Part 1 of 3

My Husband Forgot to End the Call—What I Heard Changed Our Anniversary

My husband forgot to end our call, and I heard him tell another woman, “Of course I don’t love her anymore. Just wait until after the anniversary. Then I’ll leave.”

I was standing in our kitchen with our six-week-old daughter in my arms.

I did not confront him.

Instead, I invited both of our families to our anniversary dinner and saved everything I had heard.

But two days before that dinner, I found Caleb’s old tablet in the bottom drawer of his desk.

What I discovered there made me realize something far worse.

I was not the only woman my husband had been lying to.

The Call That Was Supposed to Last Thirty Seconds

It happened on a Thursday afternoon at 5:26.

Our daughter, Harper, had finally fallen asleep in the bassinet beside the kitchen table. I was warming a bottle and trying to decide whether to make enough dinner for two people.

So I called my husband.

“Are you coming home for dinner?”

Caleb sighed as though I had interrupted something important.

“I don’t know, Madison. I’m still at work.”

“I’m only asking because I’m about to start dinner.”

There was another sigh.

“You’ve been asking where I am constantly lately.”

I stared at the saucepan in front of me.

That was not true.

Since Harper had been born, my days had become a blur of bottles, laundry, feeding schedules, pediatric appointments, and interrupted sleep.

Half the time, I could barely remember where I had put my own phone.

“Okay,” I said quietly. “I love you.”

Caleb did not answer.

The line went silent.

I moved my thumb toward the screen to hang up.

Then I noticed the call timer was still moving.

00:48.

00:49.

00:50.

A woman laughed somewhere near him.

I froze.

Caleb spoke again, but his voice had changed.

The irritation was gone.

Now he sounded relaxed.

Warm, even.

“She’s been impossible since the baby came.”

The woman replied, but I could not make out her words.

Caleb laughed.

“She sends me pictures all day and keeps asking when I’m coming home.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

Then the woman asked him something else.

This time, I heard Caleb’s answer clearly.

“Of course I don’t love her anymore.”

I stopped breathing for a moment.

Then he continued.

“Just give me a little more time. We’ll get through the anniversary with both families, and after that I’ll end it.”

There was a pause.

Then he said:

“Yes. After that, we can finally be together.”

I ended the call.

I Wanted to Confront Him, but Then Harper Woke Up

For several seconds, I stood in the kitchen without moving.

I imagined calling Caleb back.

I imagined demanding to know who she was.

I imagined telling him not to bother coming home.

Then Harper began to fuss.

That tiny sound brought me back to the room.

I picked her up and carried her to the rocking chair.

She was only six weeks old. Her dark hair curled slightly near her ears, and when I gave her the bottle, one tiny hand wrapped around my finger.

I looked down at her.

Everything changed in that moment.

I was hurt, but I could not afford to react only from hurt.

I was not making decisions for myself anymore.

There was a child involved.

Before I confronted Caleb, I needed to understand what was actually happening.

That evening, he arrived almost three hours later carrying a bouquet of grocery-store lilies.

My favorite flowers were tulips.

Apparently, after nearly three years of marriage, he had forgotten.

“For my favorite girl,” he said.

He kissed my forehead.

“They’re beautiful,” I answered.

He watched me carefully.

I think he expected questions about why he was late.

I asked none.

That night, he slept with his phone tucked beside him.

The next morning, he carried it into the bathroom.

By Friday afternoon, his passcode had changed.

And strangely, the less suspicious I acted, the more careless he became.

I Changed Our Anniversary Plans

Our third wedding anniversary was Sunday.

Originally, Caleb and I were supposed to have dinner alone at a restaurant in downtown Franklin.

I canceled the reservation.

Instead, I invited my parents.

Then I invited Caleb’s parents.

I invited my older brother and his wife as well.

When I told Caleb, he smiled.

“Actually, I love that idea. Everyone together.”

“I thought it would be nice,” I said.

He leaned over and kissed my cheek.

He thought the anniversary was still his deadline.

He thought he controlled what happened next.

He had no idea that I had already heard the plan.

Then I Found His Old Tablet

Friday afternoon, Harper was sleeping when I went into our home office looking for an insurance document.

I opened the bottom drawer of Caleb’s desk.

Under several folders was an old tablet.

Caleb had not used it in more than a year.
