Part 2 of 3

Two weeks later, Nolan received formal notice about the pending sale and the need to arrange a lawful departure.

That was when my phone started ringing.

The Son Who Thought Everything Belonged to Him

Nolan called eleven times before I answered.

“Mom, what is going on?” he demanded.

“What do you mean?”

“Some real estate agent called Paige. They’re saying the house is being sold!”

“That’s correct.”

He sounded genuinely confused.

“You can’t sell my house.”

“Nolan, the property belongs to Bellamy Property Holdings. You know that.”

“You gave it to us!”

“I gave you a place to live. I never signed over the deed.”

Paige’s voice appeared in the background.

“Tell her she can’t do this!”

Nolan returned to the phone.

“You’re ruining our lives over one argument.”

I touched my cheek.

“You raised your hand to your mother in front of twenty people, Nolan. That wasn’t an ordinary argument.”

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then his voice softened.

“Mom, I was upset. You know I didn’t mean it.”

I wanted to believe him.

That was the hardest part.

“I love you,” I said. “But loving you doesn’t mean allowing you to treat me however you want.”

He threatened to contact another attorney.

I told him he had every right to seek legal advice.

Then I ended the call.

I thought the worst part was behind us.

I was wrong.

The Two-Million-Dollar Secret

Three days later, Howard invited me to his office.

When I arrived, several folders were waiting on the conference table.

“Marlene, there’s something important you need to understand about Nolan’s finances.”

He showed me documents his office had obtained through lawful business records, correspondence, and information provided by a lender’s representative.

Nolan and Paige had been living far beyond their means.

They owed money on luxury vehicles, jewelry, private club memberships, and several unsuccessful business ventures.

But one obligation stood out.

Two million dollars.

Nolan had borrowed the money from a private lending group called Westbridge Financial Partners.

To secure the loan, he had presented documents suggesting he would soon acquire an ownership interest in the River Oaks property.

Some of those documents appeared to have been altered.

“He used the house as proof of wealth,” Howard explained. “But he never owned it.”

I stared at the papers.

“Did the lender believe him?”

“They appear to have relied on his representations and additional personal guarantees. Their attorneys are now investigating the discrepancies.”

I felt sick.

Nolan had not simply enjoyed the comfortable life I provided.

He had been using my company’s reputation to obtain money he couldn’t repay.

“Does Paige know?” I asked.

Howard hesitated.

“I think Paige may know more than Nolan realizes.”

The Email From My Daughter-in-Law

That evening, Paige sent me an email.

The subject line read:

Douglas Bellamy Family Trust.

My hands trembled when I opened it.

Douglas had established a trust before his death, with Howard’s firm serving as trustee.

The trust included assets intended to benefit Nolan, but my husband had attached conditions.

He wanted our son to demonstrate financial responsibility, steady employment, and respectful conduct before receiving unrestricted distributions.

Those conditions were evaluated through documented criteria over a twelve-month period, with an independent trustee responsible for reviewing his progress.

Paige’s email contained what appeared to be an amended version of that agreement.

According to the document, she had been appointed trustee and given authority over a substantial portion of the family’s assets.

I immediately called Howard.

“Please tell me this isn’t real.”

He asked me to forward the attachment.

The following morning, he called back.

“Marlene, the document has been altered.”

Someone had copied signatures from older estate-planning files and inserted Paige’s name.

The notary information was inconsistent with the original records.

Howard suspected the document had been assembled using electronic copies Nolan had kept on an old family computer.

“She may have been trying to frighten you into giving up control,” he explained.

I sat silently for a long time.

The woman who had watched my son push me against a table was now trying to use my late husband’s name against me.

Then Howard delivered another piece of news.

Paige and Nolan had filed a petition seeking temporary control over my financial affairs, claiming that my decision to sell the house showed declining judgment.

My own son had signed a statement supporting that claim.

That hurt more than the incident at his birthday party.

The Hearing That Exposed the Truth

The court hearing took place several weeks later in Harris County.

I wore a dark blue suit and carried a folder containing the property records, medical evaluations, and financial documents Howard had prepared.

Paige sat across the room in a cream-colored jacket.

Nolan sat beside her, staring at his hands.

Their attorney argued that my sudden decision to sell a valuable property suggested I was acting irrationally.

Howard presented the history of the property, the preliminary sale discussions that had begun months earlier, and independent medical evaluations confirming that I understood my financial decisions.

The judge reviewed the evidence carefully.

When Howard introduced the disputed trust document, he explained that its authenticity was being examined separately.

He also submitted the original trust records and a preliminary document examiner’s report identifying serious inconsistencies.

Paige’s attorney requested time to review the findings.

The judge made clear that the court would not grant emergency control over my affairs without reliable evidence that such intervention was necessary.

The request was denied.

Further proceedings concerning the questionable documents would be handled through the appropriate legal channels.

Outside the courtroom, Nolan approached me.

His face looked pale and exhausted.

“Mom, can we talk?”

I looked at him.

“Did you know Paige submitted that document?”

He shook his head.

“Not at first.”
