“I’m Giving Mom My Entire $12,000 Salary—You Pay Your Own Bills!” My Husband Announced. That Night, His Mother Spent $8,000 On Diamonds, And I Refused To Pay For Their Dinner. “Then Get Out Of My Son’s House!” She Snapped—But She Had No Idea What I Knew About That House…

Part 2 of 3

His expression changed.

“You canceled it? Why would you do that?”

I stood, walked to the kitchen cabinet, and took out a plain white dinner plate, which I carried back to the table and placed in front of him.

He looked down at the empty plate.

“What’s this supposed to mean?”

“It means your mother has your twelve thousand dollars, Nathan. I’m sure the two of you can arrange dinner.”

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he pushed the plate aside.

“Claire, I’m your husband.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you acting like feeding me isn’t your responsibility?”

There was something painfully revealing about the question, because Nathan seemed genuinely unable to understand the difference between caring for a spouse and being expected to provide every convenience regardless of how that spouse behaved.

“You told me this afternoon that we should each take care of ourselves financially,” I reminded him. “That’s what I’m doing.”

He shook his head.

“You’re being ridiculous over one decision.”

“It was a pretty important decision, especially considering you made it without me.”

Nathan pulled out his phone.

“Fine. I’ll order something myself.”

He opened a delivery application and began adding items to his cart, choosing enough food for several people, along with desserts and extras that brought the total close to two hundred dollars.

I returned to my book.

A few minutes later, I heard him mutter something under his breath.

He tapped the screen again.

Then again.

“Why isn’t this going through?”

I kept reading.

“Claire, there’s something wrong with my card.”

“Which card?”

“The one I always use.”

I looked up.

“That card is attached to my account. I disabled it this afternoon.”

His face tightened.

“You did what?”

“I turned off the additional cards. You said we were separating our expenses.”

“I’ve used that card for years!”

“Because I allowed you to.”

He held out his phone.

“Then turn it back on.”

I shook my head.

“No, Nathan.”

He stared at me, apparently waiting for the familiar moment when I would apologize, explain myself, and restore everything to the way it had been.

But that moment never came.

Part Four: What His Mother Had Already Done

Patricia entered the dining room a few minutes later, drawn by the raised voices.

“What’s going on in here?”

Nathan turned toward her.

“Claire canceled the dinner deliveries and shut off the cards. Now I can’t even order food.”

Patricia looked at me with open disapproval.

“That’s a very childish way to treat your husband.”

“I’m following the arrangement he announced this afternoon.”

She waved away my explanation.

“He never said you should stop taking care of him.”

I couldn’t help noticing how easily the rules changed whenever Nathan experienced an inconvenience.

“He has his own money,” I replied. “Or rather, you have it now.”

Nathan turned to his mother.

“Mom, can you send me enough to cover dinner? I’ll sort everything else out tomorrow.”

Patricia’s expression shifted so quickly that I almost missed it.

She looked down at her watch, adjusted her sleeve, and avoided his eyes.

“Honey, there’s something I need to explain.”

Nathan lowered his phone.

“What is it?”

“I made a payment this afternoon.”

“Okay. How much?”

She hesitated.

“Eight thousand dollars.”

Nathan stared at her.

“Eight thousand? For what?”

Patricia took a careful breath.

“A diamond necklace I’ve had my eye on for months. The jeweler finally agreed to hold it if I put down a deposit.”

For a moment, the only sound in the room was the soft hum of the refrigerator.

Nathan looked at his mother as though he were waiting for her to admit she was joking.

“You used eight thousand dollars of my paycheck for a necklace?”

“It’s a beautiful piece, sweetheart, and the price was excellent.”

“Mom, that was supposed to be my money for the entire month.”

Patricia straightened in her chair.

“You told me you wanted me to manage it.”

“Manage it, not spend most of it in one afternoon!”

Her face hardened.

“I don’t appreciate that tone. You gave me the money willingly, and I assumed you trusted my judgment.”

Nathan rubbed his forehead.

“How am I supposed to pay for everything now?”

“You’ll have to be more careful with what’s left.”

I watched him absorb those words, recognizing the same dismissive certainty he had shown me only hours earlier.

His mother had accepted the money without hesitation, but she had apparently interpreted managing it as permission to decide how it should be spent.

And Nathan, who had been so eager to surrender responsibility for his finances, was discovering that surrendering control also meant losing the ability to determine someone else’s priorities.

I could have pointed out the irony.

Instead, I remained quiet, because there was nothing I could say that would teach him more effectively than the conversation unfolding before him.

Finally, Nathan looked at me.

“You’re really not going to help me with this?”

I placed my bookmark between the pages.

“Nathan, I care about what happens to you. But I’m not going to keep paying for everything while you and your mother pretend my contributions don’t matter.”

He looked away.

For the first time that evening, he had no immediate answer.

Part Five: The House She Thought Belonged to Her Son

I decided there was little to gain from continuing the conversation, so I stood and gathered my book and glass.

“I’m going upstairs. We can talk tomorrow when everyone has had time to think.”

Nathan remained beside the table, looking down at his phone.

I had nearly reached the staircase when Patricia called after me.

“Just a minute, Claire.”
