My father had begun investigating Lucinda years before my marriage.

I sat inside the private viewing room and stared at the words until they blurred.

Grant called from several unfamiliar numbers.

I ignored every call.

Lucinda left a voicemail.

I saved the recording.

A year earlier, I might have called her back and apologized for upsetting her.

I might have agreed to meet privately.
