Part 2 of 3

“How many should we take?” Brooke asked.

“All of them,” Trevor replied. “People pay a fortune for this online.”

“What if Grant notices?”

“He’ll assume Laurel used it.”

Grant found the sales through an account linked to one of the cards he funded. Six containers had been listed, purchased, and shipped. His relatives had sold the food meant for his infant son while using the proceeds to finance their celebration.

The next video was even harder to watch. Elaine and Brooke emptied the refrigerator into large coolers while Laurel stood near the kitchen entrance.

“Please leave something I can heat easily,” Laurel asked.

“We paid for these groceries,” Elaine said.

“Grant paid for them—for Noah and me.”

Elaine closed the refrigerator with deliberate force.

“Do not challenge me in my son’s apartment.”

“It’s my home too.”

Elaine moved closer.

“You’re here because Grant feels responsible for you.”

“I’m his wife.”

“For the moment.”

Laurel’s expression changed.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“Men become tired of women who constantly complain.”

“I’m not complaining. I’m asking you to leave one container of soup.”

Elaine took the final container.

“There are noodles in the cabinet.”

Grant stopped the video and looked toward Laurel’s hospital bed. She had fallen asleep beneath several warm blankets, yet even in sleep she appeared tense, as though she expected someone to accuse her of taking up too much space.

The Papers on the Kitchen Table

A New Year’s message arrived from Elaine shortly before midnight.

“Everything is wonderful here. Laurel and the baby are doing beautifully, so don’t worry about a thing.”

The attached photograph showed Elaine, Brooke, Trevor, and several friends standing on the balcony of an expensive Florida hotel. Behind them was a table covered with the groceries removed from Grant’s apartment. A blue serving bowl that had belonged to Laurel’s grandmother sat in the center.

Grant saved the photograph and called his attorney, Stephen Mercer.

“My wife is in the hospital,” Grant explained. “My relatives used money meant for her care, removed her medication, sold my son’s formula, and left them in an unheated apartment.”

“Do you have proof?”

“Security recordings, bank records, and messages.”

“Preserve the original files,” Stephen instructed. “Send copies to the secure folder I’m creating. Do not contact your relatives yet.”

While preparing the records, Grant discovered an unfamiliar payment to a private document service. He returned to the footage from the day of the transaction and found Elaine sitting at the kitchen table with a man carrying a leather portfolio.

“This draft claims the mother is emotionally unfit to provide reliable care,” the man said.

“That is correct,” Elaine answered.

“You also stated that your son supports temporary guardianship. Has he signed anything?”

“Not yet, but he will.”

The man shook his head.

“Then you cannot claim he has approved it.”

Brooke entered the room carrying Noah.

“Can we finish this? Laurel keeps asking for him.”

The man glanced toward the hallway.

“Does the child’s mother know these papers are being prepared?”

“She’s too confused to understand legal matters,” Elaine replied.

The stranger closed his portfolio.

“I will not prepare documents based on invented medical claims or approval you do not have.”

After he left, Brooke turned to her mother.

“What do we do now?”

Elaine removed another document from her purse.

“We tell Laurel it’s a hospital form and get her signature.”

“And then?”

“We take Noah to Florida. When Grant returns, we’ll say Laurel walked away and left us to care for the baby.”

Grant watched the recording twice because the first viewing seemed impossible to accept. The empty refrigerator, missing medication, canceled phone service, and constant accusations had not been separate acts of selfishness. Elaine wanted Laurel exhausted and frightened so she could later present that condition as evidence that the young mother was incapable.

Grant immediately sent the footage to Stephen, who contacted hospital staff and law enforcement. Two officers and a social worker arrived soon afterward.

During their interview, Laurel revealed that Elaine had taken her apartment keys before leaving. Although Laurel could open the door from inside, she could not secure the apartment again if she went out. Elaine had also removed Laurel from the family phone plan, leaving her dependent on the apartment’s wireless connection.

“You are not responsible for what they did,” the social worker told her. “You asked for help. They deliberately kept it from you.”

Laurel nodded, though it was clear that believing those words would take time.

The Knock at the Hotel Door

At twelve thirty, Elaine called again. An officer quietly asked Grant to answer and keep her talking.

“Happy New Year!” Elaine said brightly. Loud music and laughter filled the background. “How is Portland?”

“Cold,” Grant replied. “Where are you?”

“At your apartment, of course. Laurel is asleep, and I’ve been holding Noah all evening.”

“Put Laurel on the phone.”

A pause followed.

“She needs her rest.”

“Where is her medication?”

“On the bathroom counter.”

“And Noah’s formula?”

“In the nursery.”

“How much remains from the sixteen thousand dollars?”

Elaine’s voice lost its cheerfulness.
