Part 2 of 3

When Preston and I bought our condo in Denver, he believed we had received a favorable mortgage through one of his business contacts.

In reality, the property had been purchased through one of my family entities and leased to us at a reduced rate.

The Range Rover was structured through the same company.

Preston had never owned either one.

He simply never looked closely enough to realize it.

For years, I told myself I would explain everything when the time was right.

But gradually I realized that Preston was revealing exactly what kind of man he became when he believed I depended on him.

So I stopped trying to correct his assumptions.

Instead, I watched.

And I prepared.

Seven People at One Appointment

While I was traveling toward Denver International Airport, Preston arrived at Bellweather Women’s Imaging Center.

Brielle was already there.

So were Preston’s parents, Randall and Colleen, his sister Marcy, Marcy’s husband, and Preston’s younger brother with his wife.

Seven members of the Hale family had gathered around Brielle’s appointment as though they were attending a celebration.

Preston walked into the room carrying a bouquet.

“How’s my boy?”

Brielle smiled nervously.

“We haven’t started yet.”

Colleen squeezed her hand.

“Everything will be perfect.”

When Dr. Nolan Reeves entered, the room became quieter.

He greeted Brielle, reviewed her file, and began the examination.

At first, Preston could barely contain himself.

He pointed at the monitor.

“Is that his head?”

Dr. Reeves nodded politely.

“That is the fetal profile.”

Randall laughed.

“Look at him. Strong Hale chin already.”

Even Marcy joined in.

“Preston, he has your nose.”

Dr. Reeves did not respond.

He adjusted the image.

Then he checked the information on Brielle’s chart.

Once.

Then again.

His expression changed.

Brielle noticed.

“Is everything okay?”

Dr. Reeves remained professional.

“From what I can see, the pregnancy itself appears to be progressing normally.”

Everyone relaxed.

But only for a moment.

The doctor looked back at the intake form.

“I do need to clarify something about the dates you provided.”

Preston frowned.

“What dates?”

Dr. Reeves turned slightly toward Brielle.

“You listed the pregnancy as approximately fourteen weeks.”

Brielle’s face lost some of its color.

“Yes.”

The doctor shook his head gently.

“The measurements are much more consistent with approximately twenty-one weeks.”

Nobody spoke.

The Seven-Week Difference

Preston blinked.

“Twenty-one?”

Dr. Reeves nodded.

“That is the approximate gestational age suggested by today’s measurements. There can be some variation, but not usually seven weeks.”

Brielle stared at the screen.

Marcy was the first person to understand what that meant.

“Wait.”

She looked at Preston.

Then at Brielle.

“You two weren’t together twenty-one weeks ago.”

Preston’s face changed.

“We were talking.”

Brielle turned quickly toward him.

“Preston, this isn’t the place.”

But Randall had already taken out his phone.

“Twenty-one weeks ago was early February.”

Colleen whispered, “Preston was in Phoenix for the trade convention almost that entire week.”

Brielle sat up slightly.

“Pregnancy dates aren’t exact.”

Dr. Reeves answered carefully.

“That’s true. Dating is an estimate. But I recommend discussing the timeline with your regular obstetric provider if there are questions.”

Preston stopped looking at the monitor.

He looked only at Brielle.

“You told me this happened after Valentine’s Day.”

She said nothing.

“Brielle.”

“I said I believed it did.”

Marcy folded her arms.

Just an hour earlier, she had stood beside me in the mediator’s office and acted as though I were an unwanted chapter of her brother’s life.

Now her voice sounded very different.

“Believed?”

The room filled with awkward silence.

Dr. Reeves stepped away politely and gave the family space.

For the first time since the pregnancy announcement, nobody was celebrating the Hale heir.

My Daughters Were Waiting

At the airport, Sophie spotted me first.

She ran toward me with her backpack bouncing against her shoulders.

“Mom!”

I crouched and hugged her.

June followed a second later.

“Are we really going today?”

“We really are.”

Their former nanny and now my personal assistant, Tessa Boone, stood beside our luggage.

She had helped me organize the move quietly over the previous two months.

My mother had relocated to England several years earlier to oversee the European investments connected to our family business.

The girls already had places reserved at an international school outside London.

We were not disappearing.

Preston had the address, travel documents, visitation schedule, and every legal detail required.

But emotionally, I was leaving something behind.

I looked at my daughters and realized I did not miss it.

Sophie slipped her hand into mine.

“Is Dad coming later?”

I chose my words carefully.

“Your dad has his own home now. We’re going to build ours.”

She nodded.

Then June looked up at me.

“Can our new home have a garden?”

I laughed softly.

“Yes. It already does.”

Her eyes widened.

That was the first moment I felt truly free.
