Part 2 of 3

I told myself there might still be another explanation.

Deep down, I already knew better.

Three days passed without anything unusual.

Then, on Thursday afternoon, my phone vibrated while I was eating lunch at work.

Motion detected.

I opened the security application.

Grant entered our bedroom.

The blonde woman from the grocery store followed him.

Her name, I would later discover, was Lila Monroe.

She moved through my bedroom like someone who had been there many times before.

She opened drawers.

She used my bathroom.

At one point, she even picked up one of my robes.

I closed the application.

I didn’t need to watch anything else.

The betrayal itself hurt, but another thought kept bothering me.

Why had Grant been spending so much time in his office whenever Lila visited?

Two days later, I learned why.

The Conversation I Wasn’t Supposed to Hear

Saturday morning, Miles and I were at a neighborhood park when another camera alert appeared.

This time, it came from Grant’s office.

I opened the live feed.

Grant was sitting at his desk with financial documents spread in front of him.

Then he made a phone call.

“Yes, Brent, everything is signed.”

I turned up the audio.

“Emily approved the second equity loan. Her signature is on every document.”

My breath caught.

I had never approved another loan against our house.

Grant continued.

“Transfer the full amount to Monroe Creative Holdings. One hundred and forty-eight thousand. Yes, today if possible.”

I stared at the screen.

Monroe.

Lila Monroe.

I immediately checked my credit profile.

There it was.

A new home-equity obligation had been opened using my information.

Nearly $150,000.

My hands began shaking.

The house had originally been mine.

Years before meeting Grant, I had worked double shifts and saved nearly every dollar I could to buy it.

Now he was using the equity I had built to finance something connected to another woman.

I continued searching.

What I found next made everything worse.

Money had also disappeared from the savings account we had created for Miles.

Not all of it.

But enough.

This was no longer only about a marriage.

It was about my son’s future.

Grant texted me while I was sitting on the park bench.

“Making pasta tonight. Love you and Miles. Come home hungry.”

I read the message twice.

Then I called an attorney.

Her name was Dana Whitcomb.

She specialized in financial disputes and complex divorce cases.

After listening to what I had recorded, she became very quiet.

Finally she said:

“Emily, don’t confront him yet.”

“Why?”

“Because right now he thinks you know nothing. That’s your advantage.”

The Most Difficult Two Weeks of My Life

Pretending everything was normal became exhausting.

Every morning, Grant kissed me goodbye.

Every evening, I sat across from him at dinner.

Sometimes he talked about retirement.

Sometimes he discussed family vacations.

Once, he told Miles:

“Everything Daddy does is for you.”

I had to leave the room.

Meanwhile, Dana and her financial team began documenting everything.

They traced transfers, reviewed account records, and preserved copies of the documents carrying my falsified signature.

The money had gone into a company connected to Lila.

She was preparing to open an upscale fashion boutique downtown.

According to Grant’s private messages, he had promised her that once the business succeeded, they would begin a new life together.

Apparently, I was supposed to discover all of this only after the house was heavily leveraged and much of our savings had disappeared.

Grant underestimated one thing.

Our five-year-old had noticed the visitor he thought nobody knew about.

Grant’s Fortieth Birthday

Grant had been planning his fortieth birthday celebration for months.

He invited relatives, neighbors, old college friends, and several senior people from his firm.

Nearly forty guests filled our home that Saturday night.

Grant wore a dark blue blazer and spent most of the evening laughing with colleagues.

To everyone watching, we looked like a successful couple celebrating a milestone.

I smiled.

I served drinks.

I hugged his mother.

I even brought out his birthday cake.

At around eight thirty, I tapped a spoon against my glass.

Everyone became quiet.

“Before we cut the cake, I have something special for Grant.”

He smiled broadly.

“You didn’t have to do anything, Em.”

“I wanted everyone to see what you’ve been working on.”

That sentence made him look proud.

I connected my laptop to the television.

The first video began.

Grant appeared on screen entering our bedroom with Lila.

The room became silent.

His smile disappeared instantly.
