Happy Soul Moral Stories

My Husband Took His Mistress’s Side Instead of Comforting Our Five-Year-Old, Blamed Our Little Girl for Ruining an Expensive Dress, Handed Me Divorce Papers, and Ordered Me to Leave Without My Child—So I Signed My Name, Picked Up My Daughter, and Quietly Told Him We’d See Each Other Again Before the Night Was Over

Part 3 of 3

The officer looked confused.

I smiled politely.

“Please let them inside.”

Spencer laughed.

“Finally. You’re thinking clearly.”

He brushed past me with Cassandra on his arm.

Neither of them noticed that several guests had quietly taken photographs of Hazel’s swollen face.

Grandpa

The ballroom doors opened.

Hundreds of guests filled the room.

A large stage stood beneath enormous crystal chandeliers.

Behind it hung a single banner.

WELCOME BACK, SAMUEL CRAWFORD

Hazel stopped walking.

She stared toward a private entrance on the far side of the ballroom.

Then she pulled away from me.

“Grandpa!”

Before anyone understood what was happening, she ran across the room.

A tall silver-haired man turned just as Hazel threw herself into his arms.

He dropped to one knee immediately.

His smile disappeared the instant he saw her face.

He gently touched her cheek.

His hand froze.

“Who did this?”

Hazel looked down.

Then quietly answered.

“Daddy watched.”

The ballroom became completely silent.

Spencer forced an awkward laugh.

“Mr. Crawford, this is all just a misunderstanding.”

He pointed toward Cassandra.

“She lost her temper for a second.”

Hazel slowly shook her head.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Daddy didn’t help me.”

Samuel stood.

The warmth disappeared from his face.

He looked directly at Spencer.

“Not one word.”

The Name I Never Used

Thomas Cardenas stepped onto the stage carrying a thin folder.

He wasn’t smiling.

Neither was I.

Samuel placed one hand gently on Hazel’s shoulder.

Thomas adjusted the microphone.

“Before tonight’s announcement, there is one misunderstanding that needs to be corrected.”

Every eye in the ballroom shifted toward me.

“Mrs. Gwen Albright is not simply the wife of Mr. Spencer Albright.”

He paused.

“She is Gwen Crawford.”

The room erupted into whispers.

Thomas continued.

“Only daughter of Samuel Crawford.”

Spencer’s face turned white.

Cassandra blinked twice.

Thomas never raised his voice.

“Six years ago, Miss Crawford voluntarily stopped using her family name after her marriage.”

“She also personally guaranteed three emergency loans that prevented Albright Enterprises from entering bankruptcy.”

A large screen behind him lit up.

Loan documents.

Guarantee agreements.

One signature.

Mine.

Thomas pointed toward the screen.

“Those guarantees were withdrawn this afternoon.”

Another document appeared.

The deed to the Bel Air estate.

“The residence currently occupied by Mr. Albright is owned by the Crawford Family Trust.”

Spencer stared at the screen.

His lips moved.

No words came out.

Nothing Was Ever His

Spencer finally stumbled toward me.

For the first time since I’d known him, he looked frightened.

“Gwen… please…”

“We can fix this.”

“Let’s go home.”

I looked at him for a long moment.

Then I asked the only question that mattered.

“When Hazel lost her teeth today…”

“…did you ask if she was alright?”

He opened his mouth.

Closed it.

Tried again.

Nothing.

I nodded once.

“That’s why there isn’t a home to go back to.”

Thomas quietly handed another folder to federal investigators waiting near the stage.

They approached Spencer.

One agent spoke calmly.

“Mr. Albright, we’d like to discuss several financial transactions involving employee retirement funds.”

Spencer turned toward Cassandra.

Almost desperately.

“Tell them!”

“Explain what happened!”

But she had already stepped backward.

An investigator stopped her.

“Roxana Perez?”

She froze.

The agent continued.

“You’re under arrest for identity fraud, forged financial documents, and assaulting a minor.”

The color drained from her face.

Within seconds both were being escorted across the ballroom.

No one applauded.

No one defended them.

They simply watched.

The Only Thing Hazel Needed

A pediatric dentist examined Hazel in one of the hotel’s private medical suites.

He smiled gently afterward.

“She’ll need dental treatment, but she’s going to be alright.”

Hazel climbed onto Samuel’s lap.

He reached into his pocket and placed a small silver necklace shaped like a star into her hand.

“Your mom wore this when she was your age.”

Hazel looked at me.

“Can I keep it?”

I smiled.

“It’s yours now.”

She fastened it carefully around her neck.

On the drive away from the hotel, she accidentally tipped over a paper cup of hot chocolate across the back seat.

Her eyes immediately filled with panic.

She whispered,

“I’m sorry.”

I grabbed a handful of napkins and wiped up the spill.

Then I reached over and squeezed her little hand.

“Sweetheart, hot chocolate is easy to clean.”

I brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

“People should never make you believe that you aren’t.”
