Part 2 of 3

“You did the right thing telling us.”

I started crying.

For years, adults had told us we were exaggerating, lying, or being difficult.

Someone had finally listened.

PART 2 — THE SECRET INSIDE DAD’S ENVELOPE

The Mother Who Chose Silence

Gavin was arrested after officers reviewed the initial evidence and interviewed hospital staff.

The investigation was far from finished, but he was no longer standing beside our beds, telling us what to say.

Mom remained at the hospital.

The following morning, she asked to see us.

I didn’t want her there.

Hannah did.

“I just need to know why,” she said.

A hospital social worker stayed nearby during the conversation.

Mom entered carrying her brown purse.

Her eyes were swollen.

“My girls,” she whispered. “I was so worried about you.”

Hannah stared at her.

“You told the doctor we fell down the stairs.”

Mom sat down.

“I panicked. I didn’t know what else to say.”

“You could’ve told the truth,” I replied.

She began crying.

“You don’t understand what Gavin is like when he’s angry.”

I looked at her.

“We understand better than anyone.”

Mom wiped her cheeks.

“I thought I could keep things from getting worse.”

Hannah’s voice trembled.

“You heard us asking for help.”

Mom looked away.

“I made mistakes.”

“You left us alone with him,” Hannah said.

For several seconds, Mom said nothing.

Then she whispered, “I was scared too.”

I believed she had been frightened of Gavin.

I’d seen him intimidate her.

But I’d also seen her ignore our injuries, dismiss our fear, and repeat his lies to people who might have helped us.

“You were supposed to protect us,” I said.

Mom reached for my hand.

I pulled away.

The social worker ended the visit when Hannah became overwhelmed.

After Mom left, my sister curled toward me.

“I kept thinking she’d finally choose us.”

I wrapped my arms around her.

“I know.”

Neither of us spoke for a long time.

The Uncle We Thought Had Forgotten Us

Detective Valerie Vance visited us the next morning.

She explained that investigators were working to recover the recordings and review the financial concerns we’d described.

Then she smiled gently.

“There’s someone here to see you. Your uncle Douglas.”

Hannah sat upright.

“He’s here?”

“He flew in after we contacted him.”

A moment later, Douglas appeared in the doorway.

His hair had turned gray since we’d last seen him. He wore a wrinkled jacket and looked exhausted.

When he saw our injuries, his expression crumpled.

“Oh, girls.”

Hannah began crying.

Douglas approached carefully.

“Can I hug you?”

She nodded.

He held her gently, then turned toward me.

I hadn’t realized how badly I needed to see someone who remembered us before Gavin.

“I tried calling,” Douglas said. “Your mother kept telling me you didn’t want to speak with me.”

“We never said that,” I whispered.

“I know.”

He sat beside us.

“I should’ve come sooner.”

I shook my head.

“You didn’t know what was happening.”

Douglas looked down.

“I knew something was wrong. I just couldn’t get anyone to tell me what.”

Then he removed a worn envelope from his jacket.

Our names were written on the front in Dad’s handwriting.

For Tessa and Hannah, when you turn eighteen.

My throat tightened.

“Dad wrote that?”

Douglas nodded.

“He gave it to me shortly before he passed. He wanted you to have it when you were old enough to understand the arrangements he’d made.”

Inside was a letter and a small brass key.

The letter began:

My beautiful girls,

If you’re reading this, you’re eighteen. I wish I could be there to celebrate with you.

Dad wrote about the trust, the importance of making our own decisions, and the people we could contact for help.

Then I reached a paragraph that made me stop.

I’ve left certain business records with my attorney because I discovered serious irregularities involving my former partner, Raymond Cross. None of this is your responsibility. If anyone pressures you about the trust, speak to Douglas and the trustee before signing anything.

At the bottom, Dad had written:

No amount of money is worth your peace of mind. Look after each other, but remember that you both deserve lives of your own.

Hannah wiped her eyes.

“Who’s Raymond Cross?”

Douglas sighed.

“Your father’s former business partner. They had a serious disagreement over financial transactions before Thomas became ill.”

I looked at the letter.

“Did Gavin know him?”

Douglas hesitated.

“That’s something we need to find out.”

The Recording Gavin Feared

Investigators recovered the old phone with proper authorization and preserved the recordings.

Some contained Gavin shouting at us.

Others captured Mom telling us to stop complaining or warning us not to discuss family matters with outsiders.

Detective Vance explained that the recordings supported our statements and would be reviewed alongside medical evidence and witness accounts.

But one file caught her attention.

It was the recording from two weeks before our birthday.

Gavin’s voice was clear.

“Once they turn eighteen, the trustee starts dealing directly with them. We need those signatures before they get any ideas.”

A second man’s voice answered.

The words were faint, but investigators could hear enough to identify a discussion about financial control.

Then Gavin said a name.

Raymond.

Detective Vance played that short portion for me.

“Do you recognize the other voice?”

I shook my head.

“No. But Dad mentioned Raymond Cross in his letter.”

She nodded.

“We’re looking into that connection.”

Investigators later confirmed that Gavin had been communicating with Cross, who had previously worked with Dad.

Cross had been involved in disputed business transactions, and Dad had preserved documents relevant to those concerns.

The financial records remained with Dad’s former attorney.

The brass key from his envelope belonged to a secure records box containing copies of correspondence and related documents.

With Douglas’s help, the attorney provided the appropriate records to investigators.

The evidence suggested that Gavin and Cross had been discussing ways to persuade Hannah and me to give them authority over trust distributions.

They couldn’t simply take the money.

The trust was managed by an independent trustee, and Gavin had no automatic right to its assets.

That explained why he had become increasingly aggressive as our birthday approached.

He needed us to cooperate.

“He kept saying we weren’t responsible enough to handle Dad’s money,” Hannah told Detective Vance.

Douglas shook his head.

“Your father made those arrangements specifically to protect you.”

I thought about the night Gavin had taken the letter addressed to us.

He hadn’t been worried that we’d waste the money.

He’d been afraid we’d discover he had no right to control it.

The Man Who Came Looking for Us

Several days later, Detective Vance returned with another question.

“Tessa, do you remember anyone visiting your home who might have been connected to Gavin’s financial dealings?”

I thought about the months before our birthday.

Then I remembered a man who’d visited while Gavin was away.

He had dark hair and a pale scar near his left eyebrow.

He’d spent nearly an hour speaking with Mom in the kitchen.

When I entered, they stopped talking.

“Who’s that?” I’d asked afterward.

Mom had dismissed him as a friend of Gavin’s.

I described him to Detective Vance.

She wrote down the details.

Later, investigators identified the man as Raymond Cross.

Hospital security also reported that someone matching his description had asked whether Hannah and I were still admitted.

He hadn’t been allowed to visit.

When Detective Vance told us, Hannah looked frightened.

“Why would he come here?”

“We don’t know his intentions,” the detective replied. “But hospital staff followed the visitor restrictions, and he wasn’t allowed near you.”

I thought about Dad’s letter again.

For years, Gavin had presented himself as the man who’d rescued our family after Dad passed away.

Now I wondered whether his interest in Mom had been connected to Dad’s money and business records from the beginning.

I couldn’t prove that.

But I no longer believed Gavin had simply become controlling because he disliked teenagers.

There was a financial motive behind at least some of his behavior.

And our mother had known more than she’d admitted.

What Mom Finally Admitted

The investigation continued for several weeks.

Detectives reviewed financial correspondence, interviewed witnesses, and examined the recordings.

The case against Gavin centered on the harm he’d caused Hannah and me.

The financial inquiry revealed a separate effort to gain control over our trust distributions.

Messages showed that Gavin, Cross, and Mom had discussed persuading us to sign documents granting authority over the money.

No such transfer had been completed.

The trustee had not released funds to Gavin or Mom.

But the correspondence contradicted their claim that they were merely trying to help us.

When Detective Vance explained Mom’s involvement, Hannah asked her to repeat it.

“Mom knew they wanted us to sign?”

“The records indicate she participated in those discussions,” the detective replied.

Hannah stared at the floor.

“She told us she was protecting us.”

I remembered Mom crying beside our hospital beds.
