She rented a small room and took whatever work she could find.
For months, she had supported herself while preparing to become a mother.
And I had been living comfortably, believing she had abandoned us.
“I’m sorry,” I told her.
She lowered her eyes.
“I don’t need an apology right now. I just need my baby to be safe.”
Suddenly, she pressed a hand against her stomach and leaned against the wall.
“Natalie, are you all right?”
“I’m dizzy. I think I’ve been standing too long.”
I helped her sit and arranged transportation to a private hospital in Charlotte.
The doctor found that Natalie was dehydrated, anemic, and severely exhausted.
Fortunately, her baby was doing well.
She needed rest, proper nutrition, and continued monitoring.
That evening, Natalie handed me an old backpack.
Inside were a notebook and a USB drive.
“Everything I managed to save is in there,” she said.
I held the drive in my hand.
For the first time in eight months, I had something more valuable than my son’s promises.
I had evidence.
A Phone Call That Confirmed My Fears
I contacted our corporate attorney, Caroline Foster, and asked her to arrange an independent financial audit.
I also scheduled a meeting with my physician to review my medical history.
Before doing anything else, I wanted to know exactly what had happened.
Later that evening, Blake called.
“Hey, Dad. How was dinner?”
“Fine.”
“Did you enjoy the restaurant?”
I frowned.
“Which restaurant?”
“The one where Natalie works.”
My heart began pounding.
I had never told Blake where I was eating.
“How did you know I was there?”
He ignored my question.
“Dad, Natalie has always been good at making people feel sorry for her. Whatever she told you, don’t believe it.”
“She’s carrying your child, Blake.”
There was a long silence.
“What?”
“She’s eight months pregnant.”
His voice changed.
“Where is she now?”
“She’s receiving medical care.”
“Which hospital?”
I didn’t answer.
Blake sounded increasingly irritated.
“Dad, you need to stay out of this. Natalie is going to cause problems for both of us.”
Then he added something I would never forget.
“And you should be thinking about your retirement instead of getting involved in my marriage.”
After the call ended, I understood that protecting Natalie would require more than simply confronting my son.
The Truth Hidden in the Company’s Records
Over the following week, Caroline worked with an independent auditor named Allison Pierce.
They examined the financial records Natalie had saved.
The findings were disturbing.
Three questionable vendors had received approximately $1.2 million from our company.
Two had connections to Sabrina’s relatives.
The third had received payments authorized through accounts controlled by Blake.
The auditors also discovered that financial approvals had been altered and that access credentials belonging to two former employees had been used improperly.
Those employees had been blamed for transactions they apparently never authorized.
Then Caroline found something else.
Blake and Sabrina had prepared a presentation for the board.
Its title was Leadership Transition and Executive Capacity Review.
The presentation included selected examples of my recent health concerns, altered meeting records, and misleading descriptions of my performance.
Attached was a purported medical assessment that my physician had never issued.
“Richard, this is not a legitimate medical evaluation,” Caroline explained. “Your son appears to have been creating a misleading case for removing you from leadership.”
She also uncovered documents related to a three-million-dollar life insurance policy.
Blake had been seeking information about its beneficiary provisions and exploring whether company ownership arrangements could be changed.
Those documents did not prove every intention behind his actions, but they raised serious concerns about his plans.
I felt sick.
I had spent my life preparing Blake to lead.
He had spent months preparing to push me aside.
The Conversation That Changed Everything
I asked Blake to meet me privately at the office.
He arrived wearing an expensive navy suit, carrying the confidence of someone who believed he already controlled the room.
“Dad, I’m glad you called. We need to discuss your future.”
“My future?”
“You’ve been struggling lately. The board is concerned.”
I folded my hands.
“Which board members?”
He hesitated.
“Several people.”
“And who told them I was struggling?”
His expression tightened.
“I’m trying to help you.”
I placed a copy of the leadership presentation on my desk.
Blake stared at it.
“Where did you get that?”
“That’s what I’d like you to explain.”
He sat back.
“Dad, you’re getting older. Someone has to protect the company.”
“By making me look incapable?”
“You’re taking this personally.”
“It is personal, Blake. I’m your father.”
For a moment, I hoped he might apologize.
Instead, he became defensive.
“Everything you’ve built is going to be mine eventually. Why are you making this so difficult?”
Those words hurt more than I expected.
“Because a company isn’t something you deserve simply because you share my last name.”
He stood.
“Natalie put you up to this.”
“Natalie showed me the truth.”
“You’re choosing her over your own son?”
I looked at the man standing across from me.
“I’m choosing to stop ignoring what you’ve done.”
The Day My Son Lost His Authority
With the support of the company’s independent directors, Blake’s financial authorization and executive access were suspended while the investigation continued.
The questionable transactions were reported to the appropriate authorities.
