His eyes flicked toward the employees watching us.

The Question He Never Asked

Dean followed me toward the doors.

“You’re humiliating me.”

I stopped.

Of all the things he could have said, that was what he chose.

Not “I’m sorry.”

Not “Please let me explain.”

Not even “Are you okay?”

I turned toward him.

“I found messages between you and an intern, and your first concern is embarrassment?”

His face tightened.

“You don’t understand the situation.”

“Then perhaps Sienna can explain it while she unpacks your shirts.”

I walked away before he could answer.

My hands started trembling only after I reached my car.

I sat there for several minutes.

Then my phone began ringing.

Dean.

Again.

Again.

Again.

I silenced it and drove to my older cousin Laurel Bennett’s bakery in Matthews.

Laurel took one look at me and immediately led me into her office.

“What happened?”

I managed three words.

“Dean has someone.”

That was where I finally cried.

Not because I wanted him back.

I cried because seventeen years deserved more respect than he had given them.

A Phone Call Changed Everything

After I told Laurel what had happened, she asked whether I had saved evidence.

“Yes.”

“Then don’t delete anything.”

My phone buzzed.

An unfamiliar Charlotte number.

I almost ignored it.

Then a voicemail appeared.

It was from Malcolm Reed, an internal compliance officer at Dean’s company.

His message was careful.

He asked me to contact him before signing any financial documents Dean might bring home.

That sentence made me stop breathing for a second.

I called immediately.

Malcolm would not reveal confidential company information, but he told me enough.

Dean’s conduct with Sienna was only part of an internal review.

There was also an outside consulting entity called Northbridge Strategy Partners.

I had never heard of it.

Then Malcolm asked,

“Mrs. Holloway, have you ever authorized your husband to sign documents on your behalf?”

“No.”

There was a pause.

“Then please speak with your own attorney as soon as possible.”

When the call ended, Laurel was staring at me.

“This is bigger than the intern.”

I knew she was right.

What I Found Behind the Tax Files

Dean finally reached me that afternoon.

His voice was sharp.

“Where are you?”

“That doesn’t matter.”

“You created a disaster at my office.”

I almost laughed.

“Your office was already investigating you.”

Silence.

Then his tone changed.

“Who have you spoken to?”

That question told me everything.

I said,

“What is Northbridge Strategy Partners?”

Another silence.

Longer this time.

“Meredith, listen carefully. Do not involve yourself in business matters you don’t understand.”

I had heard Dean speak to junior employees that way.

Never me.

“My name is connected to it, isn’t it?”

He did not answer.

I ended the call.

Laurel drove home with me.

Inside Dean’s office, we searched carefully through financial records, old tax folders, insurance documents, and property paperwork.

Behind a folder marked “Roof Estimates,” I found an envelope containing statements from Northbridge Strategy Partners.

Nearly $186,000 had moved through the account over eighteen months.

Then I saw my name.

Meredith S. Holloway.

Authorized member.

Below it was a signature.

My signature.

Except I had never written it.

I sat down.

Laurel whispered,

“Call a lawyer.”

I did.

Sienna Asked to Meet Me

At 6:40 that evening, I received a text.

It was Sienna.

Mrs. Holloway, I know you have every reason to ignore me. But Dean lied to me, too. There are documents you need to see.

I showed Laurel.

She insisted on coming.

We met Sienna at a crowded café in SouthPark.

She was already seated when we arrived.

Her eyes were red.

She stood when she saw me.

“I’m sorry.”

I remained standing.

She swallowed.

I hated hearing it.

But I believed her.

Dean had always been skilled at giving people exactly enough truth to make a larger lie believable.
