The Next Afternoon, My Husband Returned to the Mansion and Found an Attorney at the Gate Holding Documents That Made His Girlfriend Turn to Him and Whisper, “You Told Me This House Was Yours”

Part 2 of 3

After Maisie was fed and resting safely, Audrey opened the laptop she had carried out of the house.

The screen came alive with a familiar logo.

VANCE CREST PARTNERS.

Audrey had founded the investment firm twelve years earlier, long before she met Derek.

What began as a modest property investment company had grown into a private group involved in commercial real estate, sustainable housing, construction financing, and property management across several states.

Audrey owned seventy-one percent.

Her older cousin, Nolan Vance, served as chief executive and handled most public appearances.

Audrey preferred working behind the scenes.

After marrying Derek, she had stepped even further away from public attention.

Derek knew that Audrey’s family had been comfortable financially, but he had never bothered to understand the company.

He assumed Nolan owned nearly everything.

Audrey never corrected him.

Before the wedding, she and Derek had signed a detailed agreement keeping their premarital assets separate.

Derek had signed without hesitation because he believed Audrey owned little more than some family savings and a modest investment portfolio.

Then, over the years, companies controlled by Vance Crest quietly became deeply connected to Derek’s success.

A subsidiary purchased the Brookhaven house and allowed Audrey and Derek to live there.

Another corporate affiliate leased the luxury SUV Derek proudly called “his.”

And when Derek’s small development firm needed opportunities, Vance Crest awarded it several construction contracts.

Those contracts changed Derek’s career.

His company grew.

His reputation improved.

He gained wealthy clients.

He started buying expensive suits and telling friends that years of brilliant business decisions had finally paid off.

Audrey never asked for credit.

At first, she had admired his ambition.

Then ambition became entitlement.

Derek began speaking about Audrey as though she were lucky to have him.

When she became pregnant, his attitude became worse.

And when they learned the baby was a girl, Marjorie’s disappointment had been immediate.

“Well,” she had said, “perhaps the next one will carry on the family properly.”

Audrey had looked at Derek, expecting him to defend his unborn child.

Instead, he had smiled awkwardly and said, “We can always try again.”

Audrey should have understood then.

But she wanted to believe fatherhood might change him.

Five days after Maisie’s birth, she finally accepted that it had not.

The Audit That Changed the Entire Story

The next morning, Audrey entered the headquarters of Vance Crest Partners with Maisie sleeping in her carrier.

She wore a simple navy wrap dress and flat shoes. Her body was still recovering, so the caregiver stayed close beside her.

Several longtime employees stood when they recognized her.

Nolan met her near the elevators.

His expression changed when he saw how tired she looked.

“You should be home resting.”

Audrey gave him a faint smile.

“I spent years resting from my own life. I’m done with that.”

Inside the executive conference room, Gavin placed several folders across the table.

The overnight review had already uncovered problems.

Serious ones.

Gavin opened the first folder.

“Halston Ridge submitted invoices that do not match subcontractor records.”

Audrey remained silent.

He opened another.

“Several material substitutions were approved without disclosure. The contracted price remained the same even though the replacement materials cost substantially less.”

Nolan leaned forward.

“Where did the difference go?”

Gavin placed bank records on the table.

“Some of it moved through consulting payments. Two accounts are connected to Sabrina Keene.”

Audrey stared at the documents.

The personal betrayal hurt.

But this was no longer only about her marriage.

These were housing and commercial projects funded by people who trusted Vance Crest to oversee them responsibly.

“How much is questionable?” Audrey asked.

Gavin paused.

“A little over $1.8 million so far. The number may increase.”

Audrey looked down at Maisie.

Her daughter slept peacefully, unaware of the conversation happening around her.

Audrey inhaled slowly.

“Suspend all outstanding payments to Derek’s company.”

Nolan nodded.

“All projects?”

“Every one connected to questionable records.”

She turned toward Gavin.

“Preserve all documents, notify the relevant financial institutions, and send the findings to outside counsel for an independent review.”

“What about Derek personally?”

Audrey looked toward the windows overlooking Richmond.

“I don’t want a spectacle. I want documentation. Whatever happens next should happen because of facts, not because I’m angry.”

By Noon, Everything He Claimed Was His Began Disappearing

At 11:47 that morning, Derek tried to pay for an expensive gift for Sabrina.

The card was declined.

He tried another.

Declined again.

Less than an hour later, the leasing company contacted him about the vehicle.

By early afternoon, Derek, Sabrina, and Marjorie returned to the Brookhaven house after running errands.

Waiting outside were Gavin, a representative of the property-management company, and two security staff members.

Derek approached them angrily.

“Why are you standing outside my house?”

Gavin held a certified document.

“Because your permission to occupy this property has been withdrawn.”

Derek laughed.

“That’s ridiculous. My wife cannot throw me out of my own home.”

“It is not your home.”

Derek’s expression changed.

Gavin continued.

“The Brookhaven property is owned by Briar Residential Assets, which is controlled by Vance Crest Partners.”

Marjorie stepped forward.

“Audrey doesn’t own Vance Crest.”

Gavin looked at her calmly.

“Audrey Vance is the company’s founder and majority shareholder.”

No one spoke.

Sabrina slowly turned toward Derek.

“You said this house was yours.”

“It is.”

Gavin shook his head.

“Your name has never appeared on the deed.”

Marjorie looked genuinely confused now.

“But Derek paid for everything.”

“A substantial portion of Mr. Halston’s business growth was financed through contracts awarded by companies controlled by Mrs. Vance.”

Derek’s phone began ringing.

First a subcontractor.

Then his accountant.

Then a business partner.

Within minutes, he learned that several major contracts had been suspended pending review.

The confidence drained from his face.

Sabrina stared at him.

“What did you do?”

“Nothing. Audrey is trying to punish me.”

Gavin turned toward Sabrina.

“You may also receive questions regarding consulting payments made into accounts associated with your name.”

Sabrina’s expression changed immediately.

She removed the designer watch Derek had given her and placed it on top of a nearby stone column.

“You told me you built all of this yourself.”

Then she walked toward the street.

Derek called after her.

She never turned around.
