Prince William and Princess Kate’s ‘defiant stance’ on royal protocol ahead of big family move

Prince William and Princess Kate are preparing for a major change in family life. Later this year, the couple will leave Adelaide Cottage and move with their three children into Forest Lodge, a larger residence also located within Windsor. Unlike Adelaide Cottage, the new home offers twice the number of bedrooms and, according to insiders, represents much more than just a practical upgrade.

Sources close to the family have described the decision as a “fresh start” following Kate’s health struggles and the difficult period they have endured since moving to Windsor.

A New Chapter After a Difficult Year

The move comes after what has been one of the most challenging years for the Wales family. In 2024, Princess Kate, 43, was diagnosed with cancer and underwent treatment. In January this year, she announced that she was in remission, and has since begun a gradual return to royal duties while carefully balancing her public role with her personal wellbeing.

One source told the BBC: “Windsor has become their home. However, over the last few years while they have lived at Adelaide Cottage there have been some really difficult times. Moving gives them an opportunity for a fresh start and a new chapter. It’s an opportunity to leave some of the more unhappy memories behind.”

Among those difficult memories was the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, which came just months after William and Kate had first settled at Adelaide Cottage.

Protecting Boundaries and Family Life

Beyond the practical reasons for moving, insiders say the decision also reflects William and Kate’s determination to protect their family life and mental health. A source told US Weekly: “The new house marks a new era for the family. The decision to move into this new home is a significant one that signals independence, though it is not entirely surprising.”

“They are very strict about their boundaries when it comes to family and mental wellbeing,” the source added. “They have witnessed how the role of monarch can consume one’s entire being. While they take their responsibilities very seriously, they are not afraid to say no when necessary.”

Preparing for the Future

As heir to the throne, Prince William is said to already be thinking about what kind of monarch he wants to be. According to The Times, he is expected to “do it his way” and ensure the monarchy is “fit for purpose in the modern era.”

Royal author Tom Quinn told Harper’s Bazaar earlier this year that William’s reign is likely to look very different from that of his father: “What we can expect to see when William and Kate take the throne is a much more emotionally engaged couple. And it’s partly because they want to be a king and queen who are seen to engage much more with ordinary people in a very relaxed way.”

In that context, the move to Forest Lodge carries symbolic weight. It is more than just a change of address—it is a statement of independence, an assertion of privacy, and a step toward the future William and Kate envision both as parents and as the next King and Queen of the United Kingdom.
