Part 2 of 3

The answer was no.

There was already an embryo available.

We proceeded with the third transfer.

That was the cycle that worked.

At the first ultrasound, the technician turned the monitor toward me.

Two heartbeats.

I called Preston immediately afterward.

He answered on the fourth ring.

“What?”

“It’s twins.”

There was a pause.

“Twins?”

“Two babies, Preston.”

“That’s… a lot.”

I waited for him to say he was happy.

He never did.

Now, watching him stand beside Sienna in the NICU, I thought about all the appointments he’d missed.

And about a piece of information I’d discovered while reviewing our fertility records.

Something I had wanted to discuss with him for months.

He had refused every opportunity.

The Envelope on the Table

By the following afternoon, Preston had arranged for an independent laboratory to begin the testing process.

Because the twins were medically fragile, their care team coordinated the collection of appropriate samples.

The lab explained that verified results would take time. There would be no instant answer from a box opened at the bedside.

Preston wasn’t pleased.

“How hard can it be?” he demanded over the phone.

“The test is being done correctly,” I replied.

“I want answers.”

“So do I.”

My attorney, Claire Donovan, visited later that day.

She had handled some property matters for my family before I married Preston.

When I explained what had happened, she listened without interrupting.

Then she asked for copies of our marriage agreement, the fertility-clinic documents, and any messages showing Preston’s refusal to respond during my hospitalization.

“Don’t sign anything he brings you,” she said.

“His mother wants me to agree to a divorce.”

“Then his mother can speak to his lawyer.”

I almost smiled.

Claire placed a folder on the table.

“One more thing. I want you to stop discussing legal matters in the NICU. Your children need a quiet environment, and you need to recover.”

“He’ll come back.”

“Then we’ll arrange a proper meeting elsewhere.”

After she left, I opened the folder.

Inside were copies of the documents I’d requested from the fertility clinic.

One page contained the embryo creation date.

Another listed the consent forms.

And a third contained a notation that had bothered me ever since I first saw it.

It referred to Preston’s medical history.

I read the line again.

Then I put the papers back inside the folder.

For the first time since my water broke, I wasn’t waiting for my husband to tell me what happened next.

I was going to ask the questions myself.

PART 2 — THE RECORD HE DIDN’T WANT OPENED

A Result He Couldn’t Argue With

The paternity results came back several days later.

By then, Ruby had gained a few ounces, and Owen was breathing more comfortably.

Those small improvements mattered more to me than anything happening in my marriage.

Preston, however, called three times that morning demanding to know when the laboratory would release its report.

Claire arranged for the results to be reviewed in a private hospital conference room, away from the NICU.

Preston arrived with Lorraine.

Sienna came too.

I hadn’t invited either woman, but I didn’t object when they entered.

Claire sat beside me.

An independent laboratory representative explained the report.

“The results support Mr. Whitford’s biological paternity of both children with a probability exceeding 99.99 percent.”

Preston stared at the paper.

“That can’t be right.”

The representative calmly explained the testing procedure and the verified samples.

“The findings are conclusive within the stated statistical limits.”

Lorraine took the report from her son.

She read it slowly.

Then she looked at me.

For once, she had nothing to say.

Preston pushed his chair back.

“I want another test.”

Claire folded her hands.

“You’re entitled to seek independent advice, Preston. But accusing Megan without evidence doesn’t make the results disappear.”

He looked at me.

“How is this possible?”

I held his gaze.

“That’s an interesting question.”

I opened the folder I’d brought.

“Because there’s something else we need to discuss.”

Twenty-Two Months Earlier

I took out a document from our fertility clinic.

It wasn’t a secret medical record I’d stolen from Preston’s office.

It was part of the treatment file I was authorized to receive as a patient, including correspondence the clinic had sent about our existing embryos.

“Do you remember our first IVF cycle?” I asked.

Preston frowned.

“What about it?”

“You came to the clinic once. They created six embryos using your sample.”

“So?”

“Two transfers failed. The third worked.”

“I know that.”

“Do you remember why the clinic didn’t need another sample?”

He said nothing.

I slid the document toward him.

“Because the embryos already existed.”

Lorraine leaned forward.

“What does that have to do with anything?”

I looked at Preston.

“Tell your mother what you did twenty-two months ago.”

His face changed.

It was subtle at first.

The color drained from his cheeks, and his eyes moved toward the folder.

“Megan.”

“Tell her.”

“This isn’t the place.”

“You thought the NICU was the right place to accuse me of having another man’s children.”

Lorraine looked between us.

“Preston, what is she talking about?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“It’s private.”

I turned to Claire.

She nodded slightly.

“Preston, you can explain it yourself,” I said. “Or you can keep pretending you don’t understand why the timeline matters.”

He remained silent.

Finally, I looked at Lorraine.

“Your son had a vasectomy twenty-two months ago.”

Lorraine stared at me.

Then she turned toward him.

“What?”

Preston looked down.

“Mom, please.”

“You told me you and Megan were still trying to have children.”

“We were.”

“You told me the treatments weren’t working because of her.”

His silence was answer enough.

Lorraine stood.

“You let me blame her for two years?”

“It wasn’t like that.”

“Then what was it like?”

He looked toward Sienna.

And that was when Lorraine understood another part of the situation.

Her gaze moved to Sienna’s stomach.

“Fourteen weeks,” she whispered.

Sienna shifted in her chair.

“Lorraine…”

“You told me this baby was Preston’s.”

Sienna’s eyes filled with tears.

“I believed it was.”

Lorraine turned back to her son.

“Did you tell her about the procedure?”

Preston said nothing.

“Preston!”

He finally answered.

“No.”

Lorraine let out a sharp cry.

“YOU LIED TO ALL OF US?”

Claire immediately asked everyone to lower their voices.

But Lorraine was already walking toward the door.

Sienna followed a moment later.

Preston stayed seated, staring at the report that proved he was Ruby and Owen’s father.

For the first time since he had arrived at the hospital, he looked genuinely frightened.

The Choice He Made Without Me

After Lorraine and Sienna left, Preston leaned toward me.

“Megan, you don’t understand.”

I looked at him.

“Then explain it.”

He rubbed both hands over his face.

“I didn’t want children. Not yet.”

“You told me you did.”

“I thought I’d change my mind.”

“So you had a procedure without telling me?”

“I didn’t want another argument.”

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because I’d spent years believing that our fertility struggles were something we were facing together.

He’d watched me attend appointments, take medication, and cry after failed transfers.

He knew how much I wanted to be a mother.

And instead of telling me he no longer wanted children, he’d quietly made a permanent decision about his own fertility and let me believe we were still working toward the same future.

“You had every right to decide what happened to your body,” I told him. “But you didn’t have the right to keep lying about what you wanted from our marriage.”

He looked away.

“I thought if the treatments failed, we’d eventually move on.”

“And when I got pregnant?”

“I panicked.”

“So you decided the babies couldn’t be yours?”

He didn’t answer.

I shook my head.

“You knew we had frozen embryos, Preston.”

“I didn’t think about them.”

“You didn’t want to.”

He leaned back.

“I made a mistake.”

“No. You made a series of choices.”

I thought about the twenty-three unanswered calls.

The ambulance.

The operating room.

Ruby’s tiny hand wrapped around my finger.

“And when your children arrived eight weeks early, you chose not to answer the phone.”

Preston lowered his eyes.
