Donald Trump wants to reopen Alcatraz and reveals who will be sent there

Alcatraz, the famous old prison island, has been shut down for over 60 years. These days, it’s mostly known as a tourist spot — but now, Donald Trump wants to bring it back to life.

He recently posted on Truth Social, saying who he believes should be sent to the isolated island near San Francisco.

Expanding Alcatraz

Alcatraz is one of the most well-known prisons in the world, but now it’s more about tourists than prisoners. Around 1.5 million people visit every year to take pictures, explore old prison cells, and hear spooky escape stories.

One of the most famous moments was in 1962, when three inmates escaped and were never found. That, plus the high cost of keeping the place running, led to its closure in 1963.

Despite all that, Trump seems to admire Alcatraz — maybe even feels nostalgic about it. He’s now pushing to not just reopen it, but make it even bigger.

In his Truth Social post, Trump said:

“For too long, America has been plagued by vicious, violent, and repeat Criminal Offenders, the dregs of society, who will never contribute anything other than Misery and Suffering. When we were a more serious Nation, in times past, we did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals, and keep them far away from anyone they could harm. That’s the way it’s supposed to be.”

He added:

“That is why, today, I am directing the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ, to house America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders.”

Part of a Bigger Plan

Trump says this is just one part of a bigger plan to change how the U.S. handles federal prisoners and immigration. After a weekend in Florida, he came back to Washington and voiced his anger at judges who are slowing down deportations by insisting on due process.

“Alcatraz has long been a symbol of law and order. You know, it’s got quite a history,” Trump said.

Still, rebuilding and reopening Alcatraz would be extremely expensive. The prison was originally shut down because it was too costly to maintain. In fact, the government has closed other prisons recently for similar reasons.

Even so, a spokesperson for the Bureau of Prisons said the agency “will comply with all Presidential Orders.”

Pushback from Critics

When asked for more details, the Bureau didn’t say whether reopening Alcatraz is even possible — especially since the island is now part of a national park run by the National Park Service.

Democratic Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, whose district includes Alcatraz, didn’t hold back. On X (formerly Twitter), she wrote:

“It is now a very popular national park and major tourist attraction. The President’s proposal is not a serious one.”

A Tougher Stance on Crime and Immigration

Trump’s announcement comes as he steps up his tough talk on immigration. He recently suggested sending gang suspects to a prison in El Salvador — without trials — and even floated the idea of using the country’s harshest prison, CECOT, for U.S. inmates.

He’s also ordered the creation of a new prison at Guantanamo Bay, which could hold up to 30,000 “worst criminal aliens.”

Whether or not Alcatraz ever holds prisoners again is unclear. But one thing is certain: Trump is making bold moves in the name of law and order. Some see it as a return to justice — others see it as a dangerous throwback.
