Part 2 of 3

“Don’t answer.”

Instead, he enabled automatic backup for every voicemail.

Nathan left the first message an hour later.

“Emily, stop acting crazy. Come home and let’s talk.”

The second sounded irritated.

“You’re embarrassing both of us.”

The third was different.

“If you tell anyone I hit you, you’ll regret it.”

Michael didn’t even look surprised.

He saved every recording.

“He just helped us.”

That afternoon my father visited.

He sat beside my hospital bed with a paper bag from my favorite bakery.

Just like he had when I broke my wrist at fourteen.

He placed the bag on the table.

Neither of us reached for it.

Finally he asked,

“Did you know about the affair?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

He nodded slowly.

Then he reached into his coat pocket and handed me a small velvet jewelry box.

I frowned.

“What’s this?”

“Your mother kept a second pair of pearl earrings. Your grandmother bought two identical sets years ago.”

I opened the box.

The pearls looked almost exactly the same.

My throat tightened.

Dad smiled faintly.

“Those belong to you now.”

I closed the lid carefully.

For the first time since the night before, I stopped thinking about the earrings Madison had taken.

They weren’t what I had really lost.

Or what I needed back.

The Neighbor’s Security Camera Recorded the One Thing Nathan Thought Nobody Saw

Late that afternoon Michael received a phone call.

He listened without speaking.

Then he covered the receiver.

“The neighbor agreed to preserve the camera footage before it’s overwritten.”

I sat up.

“Did it record everything?”

“It recorded you being pushed out of the house into the rain.”

Silence filled the room.

Michael uncovered the phone again.

“Yes,” he said. “Please save the original file. We’ll arrange collection today.”

After he hung up, he looked at me.

“That’s the first independent evidence.”

Nathan still believed this was just another argument that he could smooth over with excuses.

He had no idea someone else’s camera had quietly watched the entire ending.

That evening, while I was preparing to leave the hospital, my phone buzzed again.

This time it wasn’t Nathan.

It was Madison.

One text.

“I didn’t know he would hit you.”

I stared at the screen.

A second message arrived.

“Can we talk?”

I handed the phone to Michael.

He read both messages.

Then locked the screen without replying.

“Not yet.”

Outside, the rain had finally stopped.

The sidewalks were still wet, reflecting the lights from the hospital entrance.

My father walked beside me without saying much.

As we reached his car, I slipped my grandmother’s second pair of pearl earrings into my pocket.

The first pair had become the reason Nathan believed he could erase me from my own home.

The second pair reminded me that some things could never be taken by force.

As my father started the engine, Michael’s phone rang once more.

He listened for less than a minute before turning toward us.

For the first time all day, I saw the corner of his mouth lift.

“Nathan just transferred a large amount of money into an account under Madison Reed’s name.”

He closed his notebook.

“He thinks he’s hiding assets.”

I looked through the windshield at the dark road ahead.

For the first time since being thrown into the rain, I wasn’t wondering how I would survive.

I was wondering how much of Nathan’s life had been built on the assumption that no one would ever bother to look closely.

The Neighbor’s Security Camera Recorded the One Thing Nathan Thought Nobody Saw

I spent the next morning at Michael Foster’s office instead of going home.

Home didn’t feel like mine anymore.

Michael placed a flash drive on the conference table.

“The neighbor gave us the original security footage.”

He connected it to his laptop.

The video wasn’t dramatic.

It showed my front porch through a wide-angle camera.

Nathan opened the door.

A second later, he shoved my purse outside.

Then I stumbled onto the porch.

He pushed me one more time before slamming the door in my face.

The timestamp matched the hospital records almost exactly.

Michael paused the video.

“This alone supports the protective order.”

Before I could answer, his assistant knocked softly.

“Nathan Brooks is here. He wants to speak with Emily.”

Michael looked at me.

“Your decision.”

I thought for a moment.

“I’ll see him.”

Nathan walked in wearing a tailored navy suit.

If someone had seen him on the street, they would have assumed he was headed to an investor meeting instead of a lawyer’s office.

He sat down without looking at the screen showing the security footage.

“Emily, this has gone far enough.”

I didn’t answer.

He leaned forward.

“We had an argument. Couples fight. Don’t destroy both our lives over one bad night.”

Michael slid a copy of the hospital report across the table.

Nathan barely glanced at it.

“You bruise easily.”

Then Michael pressed one key.

The security video began playing.

Nathan watched himself shove me into the rain.

For the first time since I’d met him, he didn’t know what to say.

He stood up.

“That doesn’t show everything.”
