.

“Interesting. I haven’t spoken to Gavin.”

She froze.

Bennett continued.

“But my auditors have.”

He removed his phone.

“Thirty-six million dollars moved through six entities over eight months. Three property purchases were placed under companies connected to you. Another transfer was scheduled for tonight.”

Celeste’s lips parted.

“Bennett, I was protecting the assets while you were away.”

“From whom?”

She had no answer.

Then Bennett asked the question that silenced the entire ballroom.

“And how exactly did sending my eight-year-old daughter away protect my assets?”

Several guests turned toward Celeste.

She shook her head.

“That’s not what happened.”

“Then tell me what happened.”

“Lila misunderstood an adult conversation.”

Bennett’s voice remained controlled.

“My daughter understood enough to lock herself behind a door and call me from across an ocean.”

Celeste glanced around the room.

“She’s not even your biological—”

Bennett’s expression stopped her.

“Don’t finish that sentence.”

The Part Celeste Never Saw Coming

Bennett’s attorney, Naomi Kessler, entered the ballroom with two financial investigators.

She approached the stage carrying a slim folder.

“Mr. Cross.”

Bennett nodded.

Naomi opened the folder.

“The scheduled transfer has been stopped. The disputed funds are secured pending review, and the relevant personal and corporate accounts have been restricted while investigators complete their work.”

Gavin immediately began speaking.

“This was Celeste’s plan. I have messages. I can show you everything.”

Celeste turned toward him.

“Gavin!”

He would not look at her.

Bennett watched quietly.

For months, Celeste had believed his absence meant weakness.

She had been wrong.

Bennett had not spent eleven months running from the investigation.

He had spent eleven months helping uncover what had happened inside his company.

Naomi lowered her voice.

“The primary allegations against you are expected to be formally withdrawn once the remaining documentation is processed.”

Bennett nodded.

Celeste stared at him.

“You knew?”

“Not everything.”
