Dolly Parton, celebrated as a country music icon and beloved by fans worldwide, has garnered widespread recognition over decades of dedication to her craft. The Tennessee native has ascended to legendary status, continually captivating audiences with her performances and music.
While her passion for creating music remains strong, the 76-year-old legend recently announced her decision to retire from extensive touring.
In an exclusive interview with Pollstar, Dolly Parton explained her reasons for stepping back from the demanding touring schedule. She mentioned:
“There may be times when I do a special show here and there, or participate in a weekend of events, like a festival. But the desire for extensive touring has waned. At this stage in my life, I want to stay closer to home, enjoy more time with my husband, Carl Thomas Dean, and focus on songwriting.”
Dolly and Carl’s enduring love story began in 1964 when they met outside a laundromat in Nashville. Carl, then 21, was instantly drawn to the vibrant 18-year-old Dolly. In a nostalgic reflection, Carl recalled to Entertainment Tonight:
“From the first moment, I knew she was the one I would marry. It was an incredible feeling, and over the years, that feeling has only grown stronger. I wouldn’t trade our life together for anything in the world.”
Despite early career pressures to delay marriage, Dolly and Carl tied the knot in a private ceremony in Ringgold, Georgia, in May 1966, choosing a quiet life away from the public eye. Their relationship, built on mutual respect and shared experiences, remains strong. In 2016, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by renewing their vows, marking a significant milestone in their journey together.
As she steps away from the rigors of touring, Dolly Parton remains committed to her music and cherishing the moments spent with Carl. She reflects on this decision, saying:
“Touring demands so much time and energy, and at this point in my life, I want to focus on being at home with Carl. Life is unpredictable, and I don’t want to be far from home when I’m needed. The thought of canceling a tour because of unforeseen circumstances and disappointing my fans is something I want to avoid.”
