In pictures: Princess Anne in her younger years as she celebrates 75th birthday

From schooldays to rising royal role

Born on August 15, 1950, Princess Anne entered the world as the second child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. At the time she was third in line to the throne, though in 2025 she now stands 18th.

Despite that shift in succession, Anne has carved out a place as one of the monarchy’s most respected figures. Known for her modesty and hard work, she has earned a reputation as the no-nonsense royal who shoulders duty without fuss.

One photograph from 1967 captures her at 17, dressed with striking confidence in a matching hat, scarf, and dress while still at Benenden School in Kent. Two years later, she was photographed smiling on a ski trip in Val-d’Isère, France — a glimpse of her lifelong passion for sport and the outdoors.

Equestrian achievements and Olympic history

By the early 1970s, Anne had established herself as a serious equestrian. In 1971, her sporting achievements were recognized when she was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year. That reputation culminated in her competing at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, making her the first royal Olympian.

The same decade saw her life in the spotlight for another reason: her wedding to Mark Phillips. The couple married at Westminster Abbey in November 1973, in a ceremony watched by an estimated 100 million television viewers worldwide. They went on to have two children, Peter and Zara, before separating in 1989 and divorcing in 1992.

A steady presence through decades of service

Later that same year, Anne remarried to Commander Tim Laurence, who had served as equerry to the late Queen Elizabeth II. Together, they have kept a relatively private home life, while Anne’s public role has only grown.

From teenage royal in bold fashion to Olympian and respected elder stateswoman of the family, Princess Anne’s 75 years tell the story of consistency, resilience, and quiet authority — qualities that ensure she remains one of Britain’s most admired royals.
