Diane looked directly at me.

“Come on, Mallory. You know we’re only teasing.”

I placed my napkin beside my plate.

“I know exactly what you’re doing.”

Her smile weakened.

Ethan leaned toward me.

“Don’t make a scene.”

I looked at him.

“I’m sitting quietly.”

“Then keep doing that.”

I would remember those words later.

The Doors Opened

Before Diane could continue, the ballroom doors opened.

Several officers immediately stood.

Ethan straightened.

A senior officer entered with two staff members walking behind him.

Rear Admiral Charles Pembroke.

Ethan had spoken about him for weeks.

Pembroke was involved in a joint command initiative that Ethan desperately wanted to join after his promotion.

Ethan quickly stepped away from our table.

His expression transformed into the polished smile he used around senior leadership.

“Admiral, sir. I wasn’t expecting you tonight.”

Pembroke shook his hand.

“Congratulations, Major.”

Ethan practically glowed.

“Thank you, sir.”

Then Pembroke looked past him.

His eyes found me.

The smile disappeared from his face and was replaced by professional recognition.

He walked around Ethan.

Then he stopped directly in front of me.

I stood.

The admiral came to attention.

His hand rose.

He saluted.

I returned it.

“Commander Keene.”

Nobody spoke.

Ethan stared at me.

Diane’s glass remained suspended near her mouth.

Pembroke lowered his hand.

“I apologize for interrupting your evening, Commander. We have a development requiring your attention.”

I nodded.

“Understood, sir.”

Behind him, Ethan finally found his voice.

“Commander?”

I turned toward him.

His face looked completely different now.

“Keene?”

“My maiden name.”

“You’re a commander?”

I didn’t answer immediately.

Pembroke did.

“Major Rourke, your wife has served in several joint security assignments.”

Ethan looked as though he had stopped understanding English.

“She told me she was a consultant.”

I finally spoke.

“No. I told you my current work involved federal security programs. You shortened it because that version was more convenient.”

Diane stood.

“Wait. You’re actually in the military?”

I looked at her.

“I previously served on active duty. My current assignment operates through a joint oversight program.”

Her face changed.

The room was completely silent.

Then Admiral Pembroke noticed Rachel.

One Look Changed Everything

The admiral’s eyes narrowed slightly.

I saw it.

So did Rachel.

Her hand immediately moved toward her bracelet.

I stepped closer to Pembroke.

“Sir, could we speak privately?”

He understood my tone.

“Certainly.”

Ethan moved toward us.

“Mallory, what is going on?”

I looked at him.

“That’s something I was hoping you could help explain.”

His face tightened.

“Explain what?”

I glanced toward Warren.

He was no longer beside the bar.

He was moving toward the hallway.

One of Pembroke’s staff members quietly repositioned himself near the door.

No shouting followed.

No one rushed across the room.

But everyone who understood professional security procedures recognized that the atmosphere had changed.

Rachel picked up her purse.

“I should probably go.”

Pembroke’s voice remained calm.

“Please stay for a moment.”

She stopped.

Ethan looked from Rachel to me.

Then I saw something in his expression.

Recognition.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

My stomach tightened.

“You know her better than you’ve told me,” I said.

Ethan shook his head.

“She’s a friend of my mother’s.”

Diane quickly nodded.

“Exactly. Rachel works with a military family nonprofit.”

“Which one?” I asked.

Diane hesitated.

That hesitation mattered.

Rachel answered for her.

“American Service Partners.”

I knew the name.

It had appeared repeatedly in a financial review involving vendors seeking access to upcoming military logistics opportunities.

I looked at Ethan.

“Did Rachel introduce you to Warren Beckett?”

He didn’t answer.

“Ethan?”

“We’ve met professionally.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

His jaw tightened.

Then Pembroke spoke.

“Major Rourke, we should continue this conversation somewhere private.”

Ethan looked at him.

“Sir, am I in trouble?”

Pembroke’s expression revealed nothing.

“Your promotion status is being reviewed while several questions are clarified.”

Diane gasped.

“Because of her?”

She pointed at me.

I stayed calm.

“No.”

Diane stared.

“Don’t pretend you had nothing to do with this.”
