Buckingham Palace provided an update on King Charles’s health at precisely 9pm, and there’s a specific reason for the timing.
King Charles briefly admitted to hospital for observation
King Charles made a short visit to the hospital earlier today due to side effects from his cancer treatment, Buckingham Palace confirmed in an official statement at 9pm. The King had already postponed his scheduled engagements on Friday to focus on his recovery and has since returned to Clarence House.
The late-night announcement was carefully timed, as his medical team and staff had been assessing whether his planned trip to Birmingham should proceed. Ultimately, they decided to postpone the visit to prioritise his well-being. A royal source reassured that the King’s “recovery path continues in a positive direction” and emphasised that the hospital visit was “no drama.”
On Thursday morning, Charles visited the London Clinic—where he had been treated for an enlarged prostate in January 2024—traveling to and from the hospital by car. However, it is understood that this visit was not a major concern, and no further updates on his condition are expected. Any minor adjustments to his schedule for the coming week will be announced if necessary.
Queen Camilla did not accompany the King during his brief hospital stay.
The side effects, though unspecified, are believed to be temporary and not uncommon with certain medical treatments. Despite this, the King remains in good spirits at Clarence House, where he continues to work on state papers and conduct calls from his study.
A Buckingham Palace spokesperson stated: “His Majesty was due to receive credentials from the ambassadors of three different nations this afternoon. Tomorrow, he was due to undertake four public engagements in Birmingham and is greatly disappointed to be missing them on this occasion. He very much hopes that they can be rescheduled in due course and offers his deepest apologies to all those who had worked so hard to make the planned visit possible.”
Despite the brief setback, it is understood that the King still intends to proceed with his historic state visit to Italy in ten days.
King Charles was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer in February 2024 but resumed public duties in April while continuing weekly treatment. This week, he has had a packed schedule, including attending a media reception and visiting a soil exhibition.
