Part 2 of 3

That was the truth.

Nathaniel had always assumed that my quiet lifestyle meant my inheritance was modest.

He had never shown much interest in my family’s financial history.

When we married, I had chosen not to involve myself in his business decisions.

I wanted our marriage to be built on affection, not financial dependence.

Harrison continued.

“The trust maintains substantial rights under its financing agreements. Certain decisions involving future funding, financial reporting, and major transactions require its approval.”

Nathaniel looked at me.

“So you are threatening my company because I want a divorce?”

“No, Nathaniel. Your decision to end our marriage is separate from your company’s contractual obligations.”

I slid another folder across the table.

“But I have recently discovered financial activity that deserves an explanation.”

Brianna, who had been listening from the doorway, suddenly became very still.

The House That Was Never Entirely His

Nathaniel reached for his coffee, but Harrison had not finished.

“There is also a question concerning this property.”

“What about my house?” Nathaniel demanded.

Harrison unfolded a second agreement.

“This residence was acquired through a property holding company affiliated with the Whitcomb trust. Prescott Global Holdings has certain occupancy and contractual rights, but you do not own the property outright.”

Nathaniel stared at him.

“That cannot be right. I arranged the purchase.”

“You negotiated the transaction. The ownership records are another matter.”

I remembered the day Nathaniel brought me here for the first time.

He had proudly shown me the marble staircase, the garden, and the nursery that would eventually become our daughter’s room.

“Everything here is ours,” he had said.

I believed him.

Not because I misunderstood the legal arrangements, but because I believed we were building a shared future.

Now he had tried to use that same house to make me feel powerless.

“You knew about this?” Nathaniel asked me.

“I knew the property was held through the trust. I also knew you had never bothered to read the complete ownership documents.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“What do you want, Laurel?”

I answered without hesitation.

“I want a fair divorce, proper arrangements for our daughter, and the freedom to live without being treated as though I have no voice.”

Harrison closed the property folder.

“The ownership arrangements will be handled through the appropriate legal process. For now, we should address the financial records.”

The Payments Nobody Could Explain

Three months earlier, I had received a routine financial report from the trust’s administrative office.

Normally, I reviewed the summaries and left the detailed work to professional managers.

That month, however, something caught my attention.

Several payments had been made to a consulting company called Northbridge Advisory Services.

The amounts were unusually large.

The descriptions were vague.

And the same individual appeared repeatedly in the supporting documents.

Brianna Keene.

At first, I assumed the payments were ordinary business expenses.

But the more I examined them, the less sense they made.

I eventually requested a review from an independent accountant.

Now I opened my laptop and turned the screen toward Nathaniel.

“Do you recognize this company?”

He leaned forward.

“Northbridge? They provide outside consulting for several projects.”

“And who approved their contracts?”

“My operations department handles those matters.”

I selected another document.

“These three transfers total approximately 2.4 million dollars. The consulting reports do not clearly explain the services provided.”

Nathaniel frowned.

“That does not mean anything improper happened.”

“I agree. That is why I requested an independent review instead of making accusations.”

Then I displayed the company registration information.

Brianna’s name appeared among the people associated with Northbridge.

Nathaniel slowly turned toward her.

“Brianna, why did you never mention your connection to this company?”

She stepped forward.

“Because it was a private investment arrangement. There is nothing unusual about that.”

“You were advising my company while benefiting from one of its outside contractors?”

Her voice rose.

“You approved the consulting agreements, Nathaniel. You knew the work was being done.”

He looked back at the screen.

“I approved budgets. I did not know about your ownership interest.”

Harrison interrupted calmly.

“These matters require professional examination. We are not here to determine wrongdoing today, but the trust has a responsibility to investigate potential conflicts of interest.”

Nathaniel sank into his chair.

He had spent years telling me that I knew nothing about business.

Now he was looking at documents I had quietly gathered while preparing for our daughter’s arrival.

The Call From My Doctor

I thought the most difficult part of the morning was over.

Then my phone rang.

The caller was Dr. Rebecca Salazar, the maternal-fetal medicine specialist who had been monitoring my pregnancy.

I answered immediately.

“Dr. Salazar, is everything all right with the baby?”

“Your latest results are stable, Laurel. I am calling about something else.”

Her serious tone made me sit straighter.

“Our records department received a request for copies of your medical information. The request included a consent form that appeared to carry your signature.”

I felt a sudden chill.

“I have not signed any new authorization.”

“That is why we contacted you. The signature did not match the one in our records closely enough for us to release anything.”

I glanced at Nathaniel.

“Who submitted the request?”

There was a brief pause.

“The documents came through a legal office associated with your husband’s divorce proceedings.”

I thanked her for protecting my information and asked that no records be released without direct verification.

After ending the call, I looked across the room.

“Nathaniel, did you instruct your attorneys to obtain my pregnancy records?”

He appeared genuinely confused.

“No. My attorney mentioned that medical information might become relevant to future arrangements, but I never authorized anyone to submit a consent form on your behalf.”

Brianna shifted toward the doorway.

I noticed her gripping her phone.

“Brianna,” I said, “do you know anything about this?”

“Of course not. Why would I?”

Before I could answer, her phone vibrated.

She glanced at the screen.

The color drained from her face.

The Message That Changed Everything

Brianna tried to place her phone inside her handbag, but Nathaniel stopped her.

“What is going on?”

“Nothing. It is a personal message.”

“Then why do you look so worried?”

She stepped away.

I had no intention of taking her phone or turning the morning into another argument.

But when she moved, the illuminated screen briefly faced me.

I saw only part of the message.
