Part 2 of 3

I didn’t know whether the investment was fraudulent or simply reckless. What I knew was that Daniel had used money the company needed to meet its obligations.

Karen referred me to a business attorney who reviewed the records with the other members. They called a formal meeting to address the unauthorized transfer and the company’s deteriorating finances.

Daniel arrived expecting another argument with me.

Instead, he found his business partners, the bookkeeper, and counsel waiting around the conference table.

The members voted to remove him from day-to-day management under the operating agreement while the financial review continued. He retained his ownership interest, but he no longer had authority to move company money or make major commitments on its behalf.

Daniel stared at the written resolution.

“You’re taking my company away from me?”

One of his partners, Frank, shook his head. “We’re trying to keep it open. Our employees have families, Daniel. We can’t keep missing payments while you chase this deal.”

Daniel looked at me.

“You planned this.”

“I asked for the records,” I said. “The numbers made the decision necessary.”

He left without another word.

That evening, Noah asked why his father hadn’t called in two weeks. I told him Daniel was dealing with problems at work but that none of those problems were Noah’s responsibility.

Noah nodded, then took the baseball tickets from the kitchen drawer. He’d kept them all this time.

“I don’t think I want to go with Dad anymore,” he said.

I sat beside him and waited.

“He always has somewhere else he’d rather be.”

For the first time, I couldn’t think of anything to say that would make him feel better.

PART 2 — THE PRICE OF COMING BACK

What Vanessa Was Hiding

After Daniel lost his management position, the development venture began demanding additional money. He’d already used much of his personal savings and borrowed against investments held in his name alone. Vanessa kept insisting that the project needed one final contribution before it could begin returning profits.

Daniel later told me he’d started noticing inconsistencies. The developer was difficult to reach, projected returns kept changing, and Vanessa became irritated whenever he asked for financial statements. He still wanted to believe her because admitting she’d misled him would mean questioning everything he’d sacrificed to be with her.

One evening, he came home early to the apartment they shared and heard Vanessa speaking on the phone in the bedroom.

“Daniel doesn’t have the money anymore,” she said. “I told you we should’ve gotten more out of him while we had the chance.”

Daniel stopped in the hallway. He recognized the name Vanessa used during the conversation: Eric, the man who had introduced the investment.

He heard her say something about the baby, then lower her voice.

When he confronted her, Vanessa initially claimed she’d been discussing ordinary business expenses. Daniel demanded to know why Eric was involved in conversations about her pregnancy.

“You told me he was just a business contact,” he said.

“He is. You’re making this into something it isn’t.”

“Then tell me why you said we should’ve gotten more money out of me.”

Vanessa sat down on the edge of the bed. For several minutes, she refused to answer. Eventually, she admitted that she and Eric had been involved before she reconnected with Daniel.

She had known she was pregnant before she and Daniel resumed their relationship.

“I didn’t know what to do,” she said. “Eric wasn’t ready to help, and you were there. You were kind to me.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You told me I was going to be a father.”

“I thought maybe the timing could work.”

“You knew the timing didn’t work.”

Vanessa began crying. She insisted that she’d developed genuine feelings for Daniel, even if she’d handled the situation badly. But when he asked about the money, she admitted that part of what he’d given her had been used to pay debts connected to Eric’s struggling venture.

Daniel moved out the next morning.

He later arranged for a legally appropriate parentage test after the baby was born. The result confirmed he wasn’t the child’s father. By then, Vanessa had stopped returning his calls, and much of the money he’d provided was tied up in expenses he couldn’t easily recover.

The investment dispute remained unresolved. Daniel had no immediate way to replace the company funds he’d transferred, and his former partners were pursuing repayment through counsel.

For the first time in more than twenty years, he was living alone in a rented apartment, without his management position or the family he’d left behind.

The House With the Boxes

Daniel came to our house on a Saturday afternoon, six months after he’d moved out.

I was packing dishes into cardboard boxes. Noah was in the backyard cleaning his bicycle, and Emily had come home from college to help us move. The divorce proceedings were nearing completion, and we’d reached a tentative property settlement that would allow me to purchase a smaller house while Daniel retained certain business interests and responsibility for debts assigned to him.

Daniel stood in the doorway, looking around at the half-empty living room.

“Where’s everything going?”

“We’re moving next month.”

“Rebecca, this is our home.”

I folded a dish towel and placed it in a box.

“It was our home, Daniel. We’re selling it as part of the settlement.”

He looked exhausted. His hair had gone noticeably grayer, and his jacket hung loosely from his shoulders. For a moment, I felt the old instinct to make him coffee and ask whether he’d eaten.

Then he spoke.

“Vanessa lied to me.”

I waited.

“The baby isn’t mine. She was seeing someone else before we got together, and she knew it. She wanted my money, Rebecca. That’s why she came back.”

He rubbed his eyes.

“I gave up everything for somebody who was using me.”

I leaned against the kitchen counter. “I’m sorry you were deceived, Daniel.”

He looked relieved, as though my sympathy meant we’d already begun repairing things.

“I know I’ve made a terrible mess. But we had twenty-four good years. Surely that has to count for something.”

“It does count. That’s why this has been so painful.”

He stepped closer.

“I want to come home. I want us to try again.”

I shook my head.

“You didn’t lose me because Vanessa lied to you. You lost me when you decided I wasn’t worth treating with respect.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I wasn’t thinking clearly. I thought I’d found something I’d been missing.”

“And while you were looking for it, Noah was waiting at baseball games, Emily was worrying about tuition, and I was trying to keep your company from falling apart.”

Daniel covered his face.
