The Phone Call I Was Never Supposed to Hear

The gift bag slipped from my hand the moment I heard my husband’s voice through the half-open study door.

“Don’t worry. She still has no idea.”

I froze in the hallway.

The silver ribbon around the anniversary gift brushed against my shoe as I stood there, barely breathing.

Matthew laughed quietly.

“I’ve been setting her up since high school. I kept the secret this whole time. The plan’s almost finished.”

I couldn’t hear the person on the other end.

Only him.

Only those words.

Setting me up.

Since high school.

Five years of marriage.

Nearly twenty years of knowing each other.

My hand tightened around the paper gift bag until it crumpled.

I had left work early because I wanted to surprise him. Inside the bag was the vintage fountain pen he’d admired at an antique bookstore months earlier. I’d even asked the owner to engrave his initials.

Now it suddenly felt ridiculous.

Matthew ended the call and walked toward the kitchen.

I grabbed the bag and quietly stepped back outside before he could see me.

Thirty seconds later, I rang the front doorbell like I had just arrived.

He answered with the same warm smile I’d fallen in love with years ago.

“Ash? You’re home early.”

I forced myself to smile.

“Traffic wasn’t bad.”

He kissed my forehead.

“Perfect timing. Dinner’s almost ready.”

I looked into his eyes, searching for something unfamiliar.

I found nothing.

The Boy Who Always Believed in Me

Matthew and I had grown up next door to each other in a quiet neighborhood outside Columbus, Ohio.

When another fourth grader laughed at my oversized glasses, Matthew shoved him onto the playground mulch and spent recess in the principal’s office.

When I was too scared to audition for the middle-school choir, he waited outside the music room until I walked in.

When I wanted to quit algebra after my first failed test, he sat beside me every Saturday morning until I finally understood it.

Everyone used to joke that Matthew believed in me more than I believed in myself.

They weren’t wrong.

I hesitated over everything.

I almost joined student government.

Almost studied journalism.

Almost applied for scholarships.

Almost sent my writing to magazines.

Almost became the person I wanted to be.

Matthew never called me weak.

He simply waited beside me.

Or so I thought.

That night, as we ate dinner together, I couldn’t stop hearing his voice.

“I’ve been setting her up since high school.”

Every memory suddenly carried a question mark.

One Email Changed Everything

The next morning, I called in sick.

Matthew kissed me goodbye before leaving for work.

“Get some rest.”

I watched his car disappear down the street.

Then I walked straight into his home office.

I wasn’t looking for proof that he was cheating.

I was looking for proof that I hadn’t imagined the phone call.

His laptop sat on the desk.

Locked.

I almost gave up.

Then I remembered the password he’d jokingly told me years earlier.

“Don’t ever forget this,” he’d laughed. “It’s impossible.”

Our childhood street number.

The screen unlocked.

My stomach dropped.

There weren’t secret dating apps.

No hidden bank accounts.

No messages from another woman.

Instead, I found folders with my name.

Dozens of them.

Ashley.

Ashley Writing.

Ashley Grad School.

Ashley Scholarships.

Ashley Career.

Each folder contained documents stretching back more than fifteen years.

At first I couldn’t understand what I was looking at.

Then I opened one file.

It was my college scholarship application.

I remembered filling it out.

I also remembered losing confidence and never submitting it.

Except…

There was a confirmation receipt.

Submitted.

Three minutes before the deadline.

Under my name.

I opened another folder.

A graduate school application.

Another confirmation.

Submitted.

Another.

A writers’ conference.

Submitted.

Another.

My first novel proposal.

Submitted.

Every single opportunity I believed I had finally been brave enough to pursue…

The Pattern I Couldn’t Ignore

I spent the next two hours opening document after document.

Every folder followed the same pattern.

Half-finished application.

Then…

Final version.

Submission confirmation.

Acceptance email.

Sometimes Matthew had even edited obvious spelling mistakes.

Sometimes he’d reformatted documents.

Sometimes he’d uploaded attachments I had forgotten to include.

Never enough to change my work.

Just enough to make sure it crossed the finish line.

I leaned back in his office chair and stared at the wall.

The framed photo from our wedding sat on the bookshelf.
