Queen Camilla Channels Queen Elizabeth in Elegant Look With Black Veil for Historic Vatican Visit

Queen Camilla’s solemn visit to the Vatican took an unexpected turn when her striking outfit — particularly a bold headpiece — stole the spotlight and set social media ablaze.

On October 23, 2025, King Charles III and Queen Camilla attended a historic service with Pope Leo XIV at the Sistine Chapel, marking a major moment in the thawing relationship between the Catholic and Anglican churches. But while the event itself was centuries in the making, it was Camilla’s fashion choice that captured most of the public’s attention.

A Historic Day — and a Controversial Look

King Charles made history as the first reigning British monarch to pray publicly with a pope since Henry VIII’s break from Rome in 1534. Dressed in a blue suit, white shirt, and black tie, the King opted for understated formality.

Camilla, meanwhile, adhered strictly to Vatican protocol. Women attending papal audiences must wear a modest black dress and a black mantilla — a traditional lace or silk veil. She chose a Fiona Clare black dress and a Philip Treacy mantilla, arriving at the Apostolic Palace in the State Bentley.

The ensemble drew clear inspiration from the late Queen Elizabeth II’s own Vatican visits. However, while Camilla’s adherence to tradition was impeccable, her elaborate headpiece became the unexpected focus of the day.

Why the Queen Wore Black

In papal audiences, some Catholic queens are permitted to wear white under a centuries-old custom known as il privilegio del bianco — “the privilege of the white.” This honor is reserved for Catholic royals such as Queen Letizia of Spain, Queen Mathilde of Belgium, and Princess Charlene of Monaco.

Since Queen Camilla is not Catholic, she followed the standard rule and wore black from head to toe, including her dramatic veil.

A Subtle Tribute to the Late Queen

Camilla accessorized her outfit with a “raspberry pip” brooch — a Georgian cross set with transparent topaz and diamonds. The piece once belonged to Queen Elizabeth II and is valued at around $53,000. Jewelry expert Maxwell Stone described it as “a deeply sentimental piece” and one of the late monarch’s favorites.

Camilla has worn the brooch several times before, including at Christmas 2023 and during her first church service at Sandringham earlier this year — a subtle nod to her mother-in-law’s enduring legacy.

“She Has a Vulture on Her Head”: Online Reaction

Despite the symbolism, Camilla’s headpiece became the center of online ridicule. One user wrote, “Why is she wearing that on her head?” while another said, “That headpiece is ridiculous… a simple veil would have been enough.”

Others were more cutting: “Camilla looks like she has a vulture on her head,” one commenter joked. Another added, “Is she trying to make a veil look like a crown of thorns?”

Many royal watchers felt the look distracted from the moment’s solemnity, with one user noting, “The Queen’s headpiece isn’t appropriate for an official Vatican visit.”

A Visit Centuries in the Making

Despite the noise, the visit itself was a milestone in royal and religious history. The King and Queen joined Pope Leo XIV for a prayer service beneath Michelangelo’s famed Sistine Chapel ceiling, blending Anglican and Catholic traditions. The ceremony began with the Lord’s Prayer in English and featured hymns performed by the Sistine Chapel Choir, alongside the choirs of St George’s Chapel, Windsor, and the Chapel Royal at St James’s Palace.

It was a service meant to symbolize unity, peace, and shared faith — yet, in true royal fashion, the internet found something else to debate.

In the end, it wasn’t the prayers or the centuries of history that stole the moment — but a single, unforgettable veil that reminded the world just how closely every royal detail is watched, dissected, and judged.
