Part 1 of 3

Two Tiny Teeth on a Marble Floor

The first thing I noticed wasn’t the sound.

It was two tiny baby teeth resting on the white marble floor beside Cassandra’s designer heel.

Hazel covered her mouth with both hands.

Her eyes filled with tears.

For a second, nobody moved.

Then Cassandra looked down at her silk dress, where a splash of pink juice had stained the fabric.

“Do you know how much this dress cost?” she said sharply.

Hazel was only five.

She had tripped while carrying a glass because she wanted to help me set the table.

She didn’t even have a chance to explain.

Cassandra shoved her aside in frustration.

Hazel lost her balance and stumbled into the hallway table.

I was already moving before she started crying.

I wrapped my arms around her.

One side of her face was quickly turning red, and she kept holding her mouth as tears rolled down her cheeks.

She whispered over and over that she was sorry.

She didn’t even realize two of her baby teeth were lying on the floor.

Spencer stood only a few feet away.

He had seen everything.

I looked at him.

I waited.

He adjusted the cuff of his jacket before speaking.

“Gwen, you should’ve taught her to be more careful.”

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood him.

“She just scared our daughter half to death.”

He let out a quiet sigh, as though I were interrupting dinner.

“Hazel ruined a custom dress.”

Hazel buried her face against my shoulder.

“Mommy… my mouth hurts.”

I carried her into the kitchen, wrapped an ice pack in a towel, and gently held it against her cheek.

She flinched but stayed perfectly still.

She never complained.

That silence frightened me far more than anything else I had seen that afternoon.

Six Years of Staying Quiet

When I married Spencer Albright six years earlier, I believed patience could solve almost anything.

Whenever he controlled our bank accounts…

Whenever he reminded me I hadn’t earned a paycheck since Hazel was born…

Whenever his mother Patricia called me useless…

I convinced myself peace inside the house mattered more than winning arguments.

The house itself became another reminder.

Every room reflected Spencer’s success.

Magazine photographs.

Award plaques.

Expensive artwork.

None of it belonged to me.

At least that was what everyone believed.

Cassandra had started appearing almost a year earlier.

At first Spencer called her a consultant.

Then she began joining family dinners.

Eventually she walked through our front door without knocking.

She used my coffee mugs.

She sat in my favorite chair.

One afternoon she even asked our housekeeper to move my family photographs into a storage room because they didn’t match the living room.

Spencer never objected.

Neither did Patricia.

His mother simply smiled.

“You should appreciate that Cassandra has better taste.”

I kept telling myself Hazel needed two parents.

I kept swallowing every insult.

Until today.

Patricia Crossed One Line Too Many

Patricia arrived almost twenty minutes after Cassandra slapped Hazel.

She stepped inside carrying shopping bags from Rodeo Drive.

Her eyes landed on the small drops of blood someone hadn’t finished cleaning.

She frowned.

“Why is this still here?”

Not…

Is Hazel alright?

Not…

What happened?

Only the marble floor.

The housekeeper quietly explained that Hazel had been injured.

Patricia shook her head.

“Children make everything messy.”

Hazel clung tighter to my hand.

Her lip had nearly stopped bleeding.

The swelling hadn’t.

Patricia finally looked directly at her granddaughter.

“Honestly, Gwen, you should’ve taught her better manners.”

Something inside me became strangely calm.

Not angry.

Not emotional.

Just…

Finished.

I stood.

“Hazel, sweetheart, would you wait by the stairs for one minute?”

She nodded.

I watched until she was safely out of the room.

Patricia stepped closer.

“Now listen carefully—”

Her hand came up.

Maybe she intended to point at me.

Maybe she intended to slap me.

I’ll never know.

Because I caught her wrist before she reached me.

The room became completely silent.

Patricia stared at me as though I’d committed a crime.

“Let go of me.”

“Don’t touch me again.”

Her face turned bright red.

“How dare you—”

Spencer crossed the room.

“Gwen, you’re out of control.”

I looked at my husband.

Really looked at him.

The expensive watch.

The tailored suit.

The confidence that came from believing nothing could ever be taken away.

Then I spoke quietly.

“If you put your hands on me today…”

He laughed.

“…by tomorrow morning, Albright Enterprises won’t have a single line of credit left.”

For a second nobody reacted.

Then Cassandra laughed first.

A loud, dramatic laugh.

Patricia joined her.

Even Spencer smiled.

“You?” he asked.

“With what money?”

“You don’t work.”

“You don’t own anything.”

“You don’t even have family willing to help you.”

I simply nodded.

Because every word he believed was exactly why I’d kept my secret for six years.

One Phone Call

After everyone finally wandered back toward the dining room, I carried Hazel upstairs.
