I Was Six Months Pregnant With IVF Triplets When I Overheard My Husband Brag That He’d Had Embryos From Three Other Women Transferred Into My Womb—and Laugh That My Only Role Was to Carry Them; Then He Brought a Consent Form to My Hospital Bed, Bearing My Signature and a Date From Before We Had Even Met…

Part 2 of 3

Beneath my name on the first page was a signature that looked almost like mine.

The date below it was from two months before Peter and I had ever walked into the clinic.

A Signature From Before We Met

Rachel called an attorney, Naomi Blake, who worked with family and reproductive-law cases. Naomi came to the hospital that afternoon. She read the paper carefully, then placed it in a protective sleeve.

“Don’t sign anything else, and don’t send this document back to the clinic yet,” she said. “We need to preserve what you were given and find out where it came from.”

I stared at the signature.

“I didn’t sign it.”

“Then we’ll establish that.”

Naomi asked about the date. I remembered that Peter and I had been in Portland, Maine, for a family wedding that weekend. Rachel had photographs. My credit-card statement would show the hotel. The wedding program listed both our names.

Naomi wrote down each detail, then asked me about the doctor who had overseen the treatment, Dr. Alan Whitaker.

“Peter chose him,” I said. “He told me Dr. Whitaker had a strong record with high-risk pregnancies.”

“Did you ever meet with him alone?”

“No.”

“Did he explain the embryo transfer himself?”

“Peter was always there.”

Naomi asked the clinic to preserve all records connected to my care. She also told the hospital not to let Peter access my chart or make medical decisions for me. I was frightened by how necessary that had become, but the boundary brought a small measure of relief.

The first batch of records arrived the following morning. Most pages looked ordinary: medication logs, appointment notes, billing statements, and ultrasound reports. Then Naomi opened the embryology section.

Three embryo numbers had been blacked out under the explanation “confidential third-party information.” The transfer note described me as a gestational carrier. Another page showed an electronic consent attached to an email address I had never used.

I shook my head.

“That isn’t my account.”

Naomi enlarged the record. The electronic profile had been created from a device registered to Peter’s office. A later entry showed that the user name attached to the account had been changed, and the original access information had been erased from the active file.

The clinic’s compliance director, Martin Cole, came to the hospital with the records coordinator. After Naomi insisted that every version of the file be preserved, he admitted that older laboratory notes had been moved out of the active record. One of them described my treatment plainly: the embryos had been created from my eggs and Peter’s sperm, according to the plan I had requested.

The later file told a different story. It relabeled the embryos with letters tied to three families and described them as third-party embryos.

“Who changed those labels?” Naomi asked.

Martin said the clinic was investigating.

“And why was the original note removed?”

He had no answer.

The records coordinator, Mara, seemed troubled. She explained that on the morning of my transfer, Dr. Whitaker had told her the paperwork had been handled privately between the “intended parents.” She had asked whether I had signed a third-party consent. He said I had signed everything. Mara had never seen the document herself, and she had not stopped the procedure.

“I should have asked you,” she said quietly.

“You should have,” I replied. “But you didn’t create this.”

Naomi found another troubling inconsistency in a contract naming Audrey Miller’s family. Audrey had passed away years earlier, yet the agreement was dated long after that. Her parents, Ellen and George, joined a video call with Naomi that evening. Peter had told them he used Audrey’s frozen eggs and that I had volunteered to carry the resulting child.

They had believed him. He had even sent them one of my ultrasound images, writing Audrey’s name on the back.

Ellen’s voice trembled as she spoke.

“He told us our daughter’s final wish was to have a child. We wanted to believe we could help make that happen.”

I could barely answer.

“He used my pregnancy to make you believe that.”

“We’re so sorry,” Ellen said.

They had kept every document Peter gave them. One laboratory notice showed that Audrey’s stored material had never been used. The agreement bearing her name was a lie.

The clinic also found records for three additional embryos created from my eggs and Peter’s sperm. They were marked as disposed of, but the physical storage inventory could not confirm that they had been destroyed. The last transfer request associated with them had been submitted under a name no one recognized.

That night my contractions grew closer together. The doctors monitored me, gave me medication to try to delay labor, and explained that the babies might need intensive care if they arrived early. Peter’s attorney filed an emergency petition, claiming I had agreed to carry the babies for three separate families and should not make decisions about them without notice.

The petition described me as confused and emotionally unstable. It didn’t mention the original laboratory notes, the changed files, or the impossible dates.

I could not read another page.

“He’s trying to make it sound as if I don’t know my own life,” I said.

“Then we keep the record factual,” Naomi replied. “We don’t let him pull you into a fight that belongs in evidence.”

Soon afterward, a woman named Harper called Naomi. Peter had told her one embryo came from her genetic material and that she would receive a child after I gave birth. He had also asked her for money, calling it legal and administrative expenses.

Harper had received a notice from the clinic stating that an embryo connected to her had been transferred under my name.

“I never wanted to take a baby from another woman,” she told me, her voice breaking.

“Neither of us caused this,” I said.
