Happy Soul Moral Stories

After Three Years of Working Abroad, My Husband Finally Came Home—but Even the Way He Held Me in Bed Felt Like Something He Had Learned From Another Woman. I Asked, “Who Taught You to Sleep Like That?” He Went Silent, Then Said, “If You Pretend You Don’t Know, You Can Keep Being My Wife.” Days Later, His 27-Year-Old Assistant Walked Into My House, Fell Right in Front of Him, and Somehow I Became the One He Blamed. I Didn’t Fight for Him. I Quietly Saved Every Photo and Financial Record I Could Find—Because When He Eventually Came to Me With His Strange Plan for Our Divorce, I Was Ready to Agree for a Reason He Never Suspected.

Part 2 of 3

He Called Her Temporary

My parents lived in Greenwich, less than an hour away.

I drove there with one overnight bag and the envelope of expense records.

My mother hugged me at the door and didn’t ask questions until after I had eaten.

My father read only three pages.

Then he put them down.

“Do you have a lawyer?”

“Not yet.”

“Get your own.”

That afternoon I contacted Laura Kim, an attorney my father had used for years on family business matters.

I expected her to talk about revenge.

She didn’t.

She asked one question.

“What do you want protected?”

“Everything that is legally mine.”

“Good. Start there.”

Over the following weeks, Evan stopped hiding Paige.

She attended company dinners.

Industry events.

A charity gala where I had been listed as his guest.

Someone sent me a photograph of Evan walking into a restaurant with his hand at Paige’s back.

I saved it.

Then another photograph arrived.

And another.

What interested me more was what Evan told people privately.

An old friend named Daniel called me one evening.

“I probably shouldn’t tell you this.”

“Then don’t.”

“Evan says Paige is temporary.”

I stopped writing notes.

“Temporary?”

“He says you’re still his wife. That he’s just… managing things.”

I almost admired the confidence required to believe two women could simply be assigned different positions in his life.

Paige was the excitement.

I was the permanent structure.

At least, that was how Evan saw it.

And something else had changed.

He knew I was speaking to my family again.

That mattered to him.

My parents’ money had never been part of our marriage. I had deliberately kept it separate.

Evan had once called that noble.

Now he asked whether my father was helping me.

“Helping me do what?”

“Don’t play games.”

“I’m staying with my parents.”

“Your father has never liked me.”

“This isn’t about my father.”

He leaned closer.

“Claire, don’t let your family turn this into something bigger than it is.”

I looked at him.

“How big is three years?”

He didn’t answer.

The Pictures Paige Couldn’t Resist

I knew Paige wanted one thing Evan had never fully given her.

Public recognition.

So I gave her an opportunity.

Through a third party, I arranged for several clear photographs of her and Evan together to reach her.

Nothing intimate.

Nothing fabricated.

Just dinners, airports, his hand at her waist outside a hotel, the two of them arriving at a company gala.

I included no message.

Two days later, Paige posted one.

Then another.

Within forty-eight hours, people had connected the dates.

Evan had been married in every photograph.

The reaction was much larger than Paige expected.

The Mercer family company was privately held but extremely reputation-conscious. Clients began asking questions.

Board members called Evan’s father.

My name started appearing in gossip columns despite the fact that I had said nothing publicly.

Evan came to my parents’ house on Sunday.

My father did not invite him inside.

We spoke on the front porch.

“Did you do this?”

“Do what?”

“The photographs.”

“Were they fake?”

He stared at me.

“That isn’t the point.”

“It seems like the point.”

He lowered his voice.

“The board wants this cleaned up.”

“Then clean it up.”

That was when Evan surprised me.

He already had a plan.

His One-Year Marriage Plan

We met three days later in Laura’s office.

Evan came alone.

He sat across from me and explained his solution as if he were presenting a restructuring proposal.

He would divorce me.

He would marry Paige.

Publicly.

The scandal would settle because people could tell themselves he had simply fallen in love.

Then, after approximately a year, when attention had moved elsewhere, he would end the marriage with Paige.

And come back to me.

I waited until he finished.

“You’ve thought this through.”

He leaned forward.

“Claire, listen to me. Even if I’m forced to temporarily marry Paige, you will always be my real wife in every way that matters.”

I looked at Laura.

She kept her face perfectly still.

“And Paige knows this?”

“She doesn’t need every detail.”

There it was.

The same plan he had offered me.

Different woman.

Same lie.

I folded my hands.

“All right.”

Evan blinked.

“All right?”

“I’ll cooperate with a divorce.”

His shoulders dropped.

Relief.

I continued.

“But the financial separation has to be complete first.”

He frowned.

“Why?”

“Because I won’t spend the next year tied to whatever happens between you and Paige.”

He considered that.

Then smiled.

He thought I was protecting our future reunion.

“Fair enough.”

Laura slid the first set of papers toward him.

That was the genuine shift.

Evan still thought he was managing everyone.

But for the first time, he had agreed to something I wanted because he misunderstood why I wanted it.

I Took the House Apart One Receipt at a Time

The divorce moved quickly because Evan wanted it quickly.

I received the investment accounts that were mine.

My inherited assets remained separate.

Joint holdings were divided.

Property purchased with my money was documented and returned to me.

Evan signed because every signature brought him closer to the clean public story he wanted.

Six weeks after the divorce became final, he called.

His tone was almost cheerful.

“I need a favor.”

“What?”

“Paige is moving into the house.”

I looked out the window of my parents’ breakfast room.

“Okay.”

He hesitated.

“That’s it?”

“What else would you like me to say?”

“I thought you might be uncomfortable.”

“I don’t live there anymore.”

He relaxed again.

Then I made three calls.

The next morning, a moving crew arrived.

The walnut dining table had been purchased by me before our marriage.

The living room paintings came from my grandmother.

The antique desk belonged to my father’s family.
