I Thought Seeing Him Again Was the Biggest Shock… Until a DNA Test Revealed the Truth About My Babies’ Father

Part 2 of 3

I almost said no.

Instead, I nodded.

He remained near the doorway.

“They’re beautiful.”

I frowned.

“You saw them?”

“I checked on them after surgery.”

Silence filled the room.

Finally, I asked the question that had been sitting between us.

“Why did you believe those photographs?”

Graham looked down.

“Because I was angry, proud, and stupid.”

That wasn’t the answer I expected.

He continued.

“My mother brought them to me. She said she’d hired someone because she thought you were using me. I believed her.”

“And the embryos?”

His head lifted sharply.

“What about them?”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“I received documents saying they were destroyed.”

Graham stared at me.

“Mara, I received documents saying you transferred them.”

Neither of us spoke.

For the first time that night, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.

The Question That Changed Everything

The following morning, Graham returned with an attorney from the hospital and Dr. Celia Monroe, director of reproductive medicine.

Dr. Monroe placed a folder on the table.

“Ms. Ellison, we discovered an irregularity connected to your old fertility records.”

I felt my stomach twist.

She explained that after Graham and I separated, the embryos we had created were not destroyed.

They had been moved.

Authorization documents existed.

But there were inconsistencies in the signatures and dates.

I shook my head.

“That has nothing to do with my pregnancy.”

Dr. Monroe didn’t answer immediately.

That silence frightened me more than any words could have.

My pregnancy had happened after I entered a relationship with Preston Vale, a man I met two years after Graham.

At first, Preston had seemed attentive and protective.

Over time, protection became control.

He managed appointments.

He handled insurance paperwork.

When we decided to try for a child, he arranged everything through a private clinic.

He told me we were using embryos created from our own genetic material.

I believed him.

When I became pregnant with twins, Preston called it a miracle.

Three months later, our relationship collapsed after I discovered financial decisions he had made in my name.

I left.

He never tried very hard to come after me.

Now I understood why that might have been.

Dr. Monroe looked at Graham, then back at me.

“We believe further testing would clarify what happened.”

I stared at her.

“What are you saying?”

Graham had gone pale.

Dr. Monroe chose her words carefully.

“There is a possibility that the embryos used in your pregnancy were not the embryos you believed they were.”

The Test

I refused to believe it at first.

It sounded impossible.

But the hospital’s legal department began examining records.

Within forty-eight hours, investigators discovered that Preston had once worked as a financial consultant for a company connected to Whitmore Biomedical.

More importantly, he had known Lenora Whitmore.

The connection went back years.

Then came another discovery.

The clinic that had handled my fertility treatment with Preston had received two preserved embryos from an intermediary storage facility shortly before my procedure.

Those embryos carried identification numbers.

Numbers matching the embryos Graham and I had created five years earlier.

My hands shook when I read the report.

“No.”

Graham sat across from me.

“We still need genetic confirmation.”

I looked toward the neonatal unit beyond the glass.

Lila was sleeping beneath a pale blanket.

Noah’s tiny hand rested beside his face.

I whispered, “You might be their father.”

Graham didn’t answer.

He simply stared at the babies.

The Truth About Lenora

The DNA results arrived three days later.

Graham asked me whether I wanted to read them alone.

I didn’t.

Dr. Monroe opened the envelope.

The results confirmed maternity first.

I was Lila and Noah’s biological mother.

Then she read the second finding.

Graham Whitmore was their biological father.

Probability of paternity: greater than 99.9 percent.

Graham sat completely still.

I couldn’t move either.

Five years of separation.

Five years of anger.

Five years believing our future had been erased.

And somehow, sleeping only a few rooms away, were the two children we had once imagined having together.

But the truth brought another question.

Who had done this?

The investigation eventually pointed toward Lenora.

Records showed that she had interfered with the original storage arrangements. Communications linked her representatives to the company that transferred the embryos.

The false evidence that ended my relationship with Graham also appeared to have originated from people connected to her.
