Part 2 of 3

“She left,” Adrian snapped. “I told you that years ago.”

“Where did she go?”

“None of your business.”

Teresa made a dismissive sound.

“Clara was always snooping through his paperwork. She should’ve stayed out of things that didn’t concern her.”

Adrian turned toward her.

“Stop talking.”

But Teresa continued.

“She went to that old ranch looking for documents, and after that she made everyone’s life miserable.”

I kept my voice calm.

“What ranch?”

Adrian reached for Teresa’s arm.

“We’re leaving.”

She pulled away.

“Oh, please. That place has been empty for years. Nobody’s going to find anything now.”

His expression changed.

For the first time since my arrest, I saw fear on his face.

“What happened at the ranch?” I asked.

Adrian leaned toward the glass.

“You need to mind your own business, Daniela.”

“You told me Clara moved overseas.”

He gave a small smile.

“And you believed me. That was always your problem.”

Then he hung up.

I watched the three of them walk toward the exit.

Adrian had come to show me the life he’d taken from me.

Instead, he’d given me a place to start looking.

The old Mendoza ranch.

And a missing woman whose name he’d spent years refusing to explain.

PART 2 — THE SECRET AT THE RANCH

The Records They Forgot About

The following morning, I told Maurice everything Adrian and Teresa had said.

He listened carefully, then asked me to repeat the conversation.

“Did Adrian admit hurting Clara?”

“No.”

“Did Teresa say what happened to her?”

“No. She mentioned documents at the ranch and said nobody would find anything there.”

Maurice wrote it down.

“That doesn’t prove a crime, but it’s information investigators can check.”

“Then please make sure they check it.”

He forwarded the details to the investigator reviewing Adrian’s financial activities and the authorities responsible for Clara’s disappearance.

Two days later, he returned.

The ranch was outside San Antonio, Texas. Property records showed that Adrian had arranged renovations there during the month Clara disappeared.

A former maintenance worker remembered Clara arriving with a laptop bag and several folders.

“Did he see her leave?” I asked.

“He doesn’t remember. But he recalls Adrian arriving later that evening.”

I stared at the documents.

“And the company Clara was associated with?”

“It received payments from one of Adrian’s former businesses shortly before she vanished.”

The connection was becoming harder to dismiss.

“Give the investigators everything,” I said.

The Morning My Husband Stopped Smiling

My transfer was scheduled for ten o’clock on Thursday morning.

At nine-fifty, officers escorted me into a processing area.

Through the glass partition, I spotted Adrian with Teresa and Renee.

He checked his watch impatiently.

When he saw me, he smiled.

“Still here? I thought they’d have you on the road by now.”

I didn’t respond.

An officer approached.

“Ms. Salazar, there’s been a change to your transfer arrangements. Your attorney has requested a conference concerning new information.”

Adrian stopped smiling.

“What new information?”

“Sir, you’ll need to direct questions to the appropriate office.”

Minutes later, Maurice arrived with Detective Robert Ellis.

Ellis carried a dark folder.

“Ms. Salazar, we need to clarify the statements you reported during your recent visit.”

Adrian stepped toward the partition.

“This is ridiculous! She’s making up stories because she doesn’t want to go to prison.”

Ellis turned toward him.

“Mr. Mendoza, we’d like to speak with you separately.”

“About what?”

“Clara Mendoza.”

Teresa went still.

Adrian looked at her.

“Don’t say a word until our attorney gets here.”

Ellis nodded.

“You’re entitled to legal representation.”

I watched Adrian take out his phone.

He’d come to watch me leave.

Instead, he was calling his lawyer.

My transfer wasn’t canceled, and my conviction hadn’t disappeared. Investigators simply needed to interview me before the move.

But for the first time since Victor died, Adrian was no longer the only person telling authorities what had happened.

What Clara Had Hidden

Investigators later obtained authorization to search the ranch.

Beneath the floor of a utility room, they discovered a concealed storage compartment.

Inside were photographs, personal belongings, an old laptop, and folders containing business records.

Some belonged to Clara.

Others documented transactions through companies associated with Adrian.

Maurice brought me the news several weeks later.

“Clara was investigating him.”

“Investigating what?”

“Money moving between businesses that don’t appear to have conducted legitimate operations.”

He placed several documents on the table.

“Some accounts overlap with the transactions we’re examining at Salazar Holdings.”

I studied the names.

“So she found the same pattern?”

“Possibly. The investigators are still determining what she knew.”

“Did they find out what happened to her?”

Maurice hesitated.

“That investigation is ongoing. I don’t want to give you unconfirmed information.”

I nodded.

It wasn’t the answer I wanted, but I understood.

“What about my case?”

He opened another folder.

“That’s where the discovery becomes important.”

Investigators had identified payments to a technology contractor Adrian used during his time at Salazar Holdings.

The contractor had maintained remote access to several company devices.

One was my personal computer.

“We believe someone accessed your system without your knowledge,” Maurice said.

I gripped the table.

“The purchase they said I made?”

“It may have been initiated remotely. We’re waiting for the forensic report.”

I remembered Adrian borrowing my secondary phone.

I remembered him saying he’d update its security.

For months, those memories had felt like proof of how foolish I’d been.

Now they were becoming questions investigators could answer.

The Woman Who Lied Under Oath

Teresa refused to cooperate at first.

For weeks, she insisted she’d told the truth at my trial. Adrian continued denying wrongdoing, and his attorneys challenged the financial evidence.

Then investigators confronted Teresa with records that contradicted parts of her testimony.

She had claimed to be at Victor’s house with Adrian on the afternoon he became ill.

But records placed her elsewhere during part of the relevant period.

Eventually, through her attorney, she provided a new statement.

Maurice told me during our next visit.

“She’s admitted that parts of her testimony were false.”

I stared at him.

“What parts?”

“She says Adrian told her to support his account of your visit to Victor. She also acknowledges that he had access to your phone and computer.”

I covered my mouth.

“Did she know what he was planning?”

“She claims she didn’t understand the full scheme. Investigators are checking that.”

I looked away.

Teresa had sat in court and watched me lose my freedom.

She’d called me ambitious, unstable, and ungrateful.

Now she was admitting she’d lied.

“Why is she finally talking?”

Maurice closed the folder.

“Because the evidence has changed her legal position.”

That sounded more believable than a sudden attack of conscience.

The following weeks brought additional findings.

Investigators identified remote-access activity on my computer around the time of the suspicious purchase. Financial records connected Adrian to the contractor responsible for maintaining that access.

A review of company security records also confirmed that I’d been attending a management meeting during part of the period when prosecutors claimed I’d arranged the transaction.
