My Mother-in-Law Sold Both Her Houses and Announced She Was Moving In With Us. I Didn’t Argue—I Smiled and Gave Her the Address of the Secret Manhattan Apartment Where My Husband Was Living With His Mistress. Then I Calmly Sat Back and Waited to See How the Drama Would Unfold…

Part 2 of 3

“What?”

I lowered my voice as though revealing a wonderful family secret.

“He has another apartment.”

Judith became instantly interested.

“Another apartment?”

“Three bedrooms, beautiful building, full-time doorman, close to Central Park.”

Technically, I didn’t know whether it had three bedrooms.

But I knew Judith wouldn’t pause long enough to check.

“Why didn’t Bryce tell me?”

“He wanted privacy.”

That part was completely true.

Judith interpreted it differently.

“That boy! He was probably planning to surprise me.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course she believed that.

“Probably.”

Kayla’s voice suddenly appeared in the background.

“Ask her if there’s a gym!”

Judith repeated the question.

“Yes,” I said. “A very nice one.”

“Then send me the address. We’ll go there directly Saturday morning.”

I hesitated just long enough to make the lie feel real.

“Are you sure? Maybe you should call Bryce first.”

Judith scoffed.

“Absolutely not. I want to surprise him.”

That was exactly what I hoped she would say.

“All right.”

I sent the address.

Thirty seconds later, Judith replied with three heart emojis.

Saturday Morning

At 8:15 Saturday morning, Bryce came downstairs wearing a gray sweater and dark jeans.

He looked unusually relaxed.

“Golf?” I asked.

“Breakfast with some investors.”

I poured coffee.

“On a Saturday?”

He smiled and kissed Owen’s head.

“Money doesn’t take weekends off.”

Neither did dishonesty, apparently.

He grabbed his keys.

Before leaving, he looked back at me.

“Don’t wait for lunch. I may be gone awhile.”

“Take all the time you need.”

He paused.

Perhaps something in my voice sounded different.

But then his phone buzzed.

He checked the screen and smiled.

That was enough to distract him.

The door closed.

At 9:02, Judith texted me.

WE’RE HERE!!!

At 9:06:

This building is gorgeous.

At 9:09:

The doorman says Bryce is upstairs!

At 9:10:

He looks confused but he’s letting us up.

I placed my phone beside my coffee.

Then I waited.

The First Phone Call

My phone rang at 9:24.

Bryce.

I let it ring twice before answering.

“Hi.”

His voice was low and strained.

“Why is my mother here?”

I looked toward the backyard where Owen was kicking a soccer ball against the fence.

“Which ‘here’?”

Silence.

Then:

“Nora.”

I had never heard my name sound like that.

“Your mother called Thursday. She said she’d sold her properties and wanted to move in with us. I assumed your other apartment would be more comfortable.”

Another silence.

“How do you know about this place?”

There it was.

Not denial.

Not confusion.

Just fear.

“We’ll talk later.”

“Nora, listen to me—”

A woman’s voice exploded in the background.

“Bryce, who are these people?”

Then Judith shouted something I couldn’t fully hear.

Kayla yelled,

“Mom, that’s your bracelet!”

I almost admired the timing.

Bryce returned to the phone.

“Nora, please.”

“Enjoy breakfast with your investors.”

I ended the call.

When Everyone Learned the Truth

Judith called seven minutes later.

Unlike Bryce, she didn’t bother lowering her voice.

“WHO IS THIS WOMAN?”

I moved the phone away from my ear.

“You should probably ask Bryce.”

“She’s wearing a robe in his apartment!”

“Then I’m guessing she lives there.”

“You knew?”

For the first time in eight years, Judith sounded uncertain around me.

“Yes.”

“And you sent us here?”

“You told me you wanted to live wherever your successful son was spending his money.”

Silence.

I continued calmly.

“I simply gave you the correct address.”

Judith began saying my name, but another argument erupted behind her.

Then the call disconnected.

I didn’t feel victorious.

Mostly, I felt tired.

For months I had carried a secret that belonged to someone else.

Now it had returned to its owners.

Bryce Came Home Alone

At 2:40 that afternoon, Bryce walked through our front door.

He looked as though he had aged five years since breakfast.

Owen was at my sister’s house by then.

I had made sure of that.

Bryce stood in the living room while I remained seated on the sofa.

“How long?” he asked.

“Four months.”

He rubbed both hands over his face.

“You knew for four months?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you say anything?”

I looked at him carefully.

“Because I needed to know who I was dealing with before I decided what to do.”

He started pacing.
