Rachel Kennedy and Liam McCrohan, a young couple aged 19 and 21, respectively, had an incredible stroke of luck when they matched all the winning numbers in one of the UK’s biggest-ever lottery games. Their story seemed like a fairy tale in the making, but unfortunately, fate dealt them a cruel blow just when they thought they had hit the jackpot.
Rachel Kennedy and Liam McCrohan’s Missed Chance at Being Lottery Winners
Rachel, 19 years old at the time, revealed that she had been playing the same numbers in the EuroMillions lottery for five consecutive weeks. The numbers – 6, 12, 22, 29, 33, 6, and 11 – had become somewhat of a ritual for her. She faithfully purchased a ticket with these numbers every week.
Rachel had set up her lottery account to automatically purchase the same numbers, ensuring that she would never miss a draw. However, she and her boyfriend Liam’s dreams of becoming multi-millionaires were shattered when they discovered that a crucial payment had not gone through on the night of the draw when their numbers were selected.
For Excited to Heartbroken
When she checked her lottery app, Rachel could hardly believe her eyes, only to see that she had won the jackpot. The app congratulated her on her life-changing win. According to the app, she’d just won the £182 million prize (about $250 million).
“I went on the app and it said ‘Winning Match’ and I thought ‘Oh my God, I’ve won.’ So I called my boyfriend Liam and my mum into the room and they couldn’t believe it either.” she recalled.
Unbeknownst to her, there was an error with her card, and her payment had not gone through. This had rendered the ticket unpaid, making their dreams of financial freedom fade away just as quickly as they had appeared. A phone call to the lottery officials confirmed this unfortunate turn of events – because of the missed payment, they never actually owned the winning ticket.
“I called the number thinking that I had won £182 million and they said ‘Yeah you’ve got the right numbers but you didn’t have the funds in your account for the payment of the ticket,’” she explained. “I was on top of the world when I thought I had won but when I found out I hadn’t, Liam was actually more upset than I was.”
From Elated to Devastated
The sheer agony of missing out on such an astronomical sum of money can hardly be put into words. The enormity of the missed opportunity left Rachel and Liam devastated. Their hopes of starting a new life, paying off debts, and providing financial security for their loved ones vanished before their eyes.
