Part 1 of 3

The Son He Rejected and the Fortune He Never Saw Coming

The contraction was so strong that I could barely catch my breath. I gripped the hospital blanket, waiting for the pain to ease, when my husband placed a $250,000 check beside my hand.

“Sign the agreement, Evelyn. Take the money, raise your daughter, and stay out of my life.”

I stared at him, struggling to understand how the man I had loved for six years could speak so calmly while I was in labor.

Then he delivered the news that changed everything.

“Sloane gave me a son two weeks ago. He’s the heir I’ve always wanted. Your daughter won’t even carry my last name.”

What my husband didn’t know was that I was carrying twins—a daughter and a son.

And he knew even less about the fortune he had been quietly stealing from me.

Chapter 1: The Check on My Hospital Bed

My name is Evelyn Ashford. I was thirty-four years old, living in Seattle, Washington, and preparing to welcome my first children into the world.

My husband, Blake Merrick, was a regional director at Northstar Maritime Group, a successful shipping company founded by my father, Conrad Ashford.

Blake loved telling people he had built his career through determination and hard work. He rarely mentioned that my father had given him his first opportunity.

For six years, I believed we were building a life together.

Apparently, Blake believed he was building something entirely different.

That Thursday afternoon at Evergreen Memorial Hospital, he stood beside my bed in an expensive navy suit, holding a folder of divorce documents.

“The check is more than generous,” he said impatiently. “Most women would be grateful.”

I looked at the proposed settlement agreement. It offered me $250,000 in exchange for accepting his financial terms and agreeing not to pursue certain claims against him.

He had even included language attempting to limit his future responsibilities toward our daughter.

I knew enough to understand that a private agreement couldn’t simply erase a father’s legal obligations to his child.

But the cruelty behind it was unmistakable.

“You planned this while I was pregnant?” I asked.

Blake adjusted his watch.

“Our marriage has been over for months, Evelyn. I just didn’t want to complicate your pregnancy.”

“And Sloane?”

“She’s given me what I wanted. A son.”

I felt something inside me grow strangely quiet.

Three months earlier, a private ultrasound had confirmed I was expecting twins. Blake had missed that appointment, just as he had missed nearly every important moment of my pregnancy.

I had planned to surprise him with the news.

Now I was grateful I hadn’t.

“Leave,” I whispered.

Blake frowned.

“Not until you sign.”

Before he could continue, Dr. Miriam Foster entered the room.

“Mr. Merrick, your wife needs medical attention and a calm environment. You’ll have to leave.”

He gathered his folder, leaving several papers behind.

“I’ll have my attorney contact you tomorrow,” he said.

After the door closed, I asked the nurse to remove him from my approved visitor list.

Then another contraction began.

Chapter 2: The Document He Forgot

While the nurse adjusted my monitors, I noticed a paper sticking out from beneath the settlement agreement.

It was a payment authorization.

The recipient was a company called Harborline Strategic Solutions.

The amount was $155,000.

Blake’s signature appeared at the bottom, alongside Sloane’s.

What frightened me wasn’t the amount.

It was the account number.

The money had been drawn from a joint account that received distributions from a family trust my father had established for me.

Blake had access to that account for household expenses, but he had never been authorized to use those funds for private business ventures.

I photographed the document.

Then I noticed a handwritten instruction.

Release remaining funds before Friday.

Friday was tomorrow.

Before I could examine it further, the medical team noticed a concerning change in one baby’s heart rate.

Dr. Foster moved closer.

“Evelyn, we’re going to need to deliver your babies sooner than expected.”

My hands trembled.

“Will they be okay?”

“We’re doing everything we can to keep you and both babies safe.”

As the team prepared me for an emergency C-section, I managed to call my father.

He answered immediately.

“Sweetheart?”

“Dad, I’m at Evergreen Memorial. The twins are coming, and I need you.”

His voice changed.

“I’m on my way.”

Chapter 3: The Father Blake Underestimated

When I woke after surgery, my father was sitting beside my bed.

Through the nursery window, I had already seen my beautiful babies.

My daughter, Rosalie, had dark hair and delicate fingers.

My son, Emmett, had his father’s eyebrows.

Both needed extra monitoring after their early arrival, but the doctors were cautiously optimistic.

My father held my hand.

“They’re beautiful, Evelyn.”

Then he asked about Blake.

I told him everything.

The affair. The check. The divorce papers. The way Blake had dismissed our daughter because another woman had given him a son.

My father’s expression hardened.

Conrad Ashford had spent thirty-five years building Northstar Maritime Group into a major Pacific Northwest shipping and logistics company.

He was wealthy, respected, and usually impossible to intimidate.

But I had never seen him so angry.

“He said our granddaughter wasn’t worthy of his name?”

I nodded.

“And there’s something else.”

I showed him the payment authorization.

He read it twice.

“Harborline Strategic Solutions,” he murmured.

“You recognize it?”

“That company recently submitted a proposal to take over several of our most profitable regional shipping contracts.”

My stomach tightened.

“Blake signed the payment.”

My father studied the account number.

“And he used money from your trust distributions.”

He immediately contacted the company’s general counsel and an independent forensic accounting firm.

By evening, they had uncovered several suspicious transfers.

The $155,000 payment was only one of them.
